dreamlayers··on JPEG XL
Lossless JPEG transcoding making images 20% smaller is nice, though you can already losslessly shrink many JPEG files by up to 10% by using https://github.com/tjko/jpegoptim/ and making them interlaced.
dreamlayers··on Perverse Downstream Consequences of Debunking
For the person doing it, sharing of such news can be more like the person expressing their own emotions than like sharing information. If that expression gets invalidated, the motivation to express those emotions remains.
dreamlayers··on Thinkpad X230 with “e-Ink” display at 30fps [video]
The first video iPod has a colour transflective LCD. Why aren't there more colour displays like that?
dreamlayers··on Autopilot crashes into median in daylight
Those shadows are confusing.
dreamlayers··on An interactive review of the Oklab perceptual color space
CIELAB colours seem wrong in many gradients.
dreamlayers··on Watch this Tesla Model 3 go from SF to LA on FSD Beta with zero interventions
What does this actually feel like for a driver?

I imagine that spending hours letting the car drive itself while only making sure the car doesn't do something stupid might be less enjoyable than driving for hours.

dreamlayers··on New Linux port for the Nintendo 64
I can run X in 4 MB on a VAXstation 2000 in Ultrix or Athena-4.3BSD. But a usable Linux 5.10 system in 4 or even 8 MB? That's what I find hard to believe.
dreamlayers··on A floppy-disk Walkman using a Raspberry Pi
I'm disappointed; I thought it would involve storing audio in analog format on a floppy disk.
dreamlayers··on Caffeine: A vitamin-like nutrient, or adaptogen
Is this reasonably balanced?

I'm sure there have been a huge amount of studies of caffeine, and maybe they're favouring those which make caffeine look good.

dreamlayers··on YouTube tightens rules after David Icke 5G interview
If some speech is suppressed everywhere, how can one know that it's false?
dreamlayers··on WD Passport 4TB drives don't support WRITE SAME command
Probably the USB interface keeps some data for its encryption function on a part of the hard drive which it makes inaccessible. You erased the whole hard drive, including that part, and probably caused the USB interface to malfunction.
dreamlayers··on Compaq and Coronavirus
Seems to me like Taiwan reacted to an emergency as soon as information was available, while Western countries ignored the emergency until things got so bad they couldn't be ignored anymore.
dreamlayers··on Abe, IOC agree to delay Tokyo Olympics by one year
Others cancelled what was supposed to be happening now. The Olympics were still in the future. It seemed reasonable to wait until there is sufficient evidence that things won't be back to normal by then.
dreamlayers··on OneWeb successfully launches 34 more satellites into orbit
On Saturday March 21st I was at the tip of Canada's Point Pelee National Park, approximately 41.909055, -82.509154. At 9:12 EDT (1:12 AM UTC on the next day), I saw a an approximate disordered line of satellites passing above Orion. They were all going at the same speed and in a very similar direction, west to east close to parallel with the belt of Orion. But they were all on slightly different almost parallel tracks. The spacing was more regular, though also a bit irregular.
dreamlayers··on Ancient Roman Valves (2013)
Aqueducts are the whole long structure bringing water to a settlement, including bridges, tunnels and channels along the ground.
dreamlayers··on Apollo 11 Guidance Computer vs. USB-C Chargers
I find it a bit a bit scary that a microcontroller controls charger voltage. There might be a risk of power glitches or bugs causing output voltages which destroy devices.
dreamlayers··on Reading a VGA monitor's configuration data with I2C and a PocketBeagle
Cutting a cable and going through all this effort is stupid when you can probably get the data using your graphics card.
dreamlayers··on The scientific reason you don’t like LED bulbs – and the simple way to fix them
Yeah. The best example was lighting all my clothes with LED lights. Colours seem obviously messed up. Some colours are emphasized while others are suppressed.
dreamlayers··on The scientific reason you don’t like LED bulbs – and the simple way to fix them
Many rear car LED lights flicker because their full brightness is used as brake lights, and they are dimmed via pulse width modulation for normal lighting. This is simply a bit cheaper, which is ridiculous on an expensive car.

I don't actually see the flicker normally, but when they quickly move accross my visual field I sometimes see a line of dots from the flicker.

dreamlayers··on Apple Removes Apps from China Store That Help Internet Users Evade Censorship
The market is not "too large to leave". The company is making a choice to stay there because to them profit is more important than ethical considerations.

At the same time, the fact that the West generally doesn't care about ethics shows that the West is not necessarily a good model to follow. Maybe China has a better alternative.

dreamlayers··on Twitter allegedly deleting negative tweets about United Airlines incident
What is needed is some kind of distributed infrastructure like Usenet, which is not owned or controlled by any one entity.
dreamlayers··on 3D support for X11 guests
Trolling people in an attempt to get their lawn mowed by others.
dreamlayers··on Tunnel TCP Through WebSockets (CLI Tool)
This is just one TCP connection though, not like a connection to the Internet which you can use to make various TCP connections.

You can pass PPP or SLIP via WebSockets and connect to the Internet that way. That's already used for connecting DOSBox running in a web browser to the Internet: http://blog.vrcade.io/2017/03/setting-up-a-visp-using-pppow/

dreamlayers··on Is Consciousness an Illusion?
The question is incredibly ridiculous. Consciousness is the most first-hand evidence we have. Everything is experienced via consciousness. You could ask if neurons are illusions, or if matter and energy are illusions, but it's ridiculous to ask if consciousness is an illusion.
dreamlayers··on Support for better symlink handling in Windows 10
The problem before was that the symlink creation privilege gets removed by UAC. So, if you gave the privilege to a non-admin user they could use it, but an admin user would always require UAC elevation to create symlinks. https://stackoverflow.com/questions/15320550/why-is-secreate...
dreamlayers··on Plain Text Offenders
Some accounts aren't really important, and then I don't care if they e-mail me my password or if I reuse passwords.
dreamlayers··on Why We're Living in the Age of Fear
There might be some kind of homoeostasis for anxiety. If you're not facing serious threats, anxiety gets amplified, and if you're facing serious threats it gets reduced, so it doesn't vary too much. It would be similar to how some say there is a happiness set-point.
dreamlayers··on The ELM701 is a low-power chip for creating mouse-like noises [pdf]
Are they in that type of business generally?

Their ELM327 OBD chip is also a PIC: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/ELM327

dreamlayers··on Show HN: Shell utility to encrypt a file into a self-decrypting script
I don't like the idea of needing to execute a file to decrypt it. That could be abused by someone, adding malicious code to the decryption code.

Of course you could inspect the file, but that's extra work which many people won't bother with.

I guess what's really needed is a simple encrypted format that's easy to decrypt without needing to worry about command line arguments. For example, people are generally satisfied with .tar.* formats and not looking for self extracting compressed formats.

dreamlayers··on The average size of Web pages is now the average size of a Doom install
In the late 00s I remember turning on an old computer with a 650 MHz Athlon CPU and being surprised that web browsing performance in Firefox wasn't bad. Now if I try that with a 1 GHz Pentium 3, performance is absolutely horrible. Is this why?
