dsaavy··on Facebook, Twitter block the NY Post from posting
Reddit absolutely revises written record, like this: https://techcrunch.com/2016/11/23/reddit-huffman-trump/

So I'd certainly say Reddit is at least comparable. Additionally, I see fact checks on tons of conservative posts on Facebook and Twitter (rightfully so most of the time). But the same procedure isn't followed for liberal posts.

I haven't seen any possible misinformation warnings on Facebook or Twitter for something like: people claiming the BLEXIT supporters at Trump's recent speech were paid. According to ABC News, some supporters travel and room/board were paid (but they didn't release any of the emails, just allegedly quoted them). So it would be misleading to say that BLEXIT supporters were paid to attend the speech, it should be labeled as a "possibly misleading" statement like the claims from the right typically are. I mean, the emails haven't even been released and/or verified as existing and people are just running with it because it's ABC?

Edit: would love to know why I'm getting downvotes for providing a comment with a source and a different viewpoint?

dsaavy··on Competition and Quarter-Life Crises
The only thing I could find it this interview where Thiel talks about a quarter-life crisis: https://conversationswithbillkristol.org/video/peter-thiel/
dsaavy··on If Then: How the Simulmatics Corporation Invented the Future
It might be a solution although I think regulating this specific form of political ads would have unintended negative consequences.

I think things like hard cap campaign contribution limits (as in overall campaign fundraising cap rather than by donor type) could do more good to even the playing field. And it should reduce the web of "IOUs" that elected officials come into office with.

dsaavy··on If Then: How the Simulmatics Corporation Invented the Future
That's a good question, the only thing I could find (and take it with a grain of salt) was that Trump spent $5 per vote compared to Clinton's $10 per vote if you assume all the money they raised was spent. https://www.reuters.com/article/us-usa-election-spending/at-...

It is interesting to think of campaign efficiency (or propaganda efficiency lol) as CPV (cost per vote) to make it parallel to advertising metrics like CPC and CPI.

dsaavy··on If Then: How the Simulmatics Corporation Invented the Future
This realization really pushed me away from mainstream media entirely. I explicitly remember and can still find articles about Obama's campaign being cutting edge by using "behavioral data" (https://theweek.com/articles/451328/how-obama-won-internet). Yet when the same actions were taken by conservative candidates it was ridiculed. As an independent I just couldn't trust these sources any longer.

Yes the methods of data collection were slightly different between Obama's campaign and what Cambridge Analytica did and sold to conservative candidates. Obama's campaign claimed they didn't do as much with the data and it was within the FB ToS, but these claims don't change the ethics and since 2004 both parties have been building their data infrastructure out to sway voters (https://slate.com/news-and-politics/2012/10/obamas-secret-we...).

Both parties are nefarious in their use of data and attempt to persuade voters through micro-targeted outrage, and it makes me wary of ever voting for either of the two parties' candidate.

dsaavy··on Tech firms face growing resentment of parent employees during Covid-19
After reading many, many comments here I think it's become very evident to me how important it is to live with/near extended family and very close friends. It takes a village to raise a child and living as isolated parents far from friends or family that can help in raising children is not sustainable.

Americans (and maybe other western civilizations) seem to have removed ourselves so far from community that we forgot what true community is even for. Sharing resources and helping others simply to be a part of the "tribe" without having to pay for every single thing. This transactional consumerist economy has pushed us to where we're paying for everything, have incredibly fragile networks of dependency, and can't trust anyone unless money and a contract is involved.

Sure it's not a high bar, I just wanted to point out what his background was. I don't want to suggest that you need specific credentials in order to conduct reasonable scientific investigations either.

His videos do a decent job of replicating the behavior seen in the UFO videos in a simple way and will give experts in the area a starting point to agree/disagree with his conclusions. Especially with the simple descriptions of the gimbal behavior/limitations in range of motion paired with the data given in the view of the video.

dsaavy··on Airline pilots landing at LAX report “a guy in jetpack” flying alongside them
Mick West on YouTube has some pretty good explanations behind the UFO sightings by the US Navy.

