drjasonharrison··on NASA’s Mars Sample Return mission is dead
They have suppressed reporting of the deaths and missing from Kyirong Valley and Gyirong Port landslide. Surviving relatives living outside the area would appreciate information but the Chinese Government would prefer that everyone just move along.
drjasonharrison··on Give Smart People the Tools to Do Smart Things
You don't use an LLM to create images, that requires (today) transformer model.

I assume that "AI can write binary" means "AI can use a toolset that results in a binary" because we've already seen GPTs use a combination of LLM and specialized math tools to do the things the original GPTs did.

We could also slow down the motor vehicles to the speeds where drivers can react to pedestrians and cyclists.

And improve education all around for road users, including pedestrians, to widen the understanding of how individual decisions affect the community. For example, starting to cross the road at the end of the crosswalk signal leads to fewer cars able to turn right, which leads to more congestion, etc. Trying to make it across the intersection when traffic is moving slowly and blocking crosswalks and cross traffic. Opening the driver's side door with your opposite hand to look in the side view mirror or blind spot for cyclists.

drjasonharrison··on Artemis II crew see first glimpse of far side of Moon [video]
We call it "dark" because we are sloppy.

The same side of the moon always faces the Earth. If the same side of the Earth always faced the moon, then only one hemisphere would be able to see the moon. Since you can see the moon from everywhere on Earth (not at the same time...), we know that the same side of the Earth does not always face the moon.

Unless you're thinking of the "outside" of the Earth. /s

"far-side of the moon"

There is no dark side.

drjasonharrison··on Ask HN: How to improve being the most senior in your team?
A reading group is one approach. Regular reading of software development blogs, even older ones, will teach you a lot.

Expand your professional network by using local meetups or other professional events to find a mentor.

drjasonharrison··on I found the perfect yearly calendar (for me)
It would be nice if the link to the 2027 calendar included the weekday alignment.
drjasonharrison··on Indifference is a power (2015)
Key phrase "captures some of the sentiment of Stoicism". Her book could be cut down to about ten pages.

If Books Could Kill reviewed her book in April 2025:

"Peter and Michael discuss The Let Them Theory, a self-help guide to seeking bliss through unmitigated complacency."

We call those "change requests"
drjasonharrison··on Workday project at Washington University hits $266M
Its page load time is as if it's running to the first clouds...
drjasonharrison··on Workday project at Washington University hits $266M
I, too, made this assumption. Then I learned it was an actual product my ex-employer had selected and kept using.

It still didn't make sense why an enhancement request and a fix request couldn't be moved between queues. Or why I received three (at least) emails when an issue was closed.

drjasonharrison··on Amazon faces FAA probe after delivery drone snaps internet cable in Texas
Yes but tradeoffs with delivery speed, and thin wires are still hard to detect with limits on vision processing.
drjasonharrison··on Amazon faces FAA probe after delivery drone snaps internet cable in Texas
it's an approximation of dangerous areas, catenary curves are more accurate than straight lines but you don't know the length of the cable so you don't know the droop height.

A cage around the drone, there are kids toys like this, and also commercial products for inspection. Prevents contact with other objects, contact can be sensed and reacted to. https://www.flyability.com/elios-3

Doesn't protect against everything, like Spanish Moss which dangles from trees, but that is a lot bigger than a long thin wire.

I tried googling parts of that and could not find it. Is it online?
drjasonharrison··on DIY NAS: 2026 Edition
One problem I've had running a NAS at home is dust. My usual installation location is my pantry, which is where the network enters my apartment. Unfortunately, it is also the same room as my heat pump, so dust can accumulate.

Integrating a dust filter (not necessarily HEPA, but MERV 11) and the required fan upgrades would be wonderful.

drjasonharrison··on Trump pardons convicted Binance founder
So much of what DJT is doing should be disallowed but isn't. So we can disallow them and then add an amendment to reverse all DJT executive orders and pardons.

I'm joking! Everything will be broken by then.

drjasonharrison··on Electricity can heal wounds three times as fast (2023)
My experience with dry needling was just in and out, no movement laterally or in depth after insertion. I'm sorry you experienced this.
drjasonharrison··on Don't Become a Scientist (1999)
The first copy of this essay captured by the Internet Archive was in October of 2001: https://web.archive.org/web/20011013031756/http://wuphys.wus...

The same timestamp at the bottom of the essay can be found on other pages by Professor Katz, such as his list of publications which includes papers from 2019. I suspect that the timestamp of 1999 is incorrect.

drjasonharrison··on Noise cancelling a fan
This is exactly the physics occuring. Amplitude of sound is pressure. When two signals are 180 degrees out of phase, one is "increases the pressure" while the other "decreases the pressure" of the air.

In an sound editor, the waveforms can be perfectly aligned.

In the physical world, the waveform created by the fan spreads out through space. Providing an opposite but equal sound waveform at your ears is very hard (impossible) with a single speaker but can be done with sound cancelling headphones.

drjasonharrison··on Keeping secrets out of logs (2024)
First "everything":

Logging "everything" could include stack traces and parameter values at every function call. Take the information you can get from a debugger and imagine you log all of it. Would that be necessary to determine why a defect is triggered?

Second, "lazy":

Logging has many useful aspects, but it is also only a step or two above adding print statements to the code, which again leads to the "lazy." If you have the inputs, you should be able to reproduce the execution. The exceptions include "poorly" modularized code, side effects, etc.

Alternatives.

I've found it helpful for complex failures to make sure that I include information about the system. For example, the program couldn't allocate memory: Was it continuous chunks of memory or a memory leak? How much free memory is there, versus the shapes of the free memory (Linux memory slabs)? What can I do to reset this state? (reboot was the only option)

Finally, a quote a colleague shared with me when I once expressed my love of logging. In the context of testing online games:

"Developers seem drawn to Event Recorders like moths to a flame. Recording all game/ mouse/ network/ whatever events while playing the game and playing them back is a bad idea. The problem is that you have an entire team modifying your game's logic and the meaning or structure of internal events on a day-to-day basis. For The Sims Online and other projects, we found that you could only reliably replay an event recording on the same build on which it was recorded. However, the keystone requirement for a testing system is regression: the ability to run the same test across differing builds. Internal Event Recorders just don't cut it as a general-purpose testing system. UI Event Recorders share a similar problem: when the GUI of the game shifts, the recording instantly becomes invalid."
