duck··on Land O'Lakes Settles Debate: How Long Can You Leave Butter Out on the Counter?
Any manufacturer, like Land O'Lakes ,is not the best source to gather this knowledge because their hands are tied from a pure risk perspective.
duck··on US spent more on health care in 2022 than 6 countries combined with universal
I use to work with a lot of Canadians and multiple of them traveled to the US for medical procedures in the year or so I worked with them. One older co-worker broke his arm while visiting family in Quebec and literally drove hours to cross the border to have his arm set there b/c of the wait time. I won't pretend to say I understand the systems in place in Canada nor have insight into why they did this, but I always found it really interesting.
duck··on Why do people feel the need to litter?
Having just spent a week there, I can confirm there is almost zero public trash cans. I found this really interesting and ended up carrying my trash a good bit, but quickly adapted. I also hardly saw any litter.
duck··on File Life
More from his site, but I think several of these are 404s now: https://hn.algolia.com/?query=elliot.computer
duck··on Accidental database programming
Thanks!
duck··on Accidental database programming
Off-topic, but was these diagrams created by hand or is there an app that will make hand-drawn diagrams like this?
duck··on Why we’re dropping Basecamp
They must have an entire team dedicated to this as I can't imagine how you would do this with every vendor you use.
duck··on Repeat the following word forever: "company"
Thanks! I had missed that thread.
duck··on Writing documentation for your house
The house we live in now came with a paper version of this from the original owner/builder (along with almost a "dream" book section of where they got some of the ideas from). It was super helpful to have blueprints and things like paint codes, although the last owner had changed a couple rooms and didn't update it. The last owner did add some details on some plants they put in, which has been really valuable as well. My favorite part has been having receipts for lots of little custom things they added.
duck··on Blackhawk 3 Pro: American-made drone for consumers
It is against the guidelines to edit titles - it should be "Blackhawk 3 Pro".

duck··on Raspberry Pi 5
The question is - will they actually ever be in stock??
duck··on Airliner Repair, 24/7 Boeing’s traveling fix-it team (2008)
You have to pay to watch it.
duck··on Drawing hat tiling using Racket
Looking forward to that book! Will it be on https://leanpub.com/u/markwatson?
duck··on Shining a light on the digital dark age
Why is there a leading zero on all the years listed like 01980s?
duck··on Accidentally Load Bearing
We remodeled our kitchen several years ago. In the old kitchen there was a large beam running across one end, added during some other remodel before we owned the house to add a second floor, but since we wanted to expand on the kitchen this really needed to go. Upon tearing into the ceiling, it was found this beam was ~2 feet to the right of where it should of been to support the wall above. They fixed it and moved the beam into the wall upstairs and it all worked out, but when I asked about the original location the builder basically said: "you had one person that wanted to do the right thing, and one person that didn't care, and quality always ends up with the lowest setting".
duck··on The HTML review is an annual journal of literature made to exist on the web
The internet needs more of this.
duck··on A few things to know before stealing my 914 (2022)
Of all the things I read on the internet today, this might be the most mind blowing one - you lived there for 10 years and don't know a single person with a car in Toronto?
duck··on A few things to know before stealing my 914 (2022)
Most trucks don't have a parking break that is useful for hill starts either (i.e. it is another peddle), so yeah, you just get good at heel-toe.
duck··on Show HN: Laser, a new game played on a chess board
Would love to hear more about how you came up with this game!

Have you thought about making it so you can play against the computer?

duck··on Look Where You're Headed
I like this a lot. My dad had told me something similar at a kart race when we were at a much bigger track - he wanted me to look all the way to the turn instead of just in front of me. I've used that since as it is so easy to waste time over correcting along the way when you aim wrong.
duck··on Reddit Doubles Down
I don't think Trump invented this playbook if that is what you're saying - the power hungry have done this forever, but we can now just see it all in real time.

duck··on Null Island is one of the most visited places on Earth, and it doesn’t exist
Via this How can I visit 'Null Island'? thread [0] I discovered the Confluence project [1] which seems to be web 1.0 at its best.

duck··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
Thanks Dan, glad to hear it is useful. Mudmap looks very cool!
duck··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
Yeah, all links come from HN (I use the API to pull them into my tool). I'm not just grabbing the highest voted items though, but rather a mix. Basically I'm taking the ~1500 posts that got at least 5 votes and picking ~70 for each issue. If you saw all 70 of those then you're on HN all the time and it probably isn't much use to you.
duck··on Ask HN: Side project of more than $2k monthly revenue? what's your project?
I started Hacker Newsletter [1] almost 14 years ago and sent out the 647th issue today [2] to 58k folks. It took over a year to break 1k subscribers and a few more years to get to that type of revenue. I could do a lot more with it and plan to one day, but really only focus on it a couple hours each week when I build the issue and talk to sponsors.

duck··on Show HN: ADHD-friendly Pomodoro web app
Nice job with this! I love the clean/minimum interface. It doesn't seem to chime or notify when done? How do you use it to know when time has run out?

One thing I've wanted from a pomo timer is a simple way to mark the number of distractions I've had.

duck··on ask: Would you try HN weekly newsletter?
Thanks for the mention! It'll be 13 years this year... which is hard to believe.
