drx··on Local Marketplace App Yardsale (YC S11) Launches Nationwide
Because they need to do one thing and do it well. They don't have a 10000 person team to venture into "larger audiences", they do one specific thing or they die.

People don't wake up one day and think "oh hey, I'm in the market for a craigslist alternative, let's look for one". They need to be told that Yardsale exists, and it needs to find a place in their minds. The best way it can do that is to do one thing well.

As for why it's mobile specifically, look for why people do anything on their mobile phones.

> I know people are going to say "what about iOS/Android" but why the hell would you want to write anything on those devices.

Writing on an iPad is very convenient. I would love to transfer as much work as I can on iPads (from laptops).

And replying to your child:

> I was thinking the same thing. Seems like a niche idea that only people with money to burn and nothing better to do would buy into.

Money to burn, really? $10/month for people in an industry where earning $8000/month is the norm? If anything it might be too low.

Would be interesting to see PCA and CA* applied to the same data.

On a quick google trip I found

> I would like to avoid making these mistakes. But how do you avoid mistakes you make by default?

I try to do it by challenging a lot of what I think, almost all the time. It's a solution, although it's very taxing.

(I'd like to say I challenge everything always, but I likely have some blind spots)

drx··on Why I Can't Use PayPal To Buy Your Product
This is clever, but likely an easy way to get perma-banned from PayPal, as they run checks for unusual behavior to detect fraud.

And even if they didn't notice, they will if your account is ever under review.

Wow, really? That's unfortunate that HN can no longer function PR-less.

BTW, would you mind linking to a source, or something? I must have missed it when it happened, would be interesting to read. Thanks in advance.

drx··on Fact based, data-oriented news
This (fact-based news) has been at the back of my mind for a long time.

If you stick with it and it ends up working out, this could be the start of something really interesting.

What are your plans to monetize? It seems that the NPR model works somewhat, but maybe there are other ways.

I worry that the market for nonsensationalized news might be small, but again, you have NPR as an example, so at least there's a niche. Worst case, this could probably work as a hobby, facts are useful in that once you put them on your site, they don't have to be updated much.

Good luck.

Edit: minor point: sources could be clickable.

drx··on Show HN: CircuitLab, an in-browser schematic editor and circuit simulator
Neat stuff.

I briefly considered doing something like this myself, there are some interesting ways to monetize this if you manage to become the web circuit designer/simulator.

Some things you might want to consider:

  * be more Mac friendly -- backspace instead of delete, Cmd instead of Ctrl on Macs
  * It feels unnatural that I have to press a button on the menu to enter a placement mode. Something like drag and drop might be more natural.
  * There's no obvious way to delete stuff with the mouse
Your mileage may vary though, just me 3 cents. Other than that, looking pretty good. Good luck!

If you're hellbanned, other people can't see your comments.

See http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hellbanning and http://www.codinghorror.com/blog/2011/06/suspension-ban-or-h...

drx··on [dead]
On one hand, hellbanning does waste people's time (perhaps even well-intentioned people) and it is regrettable.

On the other hand, pg has no obligation to publish your comments on his website.
