You should also try use AARRC.info . It is a full-fledged web service with multiple access techniques to flagship academic papers (Elsevier, IEEE, etc) using a solid browser extension. It is also a free service.
drethemadrapper··on Why Write in English?
I am a globetrotter and now in France working at a tertiary institution. I learnt french only for a few months, when I was younger (elementary school) as it was one of the compulsory languages to learn. Overtime, I lost it. On getting here, I tried to pick it up but was very intimidated. To add insult to injury, they don't want to hear me speak the phonetic/queen's English Lang. It is even not understood by them; hence, I speak the basics (most times grammatically wrong). They tend to speak English but the conveyed message is often confusing let alone torturing to me. I often cry and on many occasions, I think there is a systemic racial profiling going on here given that I am dark skin. I appreciate them picking an additional language and improving their skills via me, yet I am intimidated by not allowing me speak their language but must communicate in English. The whole experience seemed to be a new-age skills transfer - French<-English. They are using folks from the 2nd/3rd world as the 1st world folks cannot stand the harassment - they would have left the job.

An interesting observation is that my thinking changes as I learn/improve on the French Lang. I sometimes think the English folks could have been more picky all the while i.e. the systemic racism is higher with them. I tend to see the culture in French - love/friendship even I have my reservations (history has shown that they could be dangerous - colonialism). I see the hidden traits in French (Lang.), which is fearlessness/aggressiveness and English,\ (Lang.) which is respectfulness with a possibility of deception in it.

drethemadrapper··on Why Are So Many Animals Homosexual?
This is highly incorrect. Unless animals are genetically modified, they cannot ever think of being gay! It is the act of science that makes it possible. Nature won't.
drethemadrapper··on Sci-Hub: Removing barriers in the way of science
There is another service in the pipeline. I came across it very recently; it is in a public-beta phase. It appears to focus on providing access to all digital libraries and specifically serving the third-world or developing countries, mostly in Africa. It has got a different (business) model and uses some advanced technologies for provisions of the articles. Given that they intend subscribing to the publishers, there is no doubt that they will remain in business for as long as the publishers themselves exist.

The projects like sci-hub.io, library.no and libgen are highly commendable. It is no news that the third-world countries are destabilized by war, economic sanctions, e.t.c. perpetuated by the world powers thereby making them re-prioritize (access to) their resources. And it is not surprising that webrtc/p2p related services are often times blocked in the first world institutions with access to articles from those digital libraries. Such technologies/protocols/tools are defined/shaped (at standardization meetings - IETF, W3C, e.t.c.) by big corporations in order to preserve their own product offerings.

drethemadrapper··on Ask HN: Australian freelancers, how're you doing?
@Danieltrembath: Sounds like you work (@leisure) with the Hackerspace in Hawthorn. I used to come there before I moved to Perth.

@All: Perth is quite dull for IT jobs. I only get calls from Melbourne/Sydney, most notably from the Progressive People recruiter. I am desperately looking for an opportunity in AU. I am happy to test waters in the other states. Fortunately, I am an OSS guy (anti-MS). I do a lot of web engineering works - browser extension dev., JS-based app/SPAs, OTT services (Telecom over the web) and so on.

drethemadrapper··on Fedora 23 Released
I have always preferred and used Fedora over other linux distros. But the non-availability of Fedora LTS as resulted in a continuous upgrade of my machines, which is daunting.

I have now chosen the RH/Fedora variant CentOS for all my machines - desktop, server,e.t.c.

drethemadrapper··on Phobias may be memories passed down in genes from ancestors
Teachers, such as the Zen and Budda masters, always say it is a sign of reincarnation i.e. a person, who has a phobia, say for flying on an airplane, might have died from a plane crash in their past life.
drethemadrapper··on Boredom is not a problem to be solved, it's the privilege of a free mind
Boredom is when your person wants to speak to you but the you is not conscious to notice it. In others, you just can't hear yourself for you don't know what it is speaking to you. In the same way, you don't know what to do next as a machine that works on motivation.

That's when you should reach out to Alan Watts, George Carlin,e.t.c. if they could help you.

drethemadrapper··on WebExtensions FAQ
They (Moz. dev team) have now even gone wild by hiding the Addon SDK from developers. It's not on their servers but buried in github, covered by several versions of a new app./development tool. It took me a long time to locate it. It all appears that they don't want us to use it (perhaps because of the cfx they are deprecating for jpm). Yet, a developer needs it to upgrade or develop their (new) extensions ( xul->bootstrapped extension with/without the sdk lib.). On another note, extension development is now like a node app. dev. -- their directory structures now look like. It's funny yet interesting (standardizing addon dev.??).... This whole gospel about the SDK is a way of hiding the details/core of the FF browser from developers - ending the use of XUL/XPCOM, going HTML, e.t.c. Perhaps, Moz. needs to help make extension dev. easy for 'web designers'.
drethemadrapper··on TypeScript vs. Haxe
Could you share more information about writing gulp (+plugins) in Haxe?

I can't wait to learn it.

drethemadrapper··on Lightbeam for Firefox – Shine a Light on Who’s Watching You
I disabled this plug-in months ago because I was not too interested in who is watching me (of which I know - google analytics, facebook, and most importantly the NSA). I was rather more interested in blocking their APIs, scripts, e.t.c. Hence, I began to use reactive mechanisms - plugins like HTTPS Everywhere, Privacy Badger, RefControl and Ghostery. I know they are intertwined (i.e. some doing the same work). But I prefer that approach to a listing or graphical visualization of who watches me (with little of no (re)action).
drethemadrapper··on Why I Had to Buy My Wife's Inhaler on the Dark Web
WHat an informative write-up to get a layman started with darknet. It is also reassuring that people could trust it to some extent.

