From today on HN.

drewcon··on Coal and fossil fuel use in Germany at a record low for electricity in 2023
Yeah I have the same question.

My understanding is they had to bring more coal online to offset shutting down nuclear. What gives?

drewcon··on Let me repeat that back to you
I try this with my young kids with mixed results. They seem to have instant amnesia.
drewcon··on EPA orders packaging firm Inhance to stop making PFAS
Was great to wake up to and learn we had PFAS air dropped on us.
drewcon··on Tinnitus linked to undetected auditory nerve damage
Same exact story here.

Happened when I was 17 at a concert. Too loud. Brain seemed to just stuff it away and emotionally I was fine (because I was young and dumb).

“Came back” when I was in early 30s and devastated me for about 3-5 months with anxiety and insomnia. I used CBT to basically ignore it and my brain did its thing pushing it to the background and lowering the volume.

Came back again at age 40…same deal (but not nearly as bad since I’d seen the movie before) and lo and behold…brain stuffed it away again.

Now I just accept that it’s a part of life. Will come back probably and I’ll deal with it.

drewcon··on The world is designed against the elderly, writes Don Norman
“Perceived affordance” is the term I believe.
drewcon··on Microsoft Discussed Selling Bing to Apple as Google Replacement
Apple should rebrand it as “Ask Jobs”
drewcon··on How Accurate Were EPAs Predictions of climate change from 40 years ago?
This is the equivalent of arguing that we instead invented sanitation to adapt to reality instead of sitting in our own shit and dying of cholera and opining about sanitation refugees.
drewcon··on How Accurate Were EPAs Predictions of climate change from 40 years ago?
As human being have been doing since the dawn of history.
drewcon··on How Accurate Were EPAs Predictions of climate change from 40 years ago?
I don’t know where you (or your nephew are) but you’re tremendously underplaying the human races ability to simply adapt.
drewcon··on New study finds microplastics infiltrate all systems of body, alter behaviour
Good thing you’re not a mouse.

Citation needed.

These comments read like Reddit/TikTok. Lots of frantic fearful hand waving, not a lot of evidence presented.

drewcon··on Loneliness is stronger when not alone
I absolutely love going to the movies alone.

One of life’s great gifts.

drewcon··on Covid-19 vaccination-related myocarditis: A Korean nationwide study
Some people are dead because of anything.

Alone that is an entirely unuseful realization.

We need adjusted hazard ratios to make rational comparisons.

drewcon··on Health officials delayed report linking fluoride to brain harm
Or, hear me out, watching terrorists kamikaze a few commercial airliners into a couple of buildings in downtown Manhattan and the Pentagon live on TV was actually kind of a nerve racking on its own irrespective of what the dissolved minerals in our tap water might have told us.
drewcon··on Regent – Electric coastal travel
Setup Boston to Nantucket…and just print money.
drewcon··on Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs
Seems like they’re underpaid :)
drewcon··on Googlers angry about CEO’s $226M pay after cuts in perks and 12,000 layoffs
CEO pay is a market rate. This is not much different than complaining about the price point of gas, or milk, or eggs.

You can describe it as being too high in your opinion, or not worth it in your opinion, but that's completely different than pretending that its not being set by the market (and approved by the board) weighing myriad inputs. And btw, one of those inputs is...the ability to successfully tighten the belt and restructure costs to hit numbers.

Make the case to fire Pichai if you want, I'm fine with that, but recognize that you're going to pay "replacement cost" at the same rate or higher for someone else. That's showbiz baby.

drewcon··on The age of average
Isn’t this just…Darwinism?

We could say the same thing about biological convergence in animals.

The average vertebrate animal…

Two eyes, two ears, one mouth, one brain, two sexes, five digits, moving around on appendages.

It converges because it works.

drewcon··on National Academies: We can’t define “race,” so stop using it in science
I’m not sure that’s accurate.
drewcon··on National Academies: We can’t define “race,” so stop using it in science
I defy you to describe race in certain terms.
drewcon··on Hundreds of changes made to latest editions of Roald Dahl's books
Sad. Truly.
drewcon··on Fecal indicator bacteria on indoor NYC floors linked to sidewalk contamination
Is there any actual evidence that contamination travels to any meaningful degree? Hasn’t seemed to have any impact that I know of.
drewcon··on Google employees criticize CEO for “dumpster fire” response to ChatGPT
It’s doesn’t. Stay in target.

I responded to ChatGPT being NFTs and chatbots all over again.

drewcon··on Google employees criticize CEO for “dumpster fire” response to ChatGPT
I have zero issue with this.
drewcon··on It’s not aliens. It’ll probably never be aliens. So stop. Please just stop
Not the giant Chinese balloon. There is no disagreement about that. The other 3.
drewcon··on It’s not aliens. It’ll probably never be aliens. So stop. Please just stop
My current theory (other than nefarious state actors) is that it’s somehow just industrial inflatable gas storage devices that got filled with lighter than air gas and took off.

drewcon··on Google employees criticize CEO for “dumpster fire” response to ChatGPT
I’m surprised no one has connected ChatGPT to a voice interface?

The way it holds conversational context is really leaps and bounds better than Alexa/Siri
