dreary_dugong··on CLUI: Building a Graphical Command Line (2020)
Great to see the progress on this. It seems my fears have been assuaged and the CLUI keeps all the power of a command prompt while adding discoverability. I still think the average user will stop reading the drop-downs after awhile and just treat it like a normal command prompt once they've memorized everything, but up until that point this seems like a better way to get newbies to learn than telling them to read the man pages. That said, I do still think it's unfair to say that this is equally as approachable and a GUI for the average person. Certainly it's better than a standard CLI, but it's more of an in-between I think.
dreary_dugong··on How can you not be romantic about programming? (2020)
``I think that it's extraordinarily important that we in computer science keep fun in computing. When it started out, it was an awful lot of fun. Of course, the paying customers got shafted every now and then, and after a while we began to take their complaints seriously. We began to feel as if we really were responsible for the successful, error-free perfect use of these machines. I don't think we are. I think we're responsible for stretching them, setting them off in new directions, and keeping fun in the house. I hope the field of computer science never loses its sense of fun. Above all, I hope we don't become missionaries. Don't feel as if you're Bible salesmen. The world has too many of those already. What you know about computing other people will learn. Don't feel as if the key to successful computing is only in your hands. What's in your hands, I think and hope, is intelligence: the ability to see the machine as more than when you were first led up to it, that you can make it more.''

dreary_dugong··on Teach Yourself Computer Science
To be fair, this isn't "teach yourself the skills necessary to be successful in a development job," it's "teach yourself computer science."
dreary_dugong··on Easily rename your Git default branch from master to main
While there was almost certainly no original malintent with the phrase 'master' in this context, it's a very small and relatively easy change to make to avoid hiccups down the road. Even if you don't agree that this is needed, I think it's clear that it's easier to just rename it now than it would be to explain to someone a few months down the road the deep historical context for why this should not offend them.
dreary_dugong··on The governor of NJ went live on TV to request COBOL programmers
I recommend taking a look at the other discussions linked. Unfortunately the situation is more nuanced then "just pay them more."
dreary_dugong··on Twenty-one year old with no pre-existing conditions dies from Coronavirus
I'd argue that Occam's razor would state that this article is inaccurate rather than the plethora of sources about age and pre-existing conditions.
dreary_dugong··on Activists create a 12.5M block library in Minecraft to bypass censorship
It depends. In most cases it's definitely one by one, but external tools do exist. Tools like World Painter, MCedit, and the server side mod World Edit especially are used in large scale projects.

It's important to note that this will not easily benefit the people of China. China has its own edition of Minecraft which is not compatible with servers running the mainstream edition.

dreary_dugong··on The Uncensored Library
It's worth noting that this project will likely not benefit the people of China. A somewhat obscure fact is that China has its own edition of Minecraft which cannot connect to servers of the mainstream edition.

dreary_dugong··on CLUI: Building a Graphical Command Line
While I agree wholeheartedly with the stated goals, I do worry that the CLUI isn't quite as perfect s solution as it's implied to be. The CLUI is listed as having all of the upsides of both GUI and CLI but none of the downsides of either, but I feel it's more like halfway on everything. It's /more/ approachable than a CLI, but still /less/ approachable than a GUI and this goes for most of the categories listed. It's still an interesting idea but it strikes me as a bit risky. At what point does less approachable become too unapproachable? I fear CLUI may have accidentally gained many of the downsides at the same time as mere pieces of the upsides
dreary_dugong··on Plasma 5.18
Been using KDE for a few years now and I've always been impressed with the experience. I'm really looking forward to this update, for me night mode is critical. (I understand there were third party solutions but I often found them to be buggy or otherwise difficult to use). Here's hoping my distro adds the update to its repositories soon.
dreary_dugong··on Why did we wait so long for the cotton gin? (2017)
Slightly tangential, but I've always wondered something similar: why did we wait so long for the printing press? The technology is essentially the same as coin pressing, which has existed for much longer.
dreary_dugong··on Interactive Vim Tutorial
A great concept but frustratingly quick-paced. With each lesson I feel like I need at extra 5-10 minutes of practice before I move on but it forces me to after only a few seconds.
dreary_dugong··on When good ideas make bad business
As stated in a thread above, while it is not directly profitable for drug companies to cure diseases, it is profitable for their insurance agency cohorts. The current system does not totally dis-incentivize cures.
dreary_dugong··on UK drops plans for online pornography age verification system
It originates from sexually transmitted infections. When the catholic church heavily encouraged abstinence suddenly people stopped dying from STI's as much. A combination of the church's influence on Western culture during that time period and all opposition dying out led to its ubiquity and it has stuck around as part of traditional moral values. The more Western culture has taken over the rest of the world, the more it's spread.
dreary_dugong··on Elevating original reporting in Search
Interesting. When I Google just the word "debate" I get an opinion piece from Fox as the second result.
dreary_dugong··on What's Coming in Python 3.8
It fits in a single indent space. At least that's what my professor told us, and it seems to be confirmed by a quick online search.