Here he goes through why the glare rotates while the horizon does not (and recreates the phenomenon): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ka_bX9Hx1H0

Here he highlights the relevant gimbal information on the Navy display that explains the "sudden" movements of the UFO: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=U1di0XIa9RQ&t=251s

He's a retired developer who is now a science writer and skeptical investigator (just to give you an idea of where his expertise/bias may lie)

dsaavy··on Hunting the Nearly-Invisible Personal Website
I've been subscribed for a few months now and just want to say thank you! The content is always refreshingly outside of the standard topics of news streams and discussions.
dsaavy··on Patrick Collison's Questions
> We pay people less and make them compete for the mere privilege of holding a job. Then, we tell them what to do, disrespecting their intelligence and autonomy and ability to make something they can be proud of.

This fully embodies the experience of the modern-day Agile experience in software development. "I know you're a senior but I (a non-technical Product Manager/Scrum Master) am going to have to check in multiple times a day and dictate every single feature and how it's built."

dsaavy··on Two Years to Make $10 in Software Revenue
At least they made it out of that first stage! Full-time employees get stuck in that stage all the time by just scheduling meetings but never actually getting any real work done that drives revenue. Looks like they were able to realize that meeting with people without a specific agenda and monetized path forward is usually just wheel-spinning.

By making that leap and going out on their own, they were able to accelerate that learning process and condense it to months rather than years (or never). Painful, but useful.

dsaavy··on There’s Still a Gaping Hole in the Economy
While some of the industry changes in the article are clearly just a result of the pandemic (like air transportation, performing arts and spectator sports, amusements and recreation, etc.), I feel like a lot of these are actually just condensed timescale changes that were happening anyways. Recessions tend to do that, this once was just incredibly abrupt and compact.

Industries like movies, travel arrangement services, museums, etc. were all on the decline and now will simply be reduced to a minimal existence. Supercenters, couriers and messengers, postal services, etc. were all increasing in importance due to a more digital consumer pattern and increasing economic inequality. Now their growth is rapidly accelerated and the cultural shifts that have gone on for the last decade have been amplified.

I'm curious to see how this all plays out. The divide between the "haves and have-nots" is growing and this pandemic has just amplified how screwed a large class of workers are.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: What's your quarantine side project?
I feel like if you were able to make it more like milliondollarhomepage it could take off. Something where the result of paying money is made more publicly visible. For me it's missing the aspect that makes me want to talk about it to friends.
dsaavy··on Ask HN: Where do you buy and sell side projects?
Good list, thank you!
dsaavy··on Dataset of VCs investing in seed and Series A+ rounds
Can't be used for analytical purposes... Welp looks like no one should even download or look at it. You could violate the ToS by looking at the data and drawing conclusions!
dsaavy··on Show HN: A basketball hoop to maximize shots that go in [video]
I put up a giant wall of these in my home and they're incredibly useful. You can build any type of contraption and throw a cleat on the back of it and boom, just put it on the big wall. Reconfigure it every month, build new things to mount up there, it truly is simple and versatile. French cleats truly are terrific.
dsaavy··on Ask HN: Why did you leave the tech industry?
Wrapping my head around modules, packages, and libraries while learning Python a while back was the biggest roadblock and most discouraging part. Trying to figure out why certain things wouldn't be installed was a slog. At the same time, this struggle definitely taught me much more than I would've learned otherwise. One topic it pushed me into unwillingly was containers which was definitely a benefit in the long run.
dsaavy··on The software industry's greatest sin: hiring
Love this idea, going to steal it for the next time I'm hiring someone.
dsaavy··on GoWFH: Find and list verified Work From Home and Remote jobs from top companies
Nice, sounds like you launched quickly after getting back to the project and looks like you're fixing bugs and gathering feedback as you go. That's the road to success with new products, best of luck!
dsaavy··on GoWFH: Find and list verified Work From Home and Remote jobs from top companies
I like it, seems a little better than most job sites that claim to filter on remote work. How long did you work on this before launching?
dsaavy··on Tectonix Uses “Anonymized” Cell Phone Data to Track Spring Break Migration
Found this visual analysis of "anonymized" cell phone data interesting. How is it truly anonymized if you can track the movement of the devices? Correlating data over an extended periods can help you identify the device owner just be seeing its daily movements (home locations, work locations, frequently visited places, etc.).

