dreyfiz··on Happy Holidays from the App Engine team - 1.4.0 SDK released
The pricing power this reveals Google to have is fascinating. On Heroku, which runs on top of EC2, 3 dynos running all the time cost $72 a month. Google is charging $9 for what seems to be the same thing. Is Heroku really charging 8 times as much, or are their dynos not directly comparable to Google's app instances?

dreyfiz··on Where Are the Android Killer Apps?
They also paid for a lot of these ports. Many iPhone devs have mentioned Microsoft approaching them with money and help to get them to port to phone7.
dreyfiz··on Where Are the Android Killer Apps?
Did you see this part at the end, and if so, does that affect your judgement?

> A final thought, regarding Android’s relative weakness as a software platform. iOS’s exclusivity for a bunch of big-name mobile games — Need for Speed Undercover, Star Wars: Battle for Hoth, Monopoly, Tetris, The Sims, Assassin’s Creed — has been broken. Not by Android, where none of these games exist, but by Windows Phone 7, a one-month-old platform.

dreyfiz··on Where Are the Android Killer Apps?
The audience he's been speaking to since August 2002 are.
dreyfiz··on Google Hotpot
That was really insightful. Where's the Temple Grandin[1] of designing web experiences and UIs for Joe Blub? Complaining about not getting a chance to show off what you do is just complaining about your poor understanding of the behavior of the internet herd that's trampling all over your website or app. Stop whining, start designing. See also Luke Wroblewski's ALA article "Sign Up Forms Must Die"[2] from nearly 3 years ago and compare[3].

dreyfiz··on How to Say Nothing in 500 Words
That is interesting. I instinctively use "we" when commenting code or talking myself through performing a novel task, in both cases for the same reason.
dreyfiz··on The day Steve Jobs dissed me hard
Apple isn't your typical BigCo though. Your predictions about the existence of bureaucratic infighting and turf politics ignore Apple's nature. First, Apple is run more like an enormous startup. Second, iOS and OS X share a LOT of engineers. You are arguing that Apple's engineers are at war with themselves. Third, Steve wouldn't stand for it.
dreyfiz··on The day Steve Jobs dissed me hard
At the Back to the Mac event, Tim Cook pointed out that Apple's Mac business, if spun off into its own company, would be #110 on the Fortune 500. The Mac isn't going anywhere.
dreyfiz··on A new way to think about programs
Aha, your answer is more concise, and it addresses FooBarWidget's misapprehension more directly. Yes, "the runtime" is just the browser javascript engine.
dreyfiz··on A new way to think about programs
In practice, this isn't a problem. Coffeescript is more of an alternate syntax for Javascript than a different language. Sure it has some great sugar, but it's really easy to understand how that sugar translates into plain old Javascript. I'll usually have the .js file sitting in the next tab, being compiled live as I write code in the .coffee tab and hit save. Work like this for a little while and you'll learn to recognize which javascript is generated from which coffeescript really efficiently.

  coffee -cw -o js/ coffee/
Plus, your variable names in Coffeescript are well-preserved in the generated JS. Ultimately I find it harder to follow exceptions in my production javascript because of the obfuscation caused by minification (I use yuicompressor), so on my staging and development servers I point to a non-minified .js.

Bottom line: try it, you'll like it!

dreyfiz··on Saving Private Windows
Glad I'm not the only one. I couldn't understand a thing.
dreyfiz··on Resignation letter from Microsoft Employee

dreyfiz··on So I made something that's pretty stupid but had fun doing it
This is awesome, but I wish you would eliminate the hops that consist only of dates because they aren't very interesting.
dreyfiz··on Poll: Are you using SSDs?
Anyone who can afford it and knows about it has an SSD for their boot disk nowadays, including me. I just wish I could get a VPS with SSD storage, then my life would be complete.
dreyfiz··on Ask HN: Want a Hacker Book App?
This is a fantastic idea. Sorry you didn't get more feedback.
dreyfiz··on Steve Jobs explains branding
That was incredibly satisfying, thanks.
dreyfiz··on Steve Jobs explains branding
You would think less of Gandhi and Martin Luther King if they used Macs? I think it says more about the irrationality of your Apple hatred.
dreyfiz··on Ask HN: (No) Microsoft based start-ups?
Plentyoffish too I think.
dreyfiz··on Lorito
Death knell, death schnell. The editorializing in the headline is inappropriate and inaccurate. The open-source community with the strongest testing culture of any programming language is refactoring some well-tested code.

