drewrv··on What you can't say (2004)
The woman who called them out also got fired. And swarmed with rape/death threats too.
drewrv··on Interstellar Visitor Found to Be Unlike a Comet or an Asteroid
The odds that the first extra-solar object found is close to earth is really high, because they're easier to see if they're close.
drewrv··on Why Half a Degree of Global Warming Is a Big Deal
A metric I've thought about is, how much extra energy is circulating in earths systems per degree of temp change? 2 degrees does not sound like a lot but when you think of how vast the earth is that's a lot of extra energy in the oceans and atmosphere. It would be an interesting metric to track.
drewrv··on Upgrading GitHub from Rails 3.2 to 5.2
One of the other big advantages to static typing is better tooling and in that respect C# really shines.
drewrv··on On banning racial terms in programming
> Many places are named after famous slaves that successfully fleed their master.

This is great for La Réunion, but many places in the US are named for slaveholders, or even generals who fought to preserve institutionalized slavery. There are monuments to these monsters all over and people still proudly display their traitorous flag. We're touchy about this subject for good reason.

drewrv··on Federal chokehold on marijuana stymies studies on epilepsy, autism
I don't know about other legal states but here in Washington the purity, composition, and dose of cannabis products are highly regulated and come with standardized labels.
drewrv··on The Story of Why I Left Riot Games
Estimates put the number of women who have survived sexual assault as high as 1 in 6, so it's likely there are survivors in your workplace. It sits in a grim area of being a serious crime and quite common.
drewrv··on Cigarette butts are the single greatest source of ocean trash
I think it would be even simpler to mandate cigarette filters are biodegradable, made from cotton or something.
drewrv··on Elizabeth Warren unveils bold new plan to reshape American capitalism
She's a senator in the minority party, there's not much she can do beyond throwing ideas out there. She did accomplish quite a bit in the Obama years.
drewrv··on The Mopeds Are Coming
I've commuted on both and feel safer on a Vespa too, but realized that led me to more dangerous behavior. For example, taking busier roads, riding when it's dark and rainy, etc.
drewrv··on The Mopeds Are Coming
I don't know how it applies to electric bikes, but in most states you're ok if the engine is < 50cc.
drewrv··on Potato paradox
Helps to think about it like this: if you averaged 60 MPH on a two mile drive, your trip would last two minutes. Since your first mile was driven at 30 MPH you've already been driving for exactly two minutes. The only way to hit an average of 60 MPH for the whole trip is if the second mile is instantaneous.
drewrv··on Alcubierre drive
Season 7 episode 9 (Force of Nature). I believe in Voyager they mentioned something about a new warp engine design that mitigated the problem.
drewrv··on Tesla Second Quarter 2018 Update
Most likely they’re just killing people in smaller cars, deaths from car crashes are higher in the US compared to other developed countries after all. Americans seem to enjoy a good arms race.
drewrv··on Before Present
I thought that was the most interesting part of the article. Anyone know where I can learn more about how unreliable it makes carbon dating and what far future civilizations will be able to learn about when/how our civilization lived?
drewrv··on Grand Jury Indicts Russian Officers for Hacking Related to the 2016 Election
Meetings between high level Trump campaign officials and Russia are public knowledge.

drewrv··on Interrobang
Why can't we just use two punctuation marks?!
drewrv··on We're All Subsidizing People Who Use American Express
I've always assumed cash-only businesses are up to something mildly shady, like tax evasion (local example, Paseo).

Also, I've encountered a couple card-only businesses lately (local example, Optimism Brewing).

drewrv··on Tesla produce 7000 cars in seven days
If you think there's 50/50 odds they'll either go bankrupt or be twice as big as GM/Ford some day, it's reasonable for their valuation to be on par with those guys (I don't think that btw, just trying to make sense of it).
drewrv··on [dead]
I think there's a disagreement in the US about the severity of crossing the border illegally. Some people consider it a minor offense like jaywalking or driving 5mph over the speed limit, while others believe it's more akin to theft or murder.
drewrv··on For more and more people, work appears to serve no purpose
The book goes into it a bit. Some of it is status (i.e. people wanting others working under them, even if it's pointless work), other times it's to claim they care about something even if they don't (imagine a company that pretends to care about their employees wellness, they could hire a wellness consultant and ignore the recommendations).
drewrv··on Report of Active Shooter at YouTube HQ
Our government has regulations and conducts research to minimize car accident fatalities. As a result, cars today are much safer than 10 or 20 years ago. There's no reason we can't do something similar with guns.
drewrv··on Report of Active Shooter at YouTube HQ
So does every location in the country need to have armed people around? There can be no "soft targets" anywhere?

There is a better way, other countries have figured it out already.

drewrv··on Things Many People Find Too Obvious to Have Told You Already
I've been spending a lot of time lately wondering if people who treat colleges and universities as though their job is worker training are confused, or if I'm naive in believing colleges and universities exist to expand human knowledge through research and education.

I suspect the answer is that our culture is confused, we want people who are smart and well rounded to also be useful. And the ugly side of it is, we want clear class divisions. One would never refer to law school or medical school as "vocational".

> Everyone in Silicon Valley uses equity, and not debt, to fuel their growth because debt is not available in sufficient quantities to poorly capitalized companies without a strong history of adequate cash flows to service debt.

A corollary to this is that if you're fundraising and can get debt, you should take it over equity almost every time. Many founders are skeptical of debt because everyone takes equity, yet everyone takes equity because it's all they can get.

At the very least, if you're seriously trying to decide between the two, remember that equity investors want at least a 10x return within about five years. Break out a calculator and look at what the interest rate on that would be (spoilers, it's higher than any lender would think to ask).

drewrv··on Ask HN: If you had to build Facebook from scratch, what stack would you use?
If the question is about handling their scale, then I would suggest you avoid premature optimization and worry about more immediate problems.

If the question is about their features, I think most modern frameworks will be able to handle it all just fine. Use what you know best, so you'll start on solid footing and be able to roll out features faster.

Personally, I'm about equally proficient at ASP.NET and Django. I'd probably go with Django on this one because the Django Admin would let me put off building sophisticated moderation tools at first.

drewrv··on Ask HN: What is your weirdest secret YouTube addiction?
My kids are into her and I like it enough to watch with them sometimes. At first I rolled my eyes (mostly at the baby talk), after a few videos I was impressed. Now having watched dozens of them, I'm really amazed at her combination of creativity, artistic skills, attention to detail, and the massive amount of labor she must put into everything from test recipes to social media marketing. I barely cook and am uninterested in pop-culture but she is weirdly an inspiration to me.
drewrv··on Chances of E.T. Living Subsurface Ocean of Enceladus Given Major Boost
It would only be a wash if you currently believe the chance of developing intelligence is > 50%. To me, the fact that intelligence is rare on earth makes me think the odds of developing intelligence elsewhere is rare too.
drewrv··on Chances of E.T. Living Subsurface Ocean of Enceladus Given Major Boost
If alien life were discovered within our solar system, I wonder what the implications for the Drake Equation would be. Assuming panspermia is ruled out, the fact that abiogenesis occured twice within a seemingly ordinary system would imply life is incredibly common.
drewrv··on I'm a little sad that the Martian wasn't popular,I guess it's a niche readership
I love reminders like this that "overnight success" is basically non-existent.
