dtauzell··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
Even those with opinions that match the mainstream (the vote was valid) are getting threatened:

dtauzell··on U.S. Capitol Locked Down Amid Escalating Protests
I stopped reading the first article after this:

"We are told that Biden won more votes nationally than any presidential candidate in history. But he won a record low of 17 percent of counties; he only won 524 counties, as opposed to the 873 counties Obama won in 2008. Yet, Biden somehow outdid Obama in total votes."

>>Yet, Biden somehow outdid Obama in total votes.

If you look at the populations of these various counties it isn't puzzling at all.

dtauzell··on Why do we dream? A new theory on how it protects our brains
You can also write down your dreams if you wake after a dream in the middle of the night. The downside is you might start waking up frequently to write down your dreams.

dtauzell··on Deep Work and the 30-Hour Method for Learning a New Skill (2018)
A lot of shallow logistic work requires domain knowledge the juniors don’t have.

Maybe pairing would help here as a way to get more of this knowledge transferred more quickly so the shallow work can be spread out?

They are refundable tax credits so WI could be paying money they wouldn't have.
dtauzell··on Memo: Foxconn cost to Wisconsin nearing $4.5B
The tax credits are “refundable tax credits” so depending on what their taxes are the state might end up paying Foxconn.

I don't think there is such a group (or at least it is very small). What continuous deployment does do is help you find bugs faster as they get shipped sooner. It also promotes more automated testing which can help as well since manual testing is less likely to fully regress everything.
dtauzell··on Cloud DB War: Autonomous Databases
Oracle has a lot of "legacy" customers who have a lot invested in their existing Oracle infrastructure. Oracle wants to migrate these customers to their cloud. For "Enterprise" I see Oracle's biggest competitor being Azure.

I think that falls more into the "patterns" space as the problem being solved is not so clear cut. Here is a site with microservices patterns: http://microservices.io/patterns/ .
dtauzell··on How to Build Your Distributed Database
One big difference seems to be that Oracle RAC uses a shared disk for each node. This means you need a fast disk. Oracle ships a lot of data between RAC nodes so you need a fast interconnect between your nodes (e.g. infiniband).

Peapod delivers here in Milwaukee. I haven't used it much but I just noticed that they now have a "pickup" option in some cities where you drive up and they load you your vehicle. I might actually use the service more if they offer that as my biggest problem is that I usually go shopping only when I'm totally out of something I really need. If I planned ahead better I would use it more.
dtauzell··on With genetic testing, I gave my parents the gift of divorce
It said that the Dad had the child before meeting the Mom and didn't know about the child. The problems arose from the Data wanting to meet the child against the wishes of the family.

What happens if your system clock goes backwards? I think that NTP will not do this by default, but I wonder if it happens for other reasons.
dtauzell··on No Single Points of Failure
I agree that monitoring and quick recover are important. It is hard to eliminate all points of failure.

My favorite failures are what I call "distributed single points of failure". An example is a linux bug that is triggered by a cron-job that is set to run at the same time across all servers.

You can use remote powershell scripts to do the same. Configuring permissions is different, but is doable.
dtauzell··on Qwest – Refusal of NSA surveillance requests
I used to work at Qwest (and before that the company it acquired, USWest). Part of our mandatory training included a module on what to do when the authorities requested phone/network records. It was quite clear that you were supposed to bring these to the legal department. I don't know what the legal dept. was told but I found it interesting that this was even communicated to employees. Other companies I've worked for have never mentioned this.

In some sense everything is a "gift" because all the lessons we learn lead us to some ultimate spiritual goal. That said, I don't think "gift" is the best word and prefer "lesson" instead.

Would you apply the word "gift" to any horrible genocide/natural disaster that has happened? Perhaps you would, but for most people, "Lesson" will resonate better.

dtauzell··on Cancer and Startups
I recently went through this with somebody close to me. Don't forget that doctors, nurses, etc ... can't always save somebodies life, but can only prolong or make it better. You too, can make somebodies life better in many, many ways and that is as important as anything else.

I maintained an app using Netscape's LiveWire 12 years ago. Had that project been free (as in beer) I think it could have seen pretty good adoption.