If anyone could explain how this isn't concerning I would love to hear more information on what is done with data like this to make sure it's truly close to anonymous. Would like to hear the other perspective.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: Best sleep trackers?
For me it was a few general trends that I focused on combating due to their clear correlation with poor sleep. They weren't new or groundbreaking, but the data really hammered home the point for me.

Basically the main things were:

- Avoiding alcohol at night entirely (and no more than 1 if it was a social event I felt like drinking at) - Running for at least 3 miles at about 70-80% max heart rate (or shorter distances with higher intensity) guarantees a night of at least 2.5 hours of deep sleep and up to 3.5 according to the app. Otherwise I average around 1 hour of deep sleep on a normal day. - I'm a type 1 diabetic so sleeping with my blood sugar at around 80 mg/dL means I get a full night of restful sleep. When I'm above 120 mg/dL I start losing quality sleep, and above 200 mg/dL I get no deep sleep and low amounts of quality sleep with a higher heart rate.

All these things before the app I had a gut feeling they were minor impacts on my sleep, but turns out they were incredibly impactful. Looking back at my time in college makes me wonder sometimes how much knowledge I didn't retain or learn due to poor sleep and health habits. Hindsight is 20/20 though.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: Best sleep trackers?
Autosleep for Apple Watch has had a significant impact on my life and I always rave about it to friends. I've been able to recognize choices in my daily life that significantly impact my sleep quality and have made changes that have improved my sleep because of it.

I don't know how accurate it is in terms of tracking restless legs unless the movement of your legs causes movement of your upper body that would impact watch acceleration sensors and gyroscope?

Quality sleep seems to have a cascading impact on the rest of life so this app has been hands down the most useful purchase I've ever made in the software category.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: How can I help other small businesses stay productive during COVID-19?
An additional thing we've come up with today is purchasing future services for businesses we'll be using. Getting some cash flow to businesses who might be struggling over the next few months might help them stay afloat.

We're prioritizing by critical services we interact with first, and then going down the list.

dsaavy··on Show HN: Write a private diary using good old email
Non-technical users could just use something like Zapier or Automate.io to email them reminders that they can reply to.
dsaavy··on Toyota will transform 175-acre Japan site into a ‘prototype city of the future’
I feel like the only way for this to work is for an individual with the rights connections and background to pull together an all-star team for all of the areas of expertise needed for city designed. Then combine all of these experts with some strict policy barring corporations over a certain size from doing business there, and limiting the number of properties a singular entity, individual, or groups of entities can control. Add in some actual infrastructure design choices that physically limit the ability for large scale businesses to operate efficiently and maybe it would work? So basically combine physical infrastructure limitations with policy limitations to influence culture.

Promoting only small lifestyle type businesses and limiting the ability for one person or business to dominate the landscape might be able to deter the city from becoming just like any other.

Obviously designing and running a city is incredibly complex with an unknown number of variables so the probability of success if very low. Still something I like to daydream about occasionally.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: How to pair down from too many ideas to the one(s) to pursue?
Just an idea that I haven’t done myself or heard of anyone doing.

Randomly select 3 of your viable ideas. Put up 3 static sites with some marketing materials and/or “demos” without actually building anything.

Market them a little with word of mouth, social media, a few dollars of paid ads, cold emails, etc.

The one that gets the most pre-sales in a week or month or some timeframe is the one you build. Refund all of the other ones if they have pre-sales.

dsaavy··on Ask HN: What did you do that has changed your life the most?
Meditation as regularly as possible, whether it’s 3 minutes or 30 minutes.

Has helped digest conscious and subconscious thoughts, occurrences throughout my day, and emotions. My family and friends have mentioned a noticeable change in my personality as being much more relaxed and insightful no matter the circumstance. That’s without them knowing I’ve been meditating consistently for the past year.
