duncancarroll··on The science of having ideas in the shower
If you think your shower ideas are good, you should try meditation!
duncancarroll··on FTX tapped into customer accounts to fund risky bets, setting up its downfall
> "every cryptocurrency system is a fraud at its heart."

I'm not sure I agree with you on that part.

Fraud is defined as "wrongful or criminal deception intended to result in financial or personal gain." Encryption-based currency by itself does not meet that definition.

Can people use crypto to commit fraud? Yes, just the same as they could use fiat or anything else that has perceived value.

imho the main value of crypto as a technology is that it is A) decentralized, and B) removes many intermediaries & inefficiencies involved in handling + distributing money. </$0.02>

duncancarroll··on The incidence of myocarditis and pericarditis in unvaccinated Covid patients
I'm sorry.

I got Omicron in January '22 despite being double vaxx'd, and I felt totally fine until 3-4 mo. later when I started to get recurrent dizzy spells, major fatigue, and bouts of anxiety, which are all very unusual for me. Checkup / bloodwork showed nothing. I am 41 y.o. who exercise regularly, does not smoke, rarely drinks, etc.

So far I can still function and maintain a job, but it makes me wonder what's going on inside of me that 11 months later it's still causing these issues regularly. Our 4 y.o. son got it as well and although he was asymptomatic I am still very concerned about what the long-term effects on him may be.

I am not a doctor and this is not medical advice, but I read a paper saying that hyperbaric oxygen therapy helped some people, so I've been using Wim Hoff breathing as a poor man's version. It does seems to help with the fatigue but not the vertigo. Best of luck.

Wow these are great, thank you
duncancarroll··on Launch HN: Iollo (YC S22) – At-home metabolomics test to extend healthy lifespan
This looks awesome! I recently did a 2x/mo metabolomics experiment (https://smm-data.herokuapp.com/) and I've been wishing someone would do something like this ever since.

Best of luck!

duncancarroll··on Weedkiller ingredient tied to cancer found in 80% of US urine samples
This is a valid point; just because something is naturally-derived, doesn't make it safe. For example, permethrin is approved for organic use but it's also a neurotoxin: https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC5598406/

Obviously the dosages are low in foods treated with it, but you're still ingesting a neurotoxin, yet the food can be legally labelled organic.

My solution is to list the pesticides on the packaging like they do the nutritional content.

duncancarroll··on Ask HN: What game do you wish existed?
I want a VR game where you're a bumblebee who's goal is to collect pollen in a yard. Your opponent is a spider who's goal is to catch you. They get to set up webs around the flowers before you spawn in, and maybe they can also shoot sticky webs at you to trap you.

Whenever you are trapped by the spider you get to enjoy the fully-immersive experience only VR can deliver of being eaten alive by a spider! Fun for the whole family!!

duncancarroll··on Ask HN: Any scientifically proven techniques to boost concentration?
Meditation works well for me.

I have a cushion next to my desk and whenever I can't focus or don't know what to do next, I sit for ~5-10 min with eyes closed and usually the next best task becomes apparent. I then visualize it clearly and think about the sequence of steps needed to accomplish it.

If I don't do that, I usually find myself wasting extra time before I arrive at the next task, or I feel more low-energy / unfocused that I would have otherwise.

Regular exercise pairs well with this to keep your baseline energy up.

duncancarroll··on Mozilla Founder Slams Mozilla Foundation for Adopting Cryptocurrency Payments
It just seems arbitrary. I'd prefer we get rid of cows (14.5% global CO2) before we get rid of bitcoin. At least blockchains don't feel pain...
duncancarroll··on Mozilla Founder Slams Mozilla Foundation for Adopting Cryptocurrency Payments
Right, I guess what I'm asking is, is that necessary? i.e. is proof of work accelerating the climate change timetable such that it's more of an existential threat than it already is? Otherwise it feels like just one guilty party among many. I don't know the data so I'm genuinely asking.

