dukeyukey··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
I have a bottle of Niagara icewine downstairs I'm very much looking forward to!
dukeyukey··on America.gov
That's just not true, a flow on gov.uk can involve a lot of pages but they are exceedingly clear and easy to navigate.
dukeyukey··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
Surely this just means Justworks is your HR team?
dukeyukey··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
My local Morrisons has a few decent 3.4% ales for £1-£1.25, I am a loyal customer.
dukeyukey··on California farmers are struggling to sell grapes as demand for wine drops
My local supermarket sells 3.4% ales for £1 each, it's fantastic.
dukeyukey··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
The damage from WW2 to Europe was not limited to bombing and killing, it includes the economic harm inflicted on Eastern Europe in the decades afterwards by the Soviets.
dukeyukey··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
Europe does build ships, even if East Asia dominates. But the US is abnormally low, like it build less tonnage than Finland.

Not everyone can operate civilian ship fleets, managing a global shipping operation is not a "pick up and do it", it requires some build up.

> What a weird one to pick. Do you think the US doesn't have massive ports like Europe?

The US has ports. But they don't build civilian ships, and they don't really own ships either. The vast majority of American ocean-going shipping is floated on ships owned by Europeans and built by East Asians

dukeyukey··on ASML says it sold 'absolutely nothing' in Europe in 2026
The rebuilding phase only really got started in the 90s! Integrating the post-communist states was a huge effort that is still arguably going on.

This is expected though, right? Even in Europe, unless you're a verysmall country, most business you deal with is domestic. Do by default, the largest companies mare going to be in the largest economies. Doesn't mean you can't get lucky every now and again, but you are handicapped by not having a large domestic consumption base protected via political independence.

China and the US are continent-scale megastates. Obviously a mid-sized Atlantic island like the UK, or smallish peninsula like Italy, are not going to compete on scale.

dukeyukey··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
I work for a UK fintech that is bank-adjacent, the backend for the apps and the website are the same.
dukeyukey··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
I imagine that if all banking apps go down as a result of war then bank websites, credit cards, basically any other digital financial thing will also be down.
dukeyukey··on UK military jamming other nations' satellites to defend itself, BBC told
If banking went down we'd have a hell of a time. It's not like I keep 6 months rent in cash on me.
dukeyukey··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
To be fair South Australia is:

* Incredibly sunny

* Incredibly sparely populated

* Functionally winterless

Like it's the perfect setup for solar.

Somewhere like Denmark, Japan, even the US Northeast does not have those.

dukeyukey··on Italian parliament votes for return to nuclear energy
Nuclear fuel is available from lots of countries, including Canada and Australia, plus deposits in Europe that aren't being minted because uranium is very cheap.

Plus you can stockpile it super easy.

dukeyukey··on Frontier AI on Your Own Hardware
I can't speak for the graduate or American market, but I can tell you the market for reasonably experienced software people in London is hot. Loads of hiring and salaries are going up.
dukeyukey··on What will our economic future look like?
Being able to fly at all is a much better passenger experience than not having that choice in the first place. And I'll bet that flying first class today is far better than 50 years ago.
dukeyukey··on Dutch central bank moves share of gold from U.S., Canada to London
Would you put it past Trump to use gold stores as a threat?
dukeyukey··on Google: Lake Ontario/Lake America name change in the U.S. will appear in Maps
What makes you think that? It says Lake Ontario here in the UK.
dukeyukey··on U.S. State Department pauses immigrant visa applications
The US has the lowest percentage of it's population being immigrants in the Western Anglosphere. Like it's beaten by all of Australia, Canada, New Zealand, the UK, and Ireland. Germany and France too, plus a while host of smaller European countries.

There's an argument that the US is the least immigrant friendly large Western nation. Maybe the medium sized ones too.

dukeyukey··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
AI companies are doing this at a far lesser scale than libraries are, are you implying doing it less is worse?
dukeyukey··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
If someone was ok with Nazis killing Jews but not Soviets, I am going to think they don't believe it's the killing that is the problem.
dukeyukey··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Rare and valuable books are not going to be in the giant pallets AI companies are buying. Most public libraries do not have professional archivists or anything like that, not so charity shops, or booksellers.
dukeyukey··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
I imagine they know the public would react like the public is reacting. Like obviously this is not worse than what libraries and thrift shops do daily, but it is bad optics.
dukeyukey··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
Can you explain why AI companies destroying these is worse than a library or bookseller destroying these?
dukeyukey··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
It's more that, we don't need to preserve a million copies of the same mundane book. Losing a few copies to AI training is fine.
dukeyukey··on AI companies destroy physical books – let's scan rare books before it's too late
If it were legal they may well do that as a public branding exercise. Google already tried and got punished for it!
dukeyukey··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
Europe is a big place. Domestic air con is ubiquitous in Italy, rare in the UK. But even in the UK, places like shops and offices will usually have air con.
dukeyukey··on Super El Niño Keeps Growing as New Forecasts Reach Record Territory Ahead Winter
I mean do we not want food to be stored for tough times? And the people who do this storing should get paid for it?
