dskloet··on Temporal: The 9-year journey to fix time in JavaScript
That's a great example of the kind of wrong assumption that makes dealing with dates and times so challenging.

Some countries start on a Friday or Saturday and until 2022 Iran could start any day of the week although never at 3AM.

dskloet··on Gemini 2.5
I solved it in less than 15 minutes while walking my dog, no pen or paper. But I wouldn't claim to be a random person without math skills. And my very first guess was correct.

It was a fun puzzle though and I'm surprised I didn't know it already. Thanks for sharing.

dskloet··on Groups underpin modern math
Why do you need to merge counts if you look for unique elements? Isn't the count always 1 for each element present? Isn't the key to shard your chunks so each element can appear in at most one chunk?
dskloet··on Ask HN: What is the best code base you ever worked on?
Code search not just across the entire code base but across all of time.

Obviously extraordinary claims require extraordinary evidence. I just posted hoping that more knowledgeable people than me can comment.
dskloet··on Show HN: 2024 Math Challenge
Nice game!

It seems to fail to compute this properly:

2^0+(sqrt(sqrt(2)))^(4!)

It should be 65 but gives E.

Do you climb during the day and glide at night to save battery? And if so, how much difference does it make?
dskloet··on Would You Kill the Fat Man? [pdf]
Why are those 5 people there? How can I be sure they'd be killed? How can I be sure they don't want to be killed. It's not wrong not to kill the one man because you can't be sure of the situation.
dskloet··on Investigation: 78% of carbon offset projects globally are “likely junk“
> Downside of CC is it's still too expensive

Some googling suggests that it's $200 per metric ton, is that right?

That would put the cost of capturing the world's entire footprint at $7T per year. That's a lot of money but seems pretty close to worth doing. Especially given that once we decide to do it, it will get cheaper quickly.

What the... That's not "an abundance of caution". That's the only possible course of action.

Genius way to harvest lots of business ideas!
dskloet··on Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York
Even for poor citizens, electricity shouldn't be subsidized. They should get straight up money and decide for themselves if they want to use it for (non-subsidized) electricity or if they can use it more efficiently on something else.
dskloet··on Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York
If they can only exist when subsidized, we need to decide explicitly whether the business is worth subsidizing. Not keep lots of businesses alive through subsidized electricity while they would otherwise not be profitable.
dskloet··on Proof of work is temporarily illegal in New York
It shouldn't be subsidized. That's the real problem.
dskloet··on Size is the best predictor of code quality (2011)
You can't just divide a code base that's entangled. If you disentangle it, you'll remove some bugs in the process. My feeling is that it's super-linear for this reason.
