Became a hacker after learning to read, sold my first company when I was 10, and started a VC fund at 13. I program for breakfast, create disruptive companies for lunch, and eat PhDs for dinner. While asleep, I generate passive-income and dream of my next TED talk.

dreamdu5t··on The power of prediction markets
It's worth pointing out that X% of people betting an event will happen is not the same thing as an event having X% chance of happening. The former is an estimate of occurrence and the latter is a measure of the occurrence. This is a common conflation with statistics I hear when people talk about predictions.
dreamdu5t··on When the Genius Men of Silicon Valley Suddenly Don't Seem So Smart
Lately HN seems dominated by politics, opinion pieces, and pop-sci stuff. Someone should do a simple keyword analysis of the last 5 years and see if this is true. Some sort of HN trend analysis would be a great weekend project.
dreamdu5t··on YC, Thiel and Trump – 100 Shades of Gray
Political positions are not necessarily opinions. Opinions and preferences are not facts. Pretending they are is either stupid or disingenuous. Where did this attitude originate?
dreamdu5t··on Introducing GitHub Community Guidelines
I take issue with GH asserting itself as a community and proclaiming to speak for its users. Is Walmart a community? Is Chipotle a community? Shouldn't community members get a voice in the decision making? This particular notion of community is absurd.
dreamdu5t··on Numerai – A hedge fund built by a global community of anonymous data scientists
That's true only if stock market data is completely random and that there's no signal to predict on. That doesn't seem to be the case, considering hedge funds successfully use ML on historical data to capture alpha. You don't need a model to work forever to be successful.
dreamdu5t··on Google's “Director of Engineering” Hiring Test
It seems easier to get Google to fund and then acquire your startup then get hired there.
dreamdu5t··on Facebook Has Repeatedly Trended Fake News Since Firing Its Human Editors
I don't want AI or humans deciding what I read. I want to choose what I read. I would like to just turn off "trending" whatever the fuck altogether. Give me back the Facebook that was just content from my friends...
dreamdu5t··on Serverless Architectures
Serverless now means "servers in the cloud" ? So what do we call apps that don't use servers!? I'm actually writing one right now...
dreamdu5t··on Critical Update on DAO Vulnerability
The hacker should sue them for violating the contract by trying to fork and block him!
dreamdu5t··on Microsoft is the first big company to say it's serving the legal marijuana trade
What a cumbersome, wasteful, unnecessary regulatory system.

It says a lot about the US that the food they eat does not have this level of monitoring and regulation (to track outbreaks like E. Coli) but marijuana does, despite not killing anyone.

dreamdu5t··on Faithful Elm and the Amazing Router
There is one: PureScript. You can build node apps with it and use it with webpack. There's even an Elm-like UI library https://github.com/alexmingoia/purescript-pux
dreamdu5t··on “autocomplete=off is ignored on non-login input elements”
Standards are just made-up shit. Most of them are formalized descriptions of what people were already doing before the standard existed.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but no browsers have formally committed to adhering to the standards.

dreamdu5t··on Facebook Offers Tools for Those Who Fear a Friend May Be Suicidal
It's seen as a problem because most people who attempt suicide regret it or change their mind later.
dreamdu5t··on In poor neighborhoods, McDonald’s have become de-facto community centers
So where should the focal point of your community be? What super-sophisticated place do you socialize at? A bar? Starbucks? The mall? At home in front of the computer?
dreamdu5t··on In poor neighborhoods, McDonald’s have become de-facto community centers
What makes it a cultural wasteland, exactly? Where are people supposed to be socializing, if not the place they like to eat? Mass production is what enables McDonald's to provide good food at super cheap prices. Probably the best food value for your money in the entire USA.

McDonald's food isn't unhealthy as part of a balanced diet. It's no less healthy than chipotle if you're getting a soda. I don't eat there but McDonald's is simply amazing for providing so much great food at rock-bottom prices.

dreamdu5t··on Appeals court upholds FCC's net neutrality order
And how would T-Mobile be compensated for that? AFAIK, the reason they're able to do this is because Netflix, Youtube, etc. pays them to be part of the program.
dreamdu5t··on Appeals court upholds FCC's net neutrality order
Can someone explain why T-Mobile is legally allowed to provide free streaming for YouTube and Netflix? Didn't net neutrality prevent that? Or am I just out of the loop?

The thing is... I like them preferentially treating YouTube and Netflix traffic by not counting it towards my bandwidth limit. The "fair" alternative sucks: I would simply not stream on my phone anymore because it would be too expensive.

dreamdu5t··on Caution: The DAO Can Turn into a Naturally-Arising Ponzi
For anyone who wasn't already aware, there are many intentional and open Ponzi dapps running out there.

Source: http://dapps.ethercasts.com/ (search for "Ponzi")

dreamdu5t··on Machine learning for financial prediction
There's a hedge fund built by anonymous data scientists - https://numer.ai

You can use ML to make money on encrypted stock data for free. Think Kaggle but the winning models are used to trade.

dreamdu5t··on Ask HN: What is the MOST epic resume you've ever seen?
ResumAI. It uses viewing time and a genetic algorithm to display your resume and learns to be more effective over time by changing its layout.
dreamdu5t··on Open access: All human knowledge is there, so why can’t everybody access it?
So we should pay royalties for using Calculus? Do we need to pay royalties everytime we use certain equations?

Ridiculous.

dreamdu5t··on RIAA to .ORG Registry: Take down ThePirateBay
Google is worse than the pirate bay considering they profit from pirated material.
dreamdu5t··on Ask HN: Open source local equivalent for Heroku
"cloud platform" and "host locally" are contradictory. Do you mean hosting on your own hardware, a server colocated in a data center, or hosted in the cloud such as EC2??
dreamdu5t··on A Guaranteed Income for Every American
I feel surrounded by total idiots. None of the math adds up... Cost of living is not considered at all. I'm not against the basic idea but the proposals are beyond half-baked - they're idiotic. I get the feeling nobody writing this UBI stuff has any experience or understanding of the welfare systems they're aiming to replace.
dreamdu5t··on A few questions for the Slack engineering team
We finally ditched Slack and went back to email. Everyone (25+) has email, knows how to use it, and gets them instantly on their smartphones. We have a rule that if it can't be written in email, then to have a phone or real-life conversation.

It's been a couple weeks since we made the change, people were very skeptical, but now everyone feels a lot less stressed-out and engineering is overjoyed and its been a boon to productivity. Turns out a lot of time was wasted just chatting and being interrupted.

I'd be very reluctant to use a team chat service ever again.

dreamdu5t··on Async and Await
Don't wait for the JS community to slowly realize monads. Use PureScript today and stop worrying about callbacks.
dreamdu5t··on What Urbit is
This is the most interesting and important project since the WWW.
dreamdu5t··on Uber Turns to Saudi Arabia for $3.5B Cash Infusion
That's what they tell everyone when people start questioning the fundamentals. It's what they told me two years ago when I interviewed there. Linking drivers with riders is not a complex problem. It doesn't even require machine learning. It doesn't require ongoing research. The whole dispatch infrastructure is mostly node and redis running predetermined matching algorithms.
dreamdu5t··on Ask HN: What is something that doesn't exist that you would pay for?
Why does privacy matter? What is it protecting against? Medical record privacy has caused millions if not billions in lost productivity. People are probably dying because of this. Coming from a country that has centralized digital access to medical records (Taiwan), the US obsession with medical record privacy seems insane.

Wake me up when the DAO does something interesting
