dx87··on WallStreetBets vs WallStreet: It's not about the money anymore
Is that any different to taking a day off work to go to a protest? Both situations have you losing money in order to bring issues to light. Same with union workers going on strike.
dx87··on Discord bans r/WallStreetBets server, subreddit went private for a while
My history class must have skipped over the part where the american revolution was organized on twitter and facebook.
dx87··on U.S. Suffers Sharpest Rise in Poverty Rate in More Than 50 Years
At least where I live in Maryland, being on "welfare" includes a cheap smart phone because a lot of jobs assume you have one for things like driving directions, getting signatures, taking pictures of receipts, etc.
dx87··on East Coast Internet Outage
Are you using different DNS servers? My work laptop was using 8.8.8.8 and is getting name resolution errors, but my personal computer is using 1.1.1.1 and working fine.
dx87··on East Coast Internet Outage
Yep, on verizon fios just outside baltimore. Can't ping 8.8.8.8, but can ping 1.1.1.1 fine. Also having issues connecting to services running in AWS.
dx87··on I’ve tracked every piece of clothing I’ve worn for three years
I think he's the outlier. Most people I know own 2 belts; one for casual clothes, one for dress pants. Shoes is normally casual shoes, work boots/dress shoes, hiking boots/running shoes, plus flip-flops or slippers. I think I've only met one man who had that many shoes, and he was really into fashion and collecting sneakers, so he had probably 50 different pairs to make sure he always had some that matched his outfit.
dx87··on I’ve tracked every piece of clothing I’ve worn for three years
One way to make your clothes last longer is by checking to see how often you're supposed to wash them, and air drying them if possible. Things like jeans really only need to be washed a couple of times a year unless you're spilling stuff on them or being very active and sweaty in them. Growing up, the conventional wisdom was that you always had to wash something after it was worn once, and you were being a slob if you didn't (for some reasons hoodies were exempt), but it turns out that isn't true.
dx87··on Twitter sued for allegedly refusing to remove child porn
They could just remove it if they can't tell, same way a bouncer will throw you out of a bar if you don't have ID.

I don't know why people are giving social media companies a pass on what goes on just because their job is hard. Nobody is holding a gun to their head and telling them that they need to run an unmanageable platform, they wanted this many users.

dx87··on Twitter suspends the account of Venezuela's new National Assembly
Depends on if it was actually toxic, or just full of people who want it to be toxic so they have something to fight against. I recently read a book by Alan Watts, and he said that one thing that liberal and conservative morality police have in common is that they don't actually want things to improve things, it's just the justification they use to try and control people. If either group were to "win", they'd just find some other cause to be upset about.

