dskloet··on Why A4? – The Mathematical Beauty of Paper Size
I figured since for Reddit this functionality is provided by RES, for HN it should be HNES so I searched "hacker news enhancement suite" and found this [1] which does list "Ability to tag users" among its features.

dskloet··on Blockchains by number of nodes/validators
Where does this get its data? Dash has close to 4,000 nodes but here it's listed with 27.
dskloet··on Risk Everything (2007)
> I feel the urge to just post the wiki entry for the Kelly criterion.

Apparently not that strong of an urge ;-).

For those (like me) who didn't know it yet: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Kelly_criterion

dskloet··on Climate change makes the days shorter [video]
I tried to put the length of the video (5'37") and the name of the YouTube channel (SciShow) in the title but it got removed and left only "[video]". I wonder why.
dskloet··on Tesla Virtual Power Plant
And hope that won't realize they're destroying their battery without enough compensation?
dskloet··on The Zimbu programming language
> What modern programming language would require capitalization?

In Go fields are made public by starting their name with an upper case.

> But, time-of-use rates are a currently underutilized idea

Is it not normal in the US to pay less for electricity at night and on weekends?

That's very common in the places (Netherlands and Switzerland) where I've lived, for as long as I can remember, and seems much more low-tech than using consumer batteries to supply back to the grid and paying them a custom rate.

dskloet··on Tesla Virtual Power Plant
How can they pay powerwall users $2 if they're not actually charging $2?
dskloet··on Tesla Virtual Power Plant
I would think that just charging $2/kWh during peak time would be enough to bring down peak load without using any batteries.
dskloet··on Show HN: I made a web-based notepad with a built in unit calculator
I also notice when typing a number it gets entered twice. So I'll type a 3 and get 33.

On my Android phone I can't see the last letter of some lines and I'm unable to zoom out.

dskloet··on Ask HN: What are some cool but obscure data structures you know about?
Invertible Bloom Lookup Tables. They're like Bloom filters but you can also remove elements and even reconstruct elements in certain cases. Useful for syncing 2 databases which are almost in-sync, by sending only a small amount of data between them. It's used by Bitcoin nodes to communicate the contents of newly mined blocks.
dskloet··on Ask HN: What are some cool but obscure data structures you know about?
> other language's don't include them

stl::map and stl::set in C++ are actually a tree map and tree set.

dskloet··on Magnus Carlsen to give up World Championship title
Chess on an 8x8 board is not NP-hard. That doesn't mean it's easy but invoking NP-hardness is kind of meaningless.
dskloet··on Show HN: I built an app for when I talk too much in online meetings
Ok, but regardless "too much" heavily depends on context. It can't be that x minutes is the correct amount of time to talk regardless of what you are saying.
dskloet··on Show HN: I built an app for when I talk too much in online meetings
I don't understand how it can know if you talk too much. 30 seconds can be too much if you don't have anything relevant to say but 30 minutes can be fine if you have a lot of important things to say. Does it transcribe what you say and match on bad patterns or something?
dskloet··on How many decimals of pi do we need? (2016)
Calculating the circumference of a circle isn't the only thing pi is used for. And small errors at the start of a calculation can become big errors at the end. So I don't find this argument very convincing.

dskloet··on Show HN: I developed a fast general purpose sorting algorithm
How does it compare to pdqsort?
dskloet··on My students cheated... a lot
The problems we had were way way simpler than anything deserving an acronym. You'd think there was only one way to do it and yet it was not hard to distinguish plagiarism.
dskloet··on My students cheated... a lot
I used something similar when I was a TA 20 years ago and while your assumption seems reasonable, there are actually a lot of different ways to solve even quite simple tasks and most cheating is very obvious on manual inspection.
dskloet··on How Google will spend $1M on the internet for you
Well, the domain of the article is about ads, so for the article itself the title might make sense. But here out of context it became confusing.
dskloet··on How Google will spend $1M on the internet for you
Very confusing title if you don't know it's about ads.
dskloet··on Inflation is differential and restructuring (2021)
They aren't things you can add up, one is a cause of the other.

Monetary inflation is an increase in the money supply which happens when more money is borrowed, usually as a result of lower interest rates. Price inflation is in increase in the prices of good and services.

Monetary inflation causes price inflation and other things can also cause price inflation. But it's meaningless to add up monetary inflation and price inflation.

dskloet··on PBS SpaceTime
It was good with Kelsey, but after she had to leave and was replaced, it somehow became really bad.
dskloet··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
Why not use the third dimension and make it thicker to fit a decent battery?
dskloet··on I want an iPhone Mini-sized Android phone
I would buy this if it was dual SIM (nano+eSIM) but honestly iPhone 13 mini is still too big for my taste. No wider than iPhone 4 would be ideal for me. Fine if it's thicker to fit a decent battery.

I'm currently using a Pixel 3a with multiple cracks in the screen. Willing to drop a lot of money on a phone but there isn't a single phone I want.

dskloet··on Fig (YC S20) – Adds IDE-style autocomplete to your existing terminal
That's a lot of words without actually saying why you think it's so bad.

What's so bad about this post?

dskloet··on A Swedish skier was basically frozen, but lived (2016)
> Even after a couple of hours out of the water, Bågenholm’s core temperature was 56.7 degrees Farenheit
