drexlspivey··on Navier-Stokes Announcement
> In my opinion, I think the Clay Mathematics Institute deserves some criticism for all the drama surrounding these problems. Mathematicians know that you can make problems arbitrarily complex, and declaring problems with large prizes attached to them can lead to a lot of competition and drama. I feel that mathematics should be free from competitions and the pursuit of glory.

Currently 0/2 Millenium problem solvers claimed the prize money so clearly money is not their motivation for tackling the problem.

drexlspivey··on Situational Awareness and the Impending Stock Market Volatility
The public book went to 0 and LPs lost everything. The 80% number is a result of blending the Anthropic stake (+620% YTD, 25% of NAV) and the public book (-100%, 75% of NAV) = +80% YTD

No way you throw away Blackwell GPUs after just 3 years. Google runs 8 year old TPUs still at 100% utilization. Why would you depreciate them in just 3 years?

drexlspivey··on Netflix to Acquire Warner Bros
Consolidations like this were bound to happen. In the mid 2010s we had a good thing, only one streaming platform with pretty much every movie and tv show. Then every studio got greedy and spawned their own platform, forcing netflix to produce their own shows.

Now you have 20 tv networks all with their own subscription and all losing money.

drexlspivey··on Yann LeCun to depart Meta and launch AI startup focused on 'world models'
But practically speaking, is Meta going to be generating text or video content itself? Are they going to offer some kind of creator tools so you can use it to create video as a user and they need the compute for that? Do they even have a video generation model?

The future is here folks, join us as we build this giant slop machine in order to sell new socks to boomers.

drexlspivey··on Yann LeCun to depart Meta and launch AI startup focused on 'world models'
How do LLMs help with clicks and attention minutes? Why do they spend $100+B a year in AI capex, more than Google and Microsoft that actually rent AI compute to clients? What are they going to do with all that compute? It’s all so confusing

drexlspivey··on Oxy is Cloudflare's Rust-based next generation proxy framework (2023)
Oxy actually means sharp or acidic in greek. Oxygen was wrongly named like that (acid former) because it was thought to be the element to give acids their sourness but later many acids without oxygen were discovered. The key turned out to be hydrogen not oxygen

drexlspivey··on Apple threatens to stop selling iPhones in the EU
The practice as well as the percentage is industry standard by now but i have never heard of anyone complaining about the Meta tax or the Sony tax. It’s always the Apple tax which is a bit weird.
drexlspivey··on Apple threatens to stop selling iPhones in the EU
Let me break it to you, Play store also has a 30% tax. So does Steam, Playstation store, Xbox store, Meta quest store, Nintendo, Samsung etc. Why do people only complain about Apple and everybody else gets a pass?

drexlspivey··on OpenAI and Nvidia announce partnership to deploy 10GW of Nvidia systems
> The bubble is that Nvidia got that money from its crazy high stock price,

This is totally False, NVDA has not done any stock offerings. The money is coming from the ungodly amount of GPUs they are selling. In fact they are doing the opposite, they are buying back their stock because they have more money that they know what to do with.

drexlspivey··on Apple: SSH and FileVault
I use it as a plex server and it can handle anything you throw at it. Previously plex was running on the synology NAS itself and it would choke with a couple concurrent transcodes
drexlspivey··on Robert Redford has died
These are great but day of the jackal is more of a police procedural than a spy thriller.

There is a whole sub-genre called Paranoid thrillers of the 70s. Some more:

- Marathon Man

- Klute

- All the president’s men

- The Parallax View

- The China Syndrome

- Capricorn One

- The Boys from Brazil

- Z

- Blow Out

drexlspivey··on OpenAI Grove
OpenAI definitely doesn’t have more money than it can invest. They burn cash like crazy that’s why they keep raising money every 6 months.