Flagging this to request a headline rewrite.

dreyfiz··on World War II was totally unrealistic
You would be surprised. People who grew up under Soviet education are a lot more cultured and worldly than Americans. Hint: if your worldview is a cartoon, it's probably inadequate to reality.
dreyfiz··on CoffeeScript -- You Are Totally Gonna Hate It
Thanks, I'd somehow missed "is" and "isnt" in the docs!
dreyfiz··on CoffeeScript -- You Are Totally Gonna Hate It
I've been working with coffeescript all evening and I'm loving it. My one suggestion/complaint so far is that you should follow Python more closely in refusing to accept an assignment in conditionals and insisting on comparisons only, because it eliminates a lot of bugs. E.g. if I type

  if x = y
The compiler should raise a syntax error.
dreyfiz··on CoffeeScript -- You Are Totally Gonna Hate It
Excellent! I didn't think reverse translation would an easy problem for javascript, so I wasn't really expecting it.
dreyfiz··on CoffeeScript -- You Are Totally Gonna Hate It
I'm sold. Does it have a translator for all my old js, like sass-convert? And can I set it to watch a directory for changes and recompile if I save a file, like "compass watch"?
dreyfiz··on Android users will surpass iPhone users by end of 2010
I guess you're right. If you're writing about a topic that your audience is also well-informed about, odds are that you're wasting their time regurgitating such factoids as "iPhone only comes in one form factor" and "there are 50 different Android phones". I'm guessing anyone reading VentureBeat knows that, it's not exactly USA Today's audience. It's a plague on the internet, not just with paid bloggers but even people who are writing for their own sites who feel the need to tell you things you already know for paragraphs on end before getting to the point.

In fact, if your headline had included the phrase "AdMob chief says", all the information in the article would be contained in your headline.

Yes, scribd is great now. I used to hate it. I recently Googled the Blueprint CSS cheat sheet and...not bad, Scribd! No Flash!

dreyfiz··on Android users will surpass iPhone users by end of 2010
Why do people insist on writing like this? The first sentence is the only piece of information in this article. The rest is filler, mindless regurgitation for people who just woke up from a 30-year coma combined with random predictions based on nothing.
dreyfiz··on [dead]
My refutation of what he's saying is that it's self-evidently stupid political crap, and partisanship is brain damage. I don't come here for partisan politics. The article's form is a bunch of non-sequitur bullet points weaved together to try to paint a gloomy picture. My complaint about seeing racist websites on Hacker News is a completely independent clause. I even gave it its very own sentence. I have two complaints here, one is about the stupidity, the other is about seeing racist commentators being normalized on Hacker News.

Look, this isn't a courtroom, and I'm not your research assistant. The fact that Taki and Vox Day are racists is well-known to anyone who knows anything about either of them. If you don't believe me then I suggest you Google and do some reading. I'd link to lmgtfy, but I don't want to be insulting. Taki characterizes himself as an anti-semite. Vox Day has an extensive written record of racist writings.

dreyfiz··on [dead]
I beg to differ, but you're welcome to your opinion. Passion can easily resemble axe-grinding. I'm just angry about the following two independent variables:

1. This article was incoherent and stupid, and it's on Hacker News.

2. A racist website was posted on Hacker News.

My time was wasted. I can't get it back, so I'll react instead to make myself feel better.