dx87··on 2020 Saw Unprecedented Murder Spike in Major U.S. Cities
The politicians talking about firearm violence don't actually care about fixing it, they just say things that their base wants to hear. For example, the democrat congressman from my district in MD sent out an email talking about trying to fight the epidemic of gun violence by banning assault rifles and high capacity magazines, even though pistols are used in the vast majority of shootings. A few years ago the MD state democrats also blocked some laws that would have imposed harsher punishment on people who use handguns in crimes because they said it would disproportionately affect minorities. They didn't want to look like they weren't doing anything about gun violence though, so they banned bump stocks, even though they have never been used to commit a crime in MD, and the ATF says the functionality can easily be replicated with a rubber band or belt.
dx87··on IPFS Support in Brave
It means that Brave is implementing protocols that help circumvent censorship, while the CEO of Mozilla is saying that current censorship doesn't go far enough.
dx87··on Gaming the system: How GameStop stock surged
People look at me like I'm crazy when I tell them 59.99 for a game is a bargain compared to the amount of value you get with modern titles. I remember buying Nintendo and Sega games for the same price. Magazines only covered the biggest games, so the most informed you could be as a consumer is based on how cool the box art was, and most could be finished in an afternoon once you figured out the cheap mechanics designed to force you to start over.
dx87··on Gaming the system: How GameStop stock surged
Yep, they were pretty short, and a lot of them had no save feature so had to be finished in one sitting (unless your parents let you leave it running and just unhook the coax cable so they could watch TV). I remember going to a local game store that would let you try out used games in the store to verify that they worked, and I actually beat a game at the store.
dx87··on Capitol Attack Was Months in the Making on Facebook
"Oh well, at least you tried" sounds like the definition of FB getting a free pass.
dx87··on Order on Protecting Americans from Overcriminalization Through Regulatory Reform
A better solution is probably simplifying and reducing the number of laws, not making the government prove that you knew what you did was against the law.
dx87··on Tim Cook Defends Parler App Suspension: ‘We Don’t Consider That Free Speech’
It is, but that's not the point. Blizzard isn't trying to redefine free speech, Apple is.
dx87··on Tim Cook Defends Parler App Suspension: ‘We Don’t Consider That Free Speech’
Nothing you said is relevant to what they're talking about. This is about Apple trying to redefine commonly used words to avoid any discussions about limiting free speech. It's like when Verizon claimed that "Unlimited" is just a marketing term, and doesn't actually mean no limit.
dx87··on The Cabal: Valve’s Design Process for Creating Half-Life (1999)
I'd much rather the protagonist be silent in an FPS. It ruins the immersion for me, unless there are dialogue choices so I still have some agency. I quit playing Dishonored 2 after a couple of hours because the protagonist keeps talking as a way to narrate things for the player, but it's just silly being a stealth assassin constantly talking to yourself.
dx87··on Quixotic Californian crusade to officially recognize the hellabyte
I've only heard one person say it, and it was the only native Californian I've ever worked with.
dx87··on An Engineering Argument for Basic Income
As an anecdote, my wife used to work in the front office of a low income apartment complex, and she said it was common for tenants to purposefully stay on welfare/unemployment, while getting paid under the table for stuff like landscaping and handyman work. Getting a normal job would have effectively been a pay cut for them.
dx87··on Facebook Incubated the Insurrection
"If nobody knows how to do it safely, then it's fine to cause harm" is a strange way to look at the world. Maybe Facebook should be treated like other companies that sell products that are proven to be dangerous, and they can't operate until they prove it can be done safely.
dx87··on Fitbit is now officially part of Google
Unless there's a guarantee that breaking the user agreement results in a fine that exceeds the money they got by breaking the agreement, the user agreement is mostly worthless.
dx87··on Fitbit is now officially part of Google
My wife switched over to a Garmin fitness tracker. She'd been having technical issues with her old Fitbit anyway, but the Google acquisition made it so she didn't even consider a new Fitbit as a replacement.
dx87··on Ask HN: Does your employer want you to state pronouns in email signature?
No. I'm on th East coast in a solidly liberal area, and the only time I've ever seen pronouns listed outside of twitter was the staff name tags at a college graduation.
dx87··on Facebook to staff: Avoid company-branded clothing for own safety
What dictionary are you using that says censoring can only be done by a government? It seems like a tech employee talking point so they can pretend they aren't censoring people.
dx87··on CD Projekt Red is under investigation
I only ran into one bug that prevented quest completion. Near the beginning of the game, there is a quest where you and Jackie have to pick up some equipment then fight your way out of the building. On my first attempt, Jackie got stuck in combat because he didn't recognize a dead as enemy as being dead, so he wouldn't leave the building for me to talk to him and finish the quest.
dx87··on 70TB of Parler users’ messages, videos, and posts leaked by security researchers
In the initial post about the Capitol being shut down,t here were people saying that everyone who broke into the capitol building needed to be tried for treason and executed, or saying that the police should have opened fire and killed anyone who broke in. The mods removed the comments, but HN isn't some paragon of virtue that isn't susceptible to the same calls for violence as any other site.
dx87··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
I've had mostly the same experience with youtube. I wanted to get into woodworking during COVID lockdowns, so I was watching a lot of popular woodworking channels that had nothing to do with politics, and was frequently shown Trump ads. Then once I realised how expensive woodworking would be, I started watching videos about game development. After ~1 week, all the Trump ads disappeared, and I started getting Biden ads.
dx87··on CVE Stuffing
It just causes extra annoyance at work. There have been a few times when some named vulnerability gets covered by a generic tech website, and the next day at work my inbox has 2-3 meeting invites from non-technical project managers to discuss what needs to be done to mitigate the vulnerability, regardless of its severity, and without even knowing if our organization is vulnerable to it.
