“Except for day one”
dsmithn··on Earnings and Labor Supply of U.S. Physicians
They call it the ROAD to happiness. Radiology, ophthalmology, anesthesia, dermatology.
dsmithn··on El Niño May Break a Record and Reshape Weather Around the Globe
I can’t even find the quote you’re referencing in the article. It seems like you subconsciously changed it to meet your interpretation…

> The ocean seesaws between these states every two to seven years, though the past three years unusually saw three back-to-back La Niñas.

dsmithn··on The promise of crypto has not lived up to its initial excitement
I measure it by pizzas per Bitcoin. It’s definitely gone up.
dsmithn··on Elon: Let Me Help You Speed Run the Content Moderation Learning Curve
“The fact”? Got a source for those facts other than Musk?
dsmithn··on You may be denied life insurance for carrying naloxone (2018)
I wanted to try moderation and got a prescription for Naltrexone - I ended up just quitting cold turkey and never looked back.

Threw away my Rx without taking a pill...and now I can't get life insurance.

dsmithn··on YouTube suspends Donald Trump's channel
I think the point is US based companies would have to compete with less regulated foreign social media platforms.
dsmithn··on Police found pickup truck full of bombs and guns near Capitol
How else would you know if the carrier is an "average civilian" without some sort of documentation?
dsmithn··on TikTok has recently traded at valuations of $105-110B on private markets
I think the more appropriate wording would be "completely pulled out of thin air and not relevant calculation"
dsmithn··on FCC will require phone carriers to authenticate calls by June 2021 [pdf]
I really hope so. I stopped answering calls from unknown numbers until a year ago when I got a call from the same number twice and it was a paramedic calling to let me know my wife was in a car accident. She was awake enough to remember my number but her phone was lost.

So now I can't help but answer calls from unknown numbers even though I know 999 out of 1000 of them will be spam. It's abusive and an incredible waste of everyone's time and energy, not to mention in my case I wasted 10 minutes of critical time I should have been with her at the hospital.

dsmithn··on Things I learnt the hard way in thirty years of software development
any experience with newtagtime.com ?
dsmithn··on Google Is Turning Off the Works-with-Nest API
It can be hard especially if you don't have a replacement just lying around.
dsmithn··on New tapes reveal Cambridge Analytica CEO’s boasts of voter suppression
From the article: "Jane told Seven Days that they had recently sold a house in Maine that had belonged to her family since the 1900s, and used the proceeds to purchase the new property, which is located in North Hero (population 803, as of the 2010 census)."

Why would he have bought a house when he was planning on moving to the White House?

dsmithn··on Healthy California Act: proposal to make findings about single-payer healthcare
In what way is Vermont one of the poorest states?
dsmithn··on Deep learning algorithm diagnoses skin cancer as well as seasoned dermatologists
Respectfully disagree. Telemedicine is going to be an important aspect of medicine, Dermatology in particular.

Rural and underdeveloped areas are going to be the largest market IMO. Everyone can access a smartphone but not everyone has the luxury of seeing a Doctor in person, and if they do the time/travel costs can be significant.

Disclosure, I work for an EHR startup with a Telemedicine product.

dsmithn··on Questions to Ask a Potential Tech Employer
That misses the answer, followup, and reference. Unless I'm missing something...

- q: Would you say your colleagues are good at reading your emotional state, or still learning? # TODO: Better wording so the answer is not so obvious a: Research shows the most important factor in team effectiveness is psychological safety, a "shared belief held by members of a team that the team is safe for interpersonal risk-taking." One component of this is high "average social sensitivity," or that everyone is good at reading the emotional state of others. followup: Do you feel like your opinion is heard, respected, and valued? ref: http://www.nytimes.com/2016/02/28/magazine/what-google-learn... pri: 1 tags: [culture]

dsmithn··on A free shipping mystery
You have to ask for the prime extension. I've ordered probably 100 items and the few times an item was late I just chatted with an amazon rep and a month of prime was added.
dsmithn··on Free email address validation API for web forms
@gmailcom is invalid but doesn't suggest @gmail.com, might be another improvement.
dsmithn··on 22-year old community college dropout starts $100M company, Nasty Gal
Just to clarify, in 2006 she was a 22 year old dropout, and it was last year that her company sold $100M.
dsmithn··on SendGrid Fires Company Evangelist After Twitter Fracas
That's not an apology.
dsmithn··on Ask HN: What chrome/Firefox extensions/devtools do you use for web development?
SQLite Manager for FireFox
dsmithn··on Show HN: quickly share UML diagrams
This is the kind of thing that by the time I need to make another diagram I will have forgotten about it. Hopefully I'll never need to, but if I do I'm bookmarking this in hopes I'll remember.

It's not complicated, no fancy UI or flashy landing page. Nice web app.

dsmithn··on The PyCon Incident
> That she got a little too hot-headed and posted a picture seems to be all anyone wants to talk about.

Because that's what got the guy fired. If she had just posted a tweet complaining, or just made a blog post talking about how those kinds of comments were offensive, people would have learned but nobody's life would have been ruined. Instead she choose to post their picture online AND continue to make a big deal about it. That's a personal vendetta.

dsmithn··on How A Y Combinator Startup Is Born: The Story Of Strikingly
Because they have some high quality content.
dsmithn··on How A Y Combinator Startup Is Born: The Story Of Strikingly
Previous discussion on Strikingly, https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=5359507

edit: just noticed, the top and bottom of their home page are almost exactly the same. Except for the size of the logo. Interesting.

dsmithn··on My Amazon bestseller made me nothing
No, he's saying everyone else expected him to make more than that because traditionally authors don't speak publicly on the amount of money they make and the number of books sold.
dsmithn··on DuckDuckGo Terminal Emulator

dsmithn··on Your Rate - A better way to calculate your hourly freelance rate
I look at it like, "here's how much I need to be able to charge per hour, what can I do to make my time worth that?"
dsmithn··on Show HN: Hey Who should I vote for? (Our Sandy-day-off project)
I should add, I like the site and the concept, but it'd be interesting to be able to apply some weight or scale to the opinions. Perhaps I don't think healthcare should be universal but I would never vote for someone who would ban same sex marriages.
dsmithn··on Show HN: Hey Who should I vote for? (Our Sandy-day-off project)
I'd like to see sources for the candidate's opinions. For example, I don't think Romney denies that global warming is real. http://cleantechnica.com/2012/09/07/romney-admits-global-war...