Even so, if the root problem is clean energy, banning crypto is only going to help until the next energy-burning tech comes along. i.e. we'd just be kicking the can and destroying digital currency in the process.

duncancarroll··on Mozilla Founder Slams Mozilla Foundation for Adopting Cryptocurrency Payments
I'm not trying to incite a flame war, but is crypto really that bad for the planet? Ethereum is moving to Proof of Stake & it's not all ponzi schemes I don't think.

I'm genuinely trying to understand if he's coming from a place of knowledge or if it's more part of the trend to have highly polarized opinions about everything.

duncancarroll··on Superintelligence Cannot Be Contained: Lessons from Computability Theory
I still have yet to see a plausible, step-by-step example of how this hypothetical AI manages to grab the levers of real-world machinery, factories, industries, raw material excavation, etc, and causes mayhem.
duncancarroll··on Explore the most detailed map of the universe – EPFL Longread
This looks amazing but I can't seem to find any information about whether it's compatible with standard VR headsets (Oculus / Vive / etc)
duncancarroll··on Vega Strike
I'm not sure what your standards are for indie games but this looks pretty great to me.
duncancarroll··on Raspberry Pi for Kill Mosquitoes by Laser
Very cool. Would love to see results with a night vision camera.
duncancarroll··on Talking, Typing, Thinking: Software Is Not a Desk Job
Meditation breaks work well for the "Thinking" part of this too. Works by the same principle as why you have aha moments in the shower or while washing dishes, i.e. no distractions and the focused activity diminishes random thoughts.
duncancarroll··on Basic Concepts in Unity for Software Engineers
This is great! I've been looking for something like this everywhere; thank you for writing it and I look forward to reading the next installments.
duncancarroll··on Flight Simulator 2020 – New Development Footage
Wow, that's pretty cool. Does P3D have native support for VR or are you hacking it in somehow?

duncancarroll··on Medallion Fund “Stretches Explanation to the Limit,” Professor Claims
I can understand that there are a limited number of people who can understand and apply the math necessary, but not that it could remain proprietary for 30 years.

Usually if a company has secret sauce, someone will leave and spin off on their own. Even Google can't retain everyone. So unless I'm missing something, any explanation has to account for why this hasn't occurred here.

duncancarroll··on Master of Orion
There is a really well-done, faithful-to-the-original but still slightly expanded-upon open source Java clone of MOO1 called Remnants of the Precursors: https://www.reddit.com/r/rotp/comments/eew3hs/guide_to_the_r...

It compiles in IntelliJ and is very fun to play and mod.

duncancarroll··on Show HN: Lucidity – an interactive program-state visualizer
Very cool! Looks very promising and something I'd use often if it were connected to IntelliJ. I'd been toying around with a similar idea of doing a similar "visual debugger" but within VR (not that it needs to be, but 3D is fun. I've never found time to execute on it however.
duncancarroll··on Satellite Photos Reveal Extent of Damage from Iranian Strike on Air Base in Iraq

duncancarroll··on Electrical Ground Current Event Detected in Norway
Am I understanding the article correctly? They're guessing that because there was no solar wind which would normally trigger aurora, the Earth must have passed through a sort of rogue wave in the heliosphere, which also was strong enough to induce a current in the ground?
duncancarroll··on Half-Life: Alyx
Why is this being downvoted? Has no one in this thread played Echo VR?
duncancarroll··on Half-Life: Alyx
Humor me for a moment and just load up Echo VR and stand in the main menu looking at your arms.

Where in that scenario would you say you are confused about the position of your elbow?

duncancarroll··on Half-Life: Alyx
Whatever they're doing is pretty accurate. I've never noticed any issues.
duncancarroll··on Half-Life: Alyx
I don't know what all these posters are talking about, VR simulates your elbow + arm position 100% with normal IK.

If you don't believe me just load up Echo VR and look at your arms. Valve probably just doesn't want them blocking your view.

duncancarroll··on Half-Life: Alyx
It's probably just that they would get in the way. IK works brilliantly in VR for arm simulation, see: Echo VR.
duncancarroll··on Half-Life: Alyx
Try Echo VR.
