dryicerx··on Ask HN: Who is hiring? (November 2021)
VMware Tanzu | Software Engineer Roles | Remote, Palo Alto, Austin, (Anywhere)

VMware Tanzu is tightly coupling Kubernetes and modern app development workflows in to the already widely used vSphere virtualization platform. There are multiple engineering roles, everything from k8s internals, to networking, storage, virtualization, and everything in between. Looking for good all around problem solvers, plus if you are already familiar with k8s and golang, but not a prerequisite.

dryicerx··on Ask HN: What tiny purchases have disproportionately improved your life?
Came here to post this. Also, vacuum insulated mugs and tumblers for hot/cold drinks as well.
dryicerx··on Windows 365 Cloud PC
This is exactly what VMware Horizon VDI does to create desktop VMs very quickly, called Instant Clone (aka VM Fork), and has been around for several years now.

With that, you don't even need to do deduplication after the fact, it comes for free. When a new VM is forked, it's memory and disk are copy-on-write from the source/parent VM.

> Unless they mean it'll instantly show a loading screen, I'll bet it doesn't.

You absolutely can. I am not sure what tech Microsoft is using, but a similar experience can be had with VMware Horizon VDI product with something called Instant Clone, which is essentially forking an already booted up Desktop VM. On each esxi hypervisor host, you would have one of these parent/seed VMs that is booted up and ready in a frozen state, and when a new desktop VM is needed, it's created from the seed/parent using copy-on-write memory/disk and runtime state less than a second.

dryicerx··on K0s – Zero Friction Kubernetes
Some googling satisfied my curiosity about the k0s vs. k3s

https://www.reddit.com/r/kubernetes/comments/jumaqj/k0s_yet_... https://medium.com/@saiyampathak/k0s-yet-another-kubernetes-...

dryicerx··on K0s – Zero Friction Kubernetes
What differentiates this from k3s? Seems like there's a lot of overlap. Would be great if there was a quick summary of why someone would use this instead of k3s/microk8s/minikube/etc.
dryicerx··on Show HN: Lynk – Securely expose local TCP and HTTP services to the web
Any plans on offering a ssh reverse tunnel endpoint? This makes life so much easier as no special client is required.

dryicerx··on Stenographer – A full-packet-capture utility
A bit surprised to see no support for DPDK. While using AF_PACKET makes the project a bit more portable, you'll be able to save a lot of cycles by using skipping the kernel all together.
dryicerx··on Tesla’s Groundbreaking UX
Odd, I've had the exact opposite reaction. I will say from a functional point of view, it's excellent and feature packed. But from an aesthetic and consistency point of view, it still has a long way to go.

For example, it's as if there are actually 4 different UI's that share almost nothing [instrument cluster ui, center console ui, google maps ui, garmin ui (yes, there are two different navs)], each of which has it's own set of controls with a unique style.

That said, it's a great start (given they're such a new company and the ui is designed from scratch), and I'm excited to see what they'll have in store in the future.

dryicerx··on The Flat Sink
A best of both worlds would be a flat sink that's angled/sloped towards the wall
dryicerx··on Gephi - The CDDL1/GPL3 Photoshop for graphs
http://zoom.it/Lxrz This was a few months ago when I was playing with Gephi and decided to visualize the user interactions on the #startups IRC channel (graph layout in Gephi, rendered in Batik)
dryicerx··on Show HN: Github for Designers
A few months ago I made http://artevolve.com pretty much to mimic github for graphics/art... but doesn't seem like designers or artsy folks were that interested in it.
dryicerx··on A brief guide to Tech Internships for CS students
You're right in that it's about experience and not about the money, BUT if it's a tech company that can't properly compensate, it should be a big red light.

All the internships I've done and folks I knew in CS/CE/EE, I don't recall anyone having an unpaid internship.

dryicerx··on BASH autocomplete for SSH
Two more places to extract hostnames for ssh auto completion are .ssh/known_hosts and the .ssh/config.

Or give zsh a try, simply autoload compinit and it will do ssh/sftp auto completions along with a boatload more out of the box.

dryicerx··on Show HN: Tofu -- (Yet another) C web framework
Another +1 for mongoose, it's great for adding a quick web interface to a c/c++ program quickly (ie. status or quick admin interface)... but I wouldn't use it as a web-framework for serving multiple users or to the public on the web though.
dryicerx··on Photographers: Please Stop Using Flash
Is there any evidence that customers/clients want or like to view the full screen version? Everyone I've asked as well as my self find it annoying (specially the welcome screen directly going in to full screen, along with playing music automatically).
dryicerx··on TrueCrypt User Held in Contempt of Court
That's assuming the same algorithm is used throughout.

You can use one algorithm to encrypt/decrypt the original content. But you can use a different algorithm (with a different key) that would output a different output.

The secondary algorithm would be one that given a some text (ciphertext from the original encryption) along with the desired output, would return a suitable key. The most basic example to prove the point would be XOR.

dryicerx··on Why linux doesn't have a "wheel" group
The etymology of the company WheelGroup (now aquired by Cisco) makes a lot more sense now... http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/WheelGroup
dryicerx··on #startups Channel Chatter Visualized
The data was from the IRC logs over the last 18 months or so. Data was scraped from the log files looking for messages that were directed at other users which created this directed graph. The data was then fed to Gephi to get the svg output.

A SVG Version of the file: http://stuff.janitha.com/startups_chatter.2.svg feel free to do whatever with it.

edit: a much higher resolution render by 'count': http://zoom.it/Lxrz

dryicerx··on Is AT&T a Monopoly in the Making?
So T&AT&T
dryicerx··on New AWS feature: Run your website from Amazon S3
I noticed the author is still using a web server on their own for commenting.... but with something like Disqus for commenting (applied to posts client side using js) and linking out to google for searching, you can completely eliminate the need for having a web server for hosting simple blog sites.
dryicerx··on Here is the biggest mistake you will make on Amazon EC2…
Site's IP points EC2... While the site is down, google cache to the rescue: http://tinyurl.com/4o2psun
dryicerx··on Show HN: New Punchd website (like foursquare for the masses)
Excellent work.

Out of curiosity, what prevents a user from cheating this system? (eg. taking a picture of the QR and punching at home or with others).

dryicerx··on Dotcom Bubble 2.0: Are we headed for another hangover?

dryicerx··on Ask HN: selling to entreprise, is it possible as a recent graduate?
Yes, I've know a few people who've done it, but I have noticed an interesting pattern.

The more specialized you make your software, the easier it will be to sell to a particular company since you're solving a specific problem for them, but with that the volume you sell it also get smaller.

The trick with enterprise is connections and marketing skills more than the technical aspect.

dryicerx··on Ask HN: Which Linode Datacenter to choose?
Unless you have your user-base or a another web service that you use geographically located nearby, this is a non-issue.
dryicerx··on Ask HN: Best way to operate multiple Gmail accounts
That's a bad idea. For handling multiple accounts (even across multiple domains) in one place cleanly, check out Google Apps.

For your situation, I think one option is to have all those accounts forward to a central account, and have the central account filter the emails in to different labels/folders depending on the destination address.
