dual_dingo··on Show HN: Tracking my local bus with a RaspberryPi
I haven't closely monitored the situation for years now, but it used to be the case that OS/software support for anything than a Raspi was often spotty at best.

With a Raspi, you not only have Raspian/RPiOS that fully supports all models back to the first one from 2011, but a decent number of really good alternatives like Fedora, Ubuntu and special appliance variants, e.g. for console emulation etc.

In contrast, my last experiments with some other SBCs consisted of downloading some ancient ISO files of questionable provenance from some shady .cn domains. It might have gotten better, but one should carefully investigate the software situation before buying a non-RPi SBC.

dual_dingo··on Figma Alternatives
Adobe has a long, well documented history of screwing their users, e.g. with their switch to this stupid Creative Cloud bullshit.

It's just natural and common sense to look for alternatives if you rely on Figma and don't trust them to be a viable product in the hands of Adobe.

I kind of understand it for restaurant menus. Both "real" restaurant and takeway places need to print actual menus and/or flyers, and it's just easier to create a PDF document and upload it to your website than it is to reformat the document to be useful as web page in many cases if you are not well versed in this. Since PDF readers in browsers got decent, this isn't too much of an issue anymore anyway, IMHO.
dual_dingo··on Old school Linux administration – my next homelab generation
I've done that in the past. It was fun and nostalgic. Then I had to upgrade the OS to a newer version and things were not fun anymore. At all. And I remembered why VMs and containers are so extremely useful.
dual_dingo··on Tell HN: Google Cloud suspended our production projects at 1am on Saturday
I see this for actual service providers that have full control over their business, but if you have resellers of similar size as your own org, don't you end up with the problem that they are about as important for the big provider as you are and you are as screwed as before when things go wrong?
dual_dingo··on Miami advances plan to move homeless onto island
If you really think this, you have absolutely no idea what you are talking about.

Homelessness is a problem caused by society, not really a problem to society, but homeless people are a GREAT scapegoat for asshole politicians and people like you are more than willing to jump on that bandwagon. Disgusting.

No, this message is as american as it gets. What they are really saying is "We are not allowed to profile and sell the data of european visitors like we do with americans because of the GDPR, so they are not relevant to us". This relentless commercialization and lack of privacy is not exactly new.

IANAL, not a US citizen and I have no intention to dig into how the US defines money laundering.

That said, when I hear "money laundering", I exclusively interpret this as the act of whitewashing money aquired by illegal means (e.g. drug sales, extortion, fencing stolen goods etc.) in order to make it appear legitimate. In that regard, there is nothing that is not bad about money laundering (IMHO).

Of course you could argue that it should be possible to hide the source of your money or even the money itself from the government, but as a consequence, you would have to accept that at the very least, your country would have no longer any means to fight crime.

dual_dingo··on Linux 5.19
I don't think SemVer is an appropriate versioning scheme for the Linux kernel due to the extremely large number of subsystems that make up the whole.
dual_dingo··on Haribo Goldbears, the world’s first gummy bears
According to german Wikipedia, this still happens but has moved from Bonn to Grafschaft. https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Haribo#Verschiedenes
dual_dingo··on 8088 PC XT Compatible Logic Board
The fact that all this is running on a ESP32 that costs ~10€ is mind boggling.
dual_dingo··on USB Cheat Sheet
I guess at some point optical will be the only way forward.

Having more data lines in a serial bus is interesting, as the whole reasoning to go from parallel lines (e.g. Centronics, ATA/SCSI or ISA/PCI buses) to serial (SATA/SAS, PCIe, USB) was that coordinating multiple data lines got impossible due to physical limitations where e.g. minimal differences in cable lengths started to matter).

dual_dingo··on Self-calibrating USB Paper Tape Reader
I guess that the mechanical part would be achievable by hobbyists, but that the signal aquitistion and processing for modern high capacity LTO drives is nearly as complex as with modern hard drives, which borders on magic :)
dual_dingo··on Modern Turbo Vision 2.0
IIRC both Windows and TV where modeled after the IBM Common User Access (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/IBM_Common_User_Access) interface style, which was a somewhat big theme in the late 80s and early 90s.

Genius GM6000? I had that one and still use the cutting side of the combined mousepad/cutting mat that came with it.

dual_dingo··on macOS Monterey
I absolute agree with you, it's an absolute disgrace and while I am all in on holding Apple, MS or Google responsible for their shit, any law in that regard would most likely only affect the livelihood of your friendly neighborhood OS developer, but not actually Apple & Co.
dual_dingo··on macOS Monterey
I am not very experienced with Arch, but my impression is that it is actually more reliable when updating/upgrading then going to a new major MacOS release, which is an absolute disagrace given the fact that Apple can actually test their stuff on every single hardware model it is supposed to run.

And no, my experience on general user behaviour is to expect no backup, but this isn't Auntie Ednas crocheting Facebook group, but Hacker News :)

dual_dingo··on macOS Monterey
> I just upgraded to Monterey > I started to panic and figure out how I was going to back everything up.

Upgrading to a new OS on release day without a prior backup. You like to live dangerously, do you?

dual_dingo··on Bring back menus, QR codes are terrible
Of course this is not useful or really human readable. It was meant as a "Be careful what you ask for" to the parent post and refers to the fact that at least in my part of the world, most restaurants are not part of a big chain and often end up with digital service/ad agencies of very dubious quality where this kind of URL would be completely acceptable both for the business owner and the agency because both just don't know any better.
dual_dingo··on Bring back menus, QR codes are terrible
> And if you really insist on a silly QR menu, then at least include a human readable version of the URL. Seriously. It's not that hard.

OK, here is the URL: > http://customer0931.incompetentagency.com/?location=2k12kx&i...

Have fun :)

dual_dingo··on Behind the design of the fresh new Firefox coming June 1
Ah yes, we have no money so let's invest a ton of work into something that will do nothing to bring in new or lost users, but, given our track record, has the potential to alienate even more of our ever fewer remaining users.
dual_dingo··on Dorodango: the Japanese art of making shiny mud balls (2019)

dual_dingo··on I Love MDN, or the cult of the free in action
Many employers pay for reference materials like this. Universities and hospitals pay insane amounts of money to Elsevier, Springer Nature & Co for scientific journals, others to orgs like ANSI, ISO or DIN. All this stuff is so expensive that no one can be expected to pay it out of his own pocket.
dual_dingo··on Add '127.0.0.1 xn–9q8h' to /etc/hosts gives you "localghost"
In countries that use diacritical characters, umlauts etc., unicode domains are somewhat common (but are often just an alias for a non-unicode primary domain).

I read an interview with the rector of the university on a reputable german news site (https://www.spiegel.de/lebenundlernen/uni/frauenquote-an-tu-...).

Also, the original source you cited clears says:

> For the next year and a half, this will apply to 100 percent of vacancies, after which the university will review the percentage covered by the scheme each year.

but frankly, I don't really understand what they mean by "in the first six months of recruitment".

dual_dingo··on Max Planck Society conducts bullying survey
Just yesterday, I read about a dutch university (Eindhoven) that wants to only hire women for the next 18 months (and give them a bonus 100k€ grant on top that male hires wouldn't get).

I am 100% pro equal rights for everybody, but this is just the opposite, and all it will achieve is to create tension, prejudice and anger towards women hired under this rules.
