dtx1··on A Brief Look at the 3DS Cartridge Protocol
Most likely none. I doubt any developer working on this intentionally created a security flaw and snuck it in under the radar. Much more likely these are all fuckups caused by the top brass requiring much more security for their devices to "protect" themselves from piracy build by developers who didn't have experience in hardware security.
dtx1··on Microsoft blocks Windows 11 workaround that enabled local accounts
Whats the issue with Secure Boot? That's an actually good idea security wise.
dtx1··on Napster sparked a file-sharing revolution 25 years ago
My personal feeling is that Spotify and youtube et. al. killed music piracy. I'd rather pay a small monthly fee and have access to an always up to date music library then torrent everything artist by artist. But that only applies because spotify has basically all the artists i like and want.
dtx1··on X is justifiably slow (2022)
Honestly we ALL know that the reason modern computing sucks is Javascript. And until we replace it with something fundamentally less awful, it'll eat every last CPU Second we have.
dtx1··on 2023 planetary heat uptake from termination shock of inadvertent geoengineering?
That... Does not sound much better?
dtx1··on 2023 planetary heat uptake from termination shock of inadvertent geoengineering?
I don't want to breath sulfur, I'm not a Klingon. We just need to accept that we will not be able to transition into non-co2 emitting energy and production fast enough (We MUST still do it!) and that co2 removal on a planetary scale is just not going to happen. Start the Geoengineering now and figure out the bugs so it's ready when we need it. If it's really true that billions of lifes depend on it, maybe it's time to grow up and do the necessary evil.
dtx1··on The KeePassXC Kerfuffle
Usually there's a binary package Compiled to whatever "upstream" considers stable. And then there are lots of AUR Packages, some binary, some src with variations.
dtx1··on The KeePassXC Kerfuffle
One of the many reasons I refuse to use Debian. You just don't get this kind of BS on Arch Linux, you get to chose what you think is right not what some maintainer decided is correct.
dtx1··on So, you want to install Caddy
Can confirm, Caddy is pretty neat and very easy to setup. I'm using it as a proxy for a streaming backend right now. The only issue that has come up is proxying webrtc connection. They connect but timeout after a while because the ICE Server is not proxied by Caddy.
dtx1··on Up Phone the Privacy Smartphone
This is being shilled to tucker carlson viewers now. The Battery off-switch is kinda interesting.
dtx1··on Google Meet rolls out multi-device adaptive audio merging
We use google meet internally where i work but i often have to work with external companies using teams, zoom and whatever else. Google Meet just works, all day, everyday for us (barring a fucked up client audio setup...) and this is such a sweet feature we've struggled with, I genuinely look forward to testing this
dtx1··on Daylight Computer – New 60fps e-paper tablet
So this is an advanced form of reflective LCD? Interesting. LTT recently tested a color display like that too[0].

A few Questions: Why is it black and white? Does the Image stay the same when the device is off? What is the surface like for the Pen? Is the Display recessed so there's parallax between pen and Display or is it laminated like an iPad? How is the repairability? Can the battery be replaced easily? How is software support going to be? Since I'm supposed to link all kinds of cloud accounts to it, I would not buy this without a statement regarding security updates and support lifetime.

Looks cool though! [0] https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=c0TcGjzKbag

> 2x Arm Cortex-A76 up to 2.2GHz > 6x Arm Cortex-A55 up to 2.0GHz > LPDDR4X > Arm Mali-G57 MC2

Not great, not terrible. I'd say lower middle class phone, roughly equivalent to the Snapdragon 680. The real question is longterm software and security support. I'd bet good money this will se one android update and security patches late or never at best.

dtx1··on Sorry, iPads
If you are on linux (and have sufficient admin rights) you can force the vpn into it's own network space and have other apps in a different one. Doesn't matter if the VPN tries to tunnel everything through itself.

dtx1··on Lithium-free sodium batteries exit the lab and enter US production
I don't know where you are from but here in Germany Surges/Lightning Strikes that damage equipment are so rare that I can't remember it ever happening to me in my lifetime. And Replacing a fixture if it eventual fails after decades is just not that hard. I did it in my Appartment and I only shocked myself twice, so it's very doable.
dtx1··on Lithium-free sodium batteries exit the lab and enter US production
> There are some original Edison bulbs that still work, yet you'd be lucky to get a year out of a modern incandescent.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zb7Bs98KmnY

> Same thing happened to LED bulbs.

Because LED Bulbs cook your LEDs and are stupid design. Get a permanent LED fixture with decent passive cooling and they will last for decades. Adapting LEDs into the same Plug as Incandescent lighting just does not work.

dtx1··on Lithium-free sodium batteries exit the lab and enter US production
Honestly after a quick google search I'm not convinced LTO Cells are applicable for that use case. Best I found on a quick search is 80wh/kg and at a low voltage and good enough but not great discharge capacity. Even in the electrical bicycle range that's just not enough to be practical, let alone competitive.

LFP at it's peak gets you there but it's also not a great experience. The Battery needs to be too large to get you enough current to be enjoyable.

That's why the 10x (even a 3x would do it) in discharge capacity is what get's me excited. That's enough that you can use only a few cells but with enough output to be a nice experience, just with short range.

dtx1··on Lithium-free sodium batteries exit the lab and enter US production
50 Thousand Cycles would make replacing batteries unnecessary for almost all usecases. I would love such a battery in an electric bike. Max Range would be quite limited compared to a Lithium Version but with 10x discharge capacity and functionally unlimited life you could make a beast of a commuter e-bike.

50000 Cycles would realistically mean you can charge the bike every day for a hundred years

dtx1··on Atomic nucleus excited with laser: A breakthrough after decades
> That process is probabilistic and measured in half-lives

> The decay back to ground state happens at a very precise rate that is not influenced by effectively anything

That sounds contradictory to me.

dtx1··on Atomic nucleus excited with laser: A breakthrough after decades
What does "exciting a nucleus" mean?
dtx1··on Sweden has long opposed nuclear weapons, but once tried to build them
I think russia would have attacked crimea as they did but the extended war would have stopped. Ukraine could for example use smaller nuclear weapons to attack military infrastructure like the crimean bridge, railway infrastructure etc.

I'm not advocating large scale nuclear war but a doctrine like france has https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Force_de_dissuasion

dtx1··on Sweden has long opposed nuclear weapons, but once tried to build them
> They didn't have a choice.

They had a shitload of nukes. That gives you a lot of choices. They just sadly chose wrong thinking that the world is better of with them not having them. Should have kept a few.

dtx1··on A tiny ultrabright laser that can melt steel
Neat! That looks like it's weithin an order of magnitude or two of becoming a real ray gun. I hope I can snatch up a few when they hit the consumer market before imdiatly getting banned.
dtx1··on Show HN: 5 Years Ago I made the Recovery Kit, I just made the RK2
I always love these cool cyberdeck style builds but whenever the bug to build my own catches me, I end up realizing i'm just trying to build a really bad notebook.

dtx1··on GrapheneOS finds Bluetooth memory corruption via ARM MTE
Thanks for the detailed explanation and i totally agree, it's not something i expect from graphene os, it's something that annoys me from googles pixels. I hope the new EU requirements to make reasonable battery swaps a thing means i get the best of both worlds.
