dstroot··on New HBO Documentary Claims Bitcoin Creator Satoshi Nakamoto Is Len Sassaman
That would be done because the user base of windows at the time dwarfed that of Linux. There are other better ways to cover your identity.
dstroot··on Mitmproxy 11: Full HTTP/3 Support
Companies that use something like Zscaler would be highly likely to block QUIC traffic to force it onto TCP.

You said this much more constructively that I might - I really dislike when people post long form stuff on X/Twitter. For those who may not know you can reply to a tweet with “@threadreaderapp unroll” to have a reconstructed doc sent to you. The bot will reply directly to you and only you after the unrolling is complete. Hope that helps someone.
dstroot··on Things[5] I Learned About Leadership from the Death and Rebirth of Microsoft
No single one item on the list is revolutionary. In fact they all seem like common sense. I think Satya reversed the mis-management of Ballmer mainly. But his cultural changes (even embraced open source) were huge!
dstroot··on Vercel ends open-source sponsorship program giving projects 24hr notice
“VC Money Hose” has been redirected to anything with AI in the name. “Vercel, powered by AI” would receive plenty of funding. ;)
dstroot··on Study finds 268% higher failure rates for Agile software projects
I like to think about it like this. If you are building a skyscraper in Manhattan you need a plan. It has to be engineered. The materials must be specified and ordered long before construction starts. There are engineering practices and building codes that create a measure of safety. There is an order to the construction process. The project plan would likely be called “waterfall”. If you attempted an agile approach of dropping off a team and saying for our first sprint let’s just dig for two weeks, then we’ll plan what’s next is not going to cut it. Agile on the other hand is great for smaller, less complex efforts where the desired outcome is “fluid”. Different methodologies work best for different things.
dstroot··on Insects and other animals have consciousness
The article defines “phenomenal consciousness “ as feeling pain, pleasure or hunger, but not necessarily a sense of self.
dstroot··on Preview of Explore Logs, a new way to browse your logs without writing LogQL
Risky how exactly? If it has data in it that it shouldn't it's a problem no matter where it resides.

Can anyone share an example of edge middleware that might protect you on Vercel?
dstroot··on Nextdoor's Heisensubscribe (and Other Dark Patterns)
If Nextdoor was extra hostile they could swap the “Heisensubscribe” toggle each time you visit the page. Hmmm…that didn’t work. I’ll go back in and toggle it the other way. Hmm…that didn’t work either?
dstroot··on End of Life for Twilio Authy Desktop App
I migrated to 2FAS, which is open source, free and has a nice UI. Used Authy for ages and just switched. Recommended…

dstroot··on My experiment in phonelessness was a failure, and it also changed my life
“Why, exactly, are we rendered so uncomfortable by concentrating on things that matter — the things we thought we wanted to do with our lives — that we’d rather flee into distractions, which, by definition, are what we don’t want to be doing with our lives? When you try to focus on something you deem important, you’re forced to face your limits, an experience that feels especially uncomfortable precisely because the task at hand is one you value so much.”

dstroot··on Ask HN: Good books on philosophy of engineering?
+1 for Skunk Works. Great story, well written and the engineering challenges they overcame were astounding.
dstroot··on The Naz.API Credential Stuffing List
This. People assume weak security. They think if they lose their house or car key they can get in some other way, or a locksmith can “fix it”, or they can order another car key at the dealer.

The concept that if I lose my key I am totally screwed doesn’t align.

dstroot··on "Millennium Camera" to take a 1k-year long-exposure photo
A 1k year-long exposure will result in … a gray blob with no useful information. Now a 1k-year timelapse of one photo per day made into a film would be amazing!
dstroot··on What has a 1 in a million chance? (2010)
Reminds me of “one in a million is next Tuesday”:

Worth a read if you are an SRE.

dstroot··on Things engineers believe about Web development
Well… if you have ever supported a desktop app you know how difficult “version dispersion”, users that never update their OS, users that always update their OS, different hardware, other hostile software, etc. can be. If you know, you know.
dstroot··on What happened to blogging for the hell of it?
> “ people just would not shut up about the idea of making money writing a blog, making a living as a blogger, which made about as much sense to me as the idea of going into business as a dinner-party guest, or a book club participant.”

Thanks for this quote - brilliant.

dstroot··on FTX thief cashes out millions during Bankman-Fried trial
From what I have read SBF doesn't "feel things" like compassion, remorse, or respect for authority and government. On one hand one could argue SBF stole the crypto (after all he was in the best position to know both the wallets and the exact timing it was going to come crashing down) and he is raising cash to flee - if that is even possible. On the other hand it's kind of brilliant timing if SBF didn't take the crypto for the actual parties to put more suspicion on SBF. The trial does not seem to be going well for him in either case.

> Any suggestions where to find data driven jobs?

My experiences suggest a large measure of caution. Many organizations describe themselves as data-driven and many actually do try. However humans are humans and many will be “data driven” when it aligns with what they want to do, otherwise it’s off for “more data” or a “new perspective”. In other words sometimes data driven means use data when it supports my already staked out position. I hate to be so cynical but I can’t help it.

dstroot··on Kenyan moderators decry toll of training of AI
What is stopping us from creating a "supervisory AI" that understands the difference between good content and bad content and having it perform the role of these humans? More broadly speaking training and overseeing a sufficiently advanced AI seems like it could only be done effectively by another AI. The human oversight could be temporarily redirected to validating the supervisory AI.
dstroot··on ChatGPT-4 is More Creative than You
A recent Wharton study compared the ideation capabilities of ChatGPT-4 with those of students at an elite university. The study found that:

1. ChatGPT-4 is significantly better (faster and cheaper) at generating new product ideas than motivated, trained engineering and business students at an elite university.

2. The LLM ideas are of higher quality on average (as measured by purchase-intent surveys).

3. The majority of the best ideas were generated by ChatGPT-4, not by the students: 35 of the top 40 ideas (87.5%) were generated by ChatGPT-4.

4. ChatGPT-4 generated the highest-rated idea, with an 11% higher purchase probability than the best human idea.

5. Providing ChatGPT-4 with a few examples of highly rated ideas further increased its performance.

dstroot··on The .meta directory: let's tidy things up
This is such a great idea. I kind of hate all the top level clutter in my repos and it seems to get worse every year. Wonderful suggestion. Whether it’s .meta, .config or .etc I don’t really care.
dstroot··on Google no longer automatically indexes websites?
SERP: Search engine results page. I asked ChatGPT.

"SERP stands for Search Engine Results Page. It refers to the page displayed by a search engine in response to a user's query. When a user enters a search term or keyword, the search engine generates a list of relevant web pages and presents them in the form of a SERP. The SERP typically includes a combination of organic search results, which are the regular listings based on relevance to the query, and paid advertisements, which are sponsored listings that advertisers pay for to appear prominently on the page. SERPs often contain additional elements such as featured snippets, knowledge graphs, image or video results, local map results, and other specialized features, depending on the specific search engine and query."