We live in a world that is turned upside down \o/. The good way is just the bad way turned inside out. As it is above; so it is below!

drethemadrapper··on Gmail.. Of all Mailservers
Everything is fine with my infrastructure - network (active dir.) & PC time, e.t.c.. It might have in a different geographic area to the Google servers/CDNs though. One would never have expected this kind of weird error/notification with Google services. I am thinking many other users will be encountering such frustration.
drethemadrapper··on Revisiting how we build Firefox
I can't agree more. Where does this plan leave desktop app dev. with Mozilla technologies? There are tonnes of projects (desktop apps) using XUL, XPCOM, e.t.c. SUre, the future is the Web (like Web OS, Unity, i.e. UI in HTML). Why can't they improve on XUL/XBL by releasing a new version with the desired features while they try to simplify building extensions/apps with XPCOMs? They should standardize apps dev. for FFOS (gonk{+necko}/gecko/gaia) & FF(gecko+necko/xul). This effort does not necessarily mean spending much time on enhancing the UI for FF but rather ensuring seamless app. portability between FF and FFOS.
drethemadrapper··on Ask HN: Where to switch from Gmail?
It is always exciting to see more people leave the NSA bobby traps to reclaim their privacies.

You may want to try https://www.hosteurope.de/E-Mail-Hosting/#Vergleich

It's in Germany. I am not in full support of services in the US. I however understand that there is not guarantee that they/NSA/BB can't get an order/subpoena to access your server though.

Here are the product details: Mailboxes: 1 Storage per mailbox: 5 GB Webmailer Pro: Yes POP / IMAP: Yes Daily backup: Yes Mobile Sync: Yes Shareable calendars, address books and tasks: Yes One-time setup fee: € 9.99 € 4.99

You can get up to 5 mailboxes by paying $5-$10 more I think.

drethemadrapper··on Show HN: Manage passwords with GPG
I was going to try use one of these solutions, when I read on the EFF that they all provide a single point of failure.

If anyone gets hold of your master key/pwd, they would have access to all your usernames & pwds.

Best to keep them separate - in your brain!

drethemadrapper··on Skype for web now available worldwide, don’t need to install app anymore
No, it is not for the web if it still requires a plug-in in this era of Webrtc, which is aimed at eliminating the use of plug-ins, at least the prevalent media plug-ins.

The Skype app perhaps needs to be re-engineered/overhauled. Why would it still need another app to be installed on an OS? We could forgive MS that it only runs on the Chrome browser at the moment but can't they implement their centralized architecture of the app to run only on the web? The app used to be some sort of P2P before now.

drethemadrapper··on Academic publishers reap huge profits as libraries go broke
The market is rapidly changing even though the household names in the publishing business have changed their profit-making strategies too. They now ask authors to pay an author's fee in order to make their articles available to the public - Open Access. I am seeing a research platform like the researchgate.net also impacting their profit-making mechanisms as time goes by.

drethemadrapper··on Why I faked being black for med school
And Australia. Well, one should not be astonished about Oz if her govt would even demolish the homes of her first nation people or Aboriginals. How much more the Africans that look like them! Oz men and women stare at blacks in general like where in the world do people look like these AND won't this animal harm me.
drethemadrapper··on 84-Year-Old Volunteer Rebuilds and Sends Linux Laptops to Africa
I keep seeing people making this wrong assumption that an Android device makes a linux-ish device.

Android is a component-based linux. It can't play the role of a full-fledged OS that the diff. flavours of linux play.

drethemadrapper··on Why people hate PHP, a book from hell
Thanks asmicom; I don't think I should be downvoted for expressing myself. That was my opinion. And I was also seeking comments from readers. @erikb: There is a school of thought those apps - FB, wordpress, etc - don't contain lines of code with best practices. I am however glad they are released on non-restrictive licenses and the general public are contributing to the various projects.

All I can say is that PHP is here to stay. I have not written a whole app/project in PHP5 before but with PHP4. I however think kits/tools like Haxe AND apps like FB & WP will keep PHP in the market for a very long time.

drethemadrapper··on The future of the postdoc
I am perplexed by the so-called postgraduate studies and their reward systems. I completed my PhD (in my last 20s) in a second world country about few years ago and continued working as a faculty at a neighbouring university in the same country. I pulled out (or technically resigned) as a senior lecturer, when I couldn't endure being bullied any longer by my senior academics, who had only earned their "DTech" in their 50+ yrs of age.

I am now working with a pretty new institution in a first world country and will be starting a Postdoc soon. Taking a look at the salary for the Postdoc, it's like I am back to the same rat race as a PhD student years ago. And I now have a family! The new job, though a permanent position, isn't a full-time; so, all employees are advised to look elsewhere. All effort to get into the industry proved abortive; and I saw that a number of my folks in the industry are earning 10-20k more than me (i.e. senior dev. vs senior faculty). Yet they don't have those fanciful postgraduate degrees.

The postdoc opportunity, as for now, seems to be an avenue to get into a top-tier or well-established institution in the first world country though. The long and the short of it is that academics don't get rewarded like their peers in the industry. In addition, postdoc offers are just another way of being a student - call it a professional student. But I will console myself be calling it a consultant. The postdoc offer isn't that bad compared to others that I had. It includes travelling to another first world country for a year or more to complete the other part of my research.
