droopyEyelids··on Boeing workers vote to strike
This is obviously true but one of the biggest privileges of management is being able to deny this specific bit of reality
droopyEyelids··on Ask HN: Should I open source my licensing server?
Decades of keygen have taught us that cracking licensing is an irresistible puzzle to some personalities
droopyEyelids··on Exercise to Strengthen Esophageal Sphincter and Eliminate Gastric Reflux (2022)
Because enough of the poster's brain is devoted to thinking about NSFW stuff that it has become one of the main contexts he uses while interpreting new information
droopyEyelids··on Can solar costs keep shrinking?
I'm not endorsing it as a sane idea, but for people who think the idea of living on Mars is cool, living in areas like this could push forward development of compatible technologies- like retaining and recycling all water.

Like right now my mind is trying to imagine a solar powered desiccator and water recollection device that could dehydrate all compost and bodily excretions.

droopyEyelids··on Firewall rules: not as secure as you think
What reasonable company have you worked for before that had such an approach. The only place I could imagine it happening is at a boutique trading firm
droopyEyelids··on We can and should domesticate raccoons
The difference is that other domestic animals do not have wild counterparts with rabies that live in our backyards, constantly trying to socialize and mate with (infect) them.

There is hope though, the feds have been working to eliminate rabies in raccoons for a couple decades now.

droopyEyelids··on We can and should domesticate raccoons
Small parasitic worms are beginning to defeat humanity’s ability to control them.

To use your example, dogs and hookworms. https://todaysveterinarypractice.com/parasitology/drug-resis...

droopyEyelids··on We can and should domesticate raccoons
Ive been fixated on the domesticated raccoon idea since I was a child and the disease reservoir problem is what really killed the fantasy for me.

Roundworms and they’re also a reservoir for rabies. It would be impossible to prevent the domesticated raccoons from interacting with local wild raccoons, so there really isnt anything that can improve the situation.

Its worth noting about 60% of infectious diseases are zoonotic, and every additional domestic species increases the routes existing viruses can take to evolve into infecting humans. https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC8808746/

droopyEyelids··on Our renewal bill for Datadog came to –$83,000/year before we canceled
Its a weird glimpse into DHH’s psychology that he writes such a bombastic take on what is an extremely nuanced decision.

If it has any point, it must be to brag about how elite their ops team is to build and maintain obs infrastructure with less than 1/3 of a headcount. THAT would make for interesting reading.

droopyEyelids··on Looming Liability Machines (LLMs)
the trick is realizing that in a large company, the engineer time is already wasted on the goals of clueless leadership that will change before completion anyway, and then using the RCA to regain a bit of control over your roadmap (as a low level manager)
droopyEyelids··on Tesla has taken down 2016 release noting full self driving hardware capability

droopyEyelids··on Amazon is bricking primary feature on $160 Echo device after 1 year
We’re overloading the term Bricking now?
droopyEyelids··on Companies ground Microsoft Copilot over data governance concerns
It would not be impossible for a LLM to hallucinate a correct answer based on the name of a well named tool that had sane default choices in its architecture
droopyEyelids··on How to build a 50k ton forging press
This has been such a frustrating culture war definitional argument.
droopyEyelids··on Startup CEO Says VC Firm Punished Her for Reporting Sex Assault
What is absurd about it?
droopyEyelids··on How I Use "AI"
The biggest AI skeptics i know are devops/infrastructure engineers.

At this point i believe most of them can not be convinced that LLMs are valuable or useful by any sort of evidence, but if anything could do it, this article could. Well done.

droopyEyelids··on Alexa is in millions of households and Amazon is losing billions
This was exactly my problem with the dash buttons, and with Amazon's recurring order system.

And I'm not certain, but I believe that sellers game this system- you can see certain things that make sense to order on a recurring schedule have unconscionable prices. Once you have a certain threshold of recurring orders, why not increase the price 10x? Especially because Amazon puts so many dark patterns in the way of a user canceling a "subscription".

droopyEyelids··on Why Americans aren't having babies
Mostly agree- Economic reasons are do not _fully_ explain falling birthrates.

I think two of the more uncomfortable reasons that don't get discussed might be:

1. The allure/requirements of the modern lifestyle (both people working then limited leisure time) reduce the 'space' for childrearing

2. Depression, a negative outlook about the future, and awareness of the environmental impacts of more people mean adults consciously abstain from having children.

droopyEyelids··on Modern Luddites: On Being a Digital Minimalist Family in a Tech-Saturated World
I agree with your point. I also dont think recreational drugs are bad.

BUT i dont want my kids using recreational drugs till their prefrontal cortex has matured (or as close to that time as possible)

droopyEyelids··on Private investigator sent to man's house for modifying legally purchased handbag [video]
Louis Rossmann has a successful cult of personality.

His brand is the pinnacle of “righteously angry IT guy who suffers injustice” and a lot of people vibe with it.

droopyEyelids··on Why Steve Jobs Went 'Thermonuclear' over Android (2014)
Many, many executives are bullies and tyrants without shipping anything like what Apple shipped under Jobs.
droopyEyelids··on Study finds juvenile dolphins who play together are more successful as adults
I really roll my eyes at the marine bio dislike of dolphins which seems to boil down to “they do things they know are bad”

Coming from a human, that reeks of someone hating someone else for reflecting their own flaws.

droopyEyelids··on A ChatGPT mistake cost us $10k

droopyEyelids··on Oklahoma Stakes Its Claim to the Tallest Building in the U.S.
You make a great point, and I think in situations like this, it’s an indication you should look for non-economic reasons that the plan is discussed.

Maybe the developer is currying some sort of political favor. Maybe there is some other side reason that is harder to imagine.

Who knows how much bullshit it is, but I saw in some recent discourse that Elon Musk started the hyper loop and boring companies as a way to fight rail expansion. It was never his intention to deliver on the promise of those things, but if they sounded borderline plausible, they could be used to derail train projects.
