driminicus··on Wine 5.0
Onlyoffice is getting there, but it is still missing a few features, such as animations.
driminicus··on Synchronous Messaging at Mozilla: The Decision
Congrats to Mozilla and matrix.org! I am at least very happy they went with a FOSS solution.
driminicus··on Facebook Tells Barr It Won’t Open Up Encrypted Messages
I have little desire to decompile every update and/or constantly analyse what their app is doing. They've proven to be untrustworthy on multiple occasions, and haven't given me much reason to think they've changed.

They might convince me if they open their client and server code, but even then they're yet another walled garden only interested in keeping their monopoly by building inferior products and using regularly capture to prevent any competition from doing the same thing they did to MySpace.

driminicus··on Facebook Tells Barr It Won’t Open Up Encrypted Messages
Facebook says in a hn post that the article is wrong, but I have no real reason to trust Facebook, given their track record.
driminicus··on We Need to Dream Bigger Than Bike Lanes
Note that here electric bikes are currently mostly treated like normal bicycles, and don't typically mingle with car traffic.
driminicus··on New Vector raises $8.5M to accelerate dev on Matrix.org
Congratulations to the whole matrix/new vector team!

Next stop, conquer the world!

driminicus··on Firefly III – Self-hosted financial manager
I export transactions from my bank CSV and import it into firefly, which works fine for my usecase.
driminicus··on PHP 5 and 7.0 end of life
PHP 7.0 is eol, not php 7.1, 7.2, and 7.3.
driminicus··on RiotX Beta, a Kotlin Rewrite of the Riot Matrix Client
I recently switched from riot android to riotx, and while it is indeed beta quality in my experience that is more due to some missing features compared with riot android (such as VoIP, searching rooms by name, and sharing files) than the stability and usability. I still have riot android on my phone, but I haven't opened it in a week or so.

If the missing features (that are clearly being worked on and probably will be implemented soon) are not a big deal I would highly recommend to start using riotx!

driminicus··on Matrix 1.0 and the Matrix.org Foundation
Congratulations on this huge milestone!
driminicus··on What can we learn from the matrix.org compromise?
Because the second tine was a dns hijack, not a network compromise. I'm a little fuzzy on the details, but it had something to do with cloudflares API not revoking some access token.

Either way, a DNS hijack is not great, but not nearly as bad as the initial compromise.

driminicus··on Implementing End-To-End Encryption in Matrix Clients
There is a signal bridge [0], but it is a little hacky. I would imagine moxie won't condone an 'official' bridge to matrix, given his stance on federated chat. Also: any realistic (short-term) bridges will have to basically be a man-in-the-middle, breaking the end to end crypto. In the (very?) long term MLS [1] may allow for e2ee through a bridge, but that would probably mean that signal has to explicitly support it. Given the track-record of OWS I personally doubt that would happen, but I'm just a random guy from the internet, so what do I know. I do know that the matrix people are looking at MLS and are willing to implement it in matrix if it finalizes, though they'll currently focus on their own megolm implementation, which is very close to being perfect, from my perspective.

driminicus··on The Dutch Reach: A No-Tech Way to Save Bicyclists’ Lives
I'm Dutch and I basically never use the so called Dutch reach, I use my mirror and look over my shoulder before opening the door. I never doored a cyclist and have no reason to assume I ever will.
driminicus··on The European Union versus the Internet
Facebook and Google are known to track non-users around the internet as well.
driminicus··on Firefox Lockbox
I haven't looked in to it, as I'm not an ios user, but Mozilla would be very stupid if this isn't end to end encrypted. And as far as I know Mozilla typically isn't stupid.
driminicus··on SMS over IRC
I use the one by tijder: https://github.com/tijder/SmsMatrix

It works well enough for me, though I don't use SMS too often though.

What I did like is that I can add another account to a room such that I can monitor texts from both matrix accounts.

driminicus··on SMS over IRC
I bridge SMS to matrix, I currently have no use for slack, but if I were forced to use it I would bridge that to matrix as well.

Of course the matrix IRC bridges are also quite good. I'm in a couple of bridged IRC rooms.

driminicus··on Enter the Matrix – A technical overview and guide to all things Matrix
Fair enough, that's also why I included: "but if there are enough 1:1 conversations to contribute significantly to the overloadedness of matrix.org"

Matrix.org is still running, so no complaints there. You'll figure things out soon enough.

driminicus··on Enter the Matrix – A technical overview and guide to all things Matrix
That's of course true for the massive rooms, such as #matrix:matrix.org, but if there are enough 1:1 conversations to contribute significantly to the overloadedness of matrix.org splitting the servers up and 'randomly' assigning a server to users would decrease the load.

That's a number of 'ifs' there, though.

driminicus··on Ask HN: Is it time to switch your acquaintances to Riot.im?
While I agree that the end to end encryption has quite a few UI/UX issues that can be problematic, I did successfully move my non-techy family to matrix/riot. We're all pretty happy with it. (that is to say, I don't really get complaints and it works quite well.)

It does help that I host the server, so I don't mind talking without end to end encryption with people who can't figure it out.

driminicus··on Convenient End-To-End Encryption for E-Mail
I'd argue matrix.org is a good contender for that space, federated, selfhosted and steadily growing, with megolm for end to end encryption (based on signal axolotl whatever the name is).
driminicus··on As Discord nears 100M users, safety concerns are heard
Start using riot.im it's Foss, and federated (with a very cool end to end encryption I might add).

If you prefer a more classical voice chat use mumble.

driminicus··on Bye Bye Bitcoin Bubble
The same way you short stock. You borrow a bitcoin, promise to give it back, sell the bitcoin for its current price. At a later time you buy a new bitcoin and give it back. If the price dropped you turn a profit, if the price rose you'll have lost money.
driminicus··on Facebook please, don't make another chat app
If we could all move to the matrix.org infrastructure and bridge to any services people don't want to switch from (for whatever reason) I would be so happy.
driminicus··on I cured my tech fatigue by ditching feeds
I selfhost tinytiny-rss. I like it well enough.
driminicus··on Sonos: users must accept new privacy policy or devices may “cease to function”
In this specific case: if you own a sonos, try to get your money back over this.
