downWidOutaFite··on White House threatens to veto anti-EV bill just passed by US House
Isn't that only when you include the federal tax credit?
downWidOutaFite··on Taking low-dose aspirin is associated with 20% reduction in cancer deaths
I'm annoyed that the FDA has kept cox-2 selective inhibitors restricted when the data I've seen shows they have lower GI risks and similar cardiovascular risks as other NSAIDs.
downWidOutaFite··on Ancient redwoods recover from fire by sprouting 1000-year-old buds
The small tribes of the northwest might have used fire for clearing land in their immediate area but there is no evidence that they were managing hundreds of thousands of acres of forests in order to reduce large wildfires.
downWidOutaFite··on Ancient redwoods recover from fire by sprouting 1000-year-old buds
Supposedly. In my readings the evidence is thin on this oft-repeated claim.
downWidOutaFite··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
Like I said, I put my money where my mouth is. GOOG's monopoly-fueled glory days will soon be behind it. In tech, if you stand still for too long you will eventually be left behind.
downWidOutaFite··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
Keeping quiet about perceived problems is exactly the kind of toxic political lack of transparency that Ian is calling out here.
downWidOutaFite··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
Google is getting beat badly on multiple fronts, even Search, and has pissed away a mountain of goodwill. It's living off of declining 15 year old achievements. I wouldn't call Sundar a steady hand, he has destroyed much more potential than he has created, even if the stock has continued to go up it won't for much longer. I sold a significant position in GOOG a few years ago and I'm certain it was the right call.
downWidOutaFite··on Reflecting on 18 Years at Google
He spent the last 9 years in competition with Android so it's not surprising that he has some biases about it
downWidOutaFite··on Emmett Shear becomes interim OpenAI CEO as Altman talks break down
I find it kind of funny that Altman got into this kind of trouble when presumably he is an expert on startup structure after having advised startups for so many years at YC.
downWidOutaFite··on OpenAI negotiations to reinstate Altman hit snag over board role
Honestly, who cares? CEOs are just for marketing and hobnobbing. The researchers and engineers are what really matters.
downWidOutaFite··on Altman sought billions for AI chip venture before OpenAI ouster
I don't think it's exceptional. I've signed probably a dozen engineering employment contracts and don't remember any of them specifying minimum hours or overtime. Isn't that the definition of salaried employee? I agree that "butt in seat" hours can be an expectation but usually it's not in the contract.
downWidOutaFite··on Altman sought billions for AI chip venture before OpenAI ouster
Most salaried engineering contracts don't specify anything about time besides an undefined "full-time". I've had several companies very happy with my production at <30 hours per week. But the contracts state very clearly that I should not take another job.
downWidOutaFite··on Musk vows 'thermonuclear lawsuit' as advertisers flee X amid antisemitism storm
I like how free speech somehow now means silencing your critics.
downWidOutaFite··on Apple files legal challenge to EU's Digital Markets Act
The fact that no businesses have been willing to distribute via sideloading and save the 30% cut is pretty good proof that it doesnt work.
downWidOutaFite··on Apple files legal challenge to EU's Digital Markets Act
In Epic's lawsuit against Google they argue that google makes sideloading unusable for businesses by making users jump through a bunch of hoops and scare screens.
downWidOutaFite··on Apple files legal challenge to EU's Digital Markets Act
Maybe we should change that law.
downWidOutaFite··on Supreme Court of the United States Statement Regarding the Code of Conduct [pdf]
Now that we've entrenched the ideas that impeachment and the judiciary are political weapons we've broken the checks and balances that the constitution put in place. In the before times Thomas would've been impeached in a bipartisan manner.
downWidOutaFite··on Jezebel to shut down after 16 years as parent company lays off staff
This is still repercussions from Thiel's attack on Gawker. In an ideal democracy partisan billionaires should not have this kind of power over our media.
downWidOutaFite··on Major outages across ChatGPT and API
I would think that ChatGPT is also delegating to some other subsystem.

downWidOutaFite··on The OpenAI Keynote
There's a "Proffesor Synapse" prompt that has been floating around for awhile, people share it and seem to find it useful. So there's some market proof that people appreciate and will gravitate towards popular prompts.
downWidOutaFite··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
Bernie Maddoff got 150
downWidOutaFite··on Sam Bankman-Fried Convicted
No. He might be never leave prison again
downWidOutaFite··on Firefox got faster for real users in 2023
I just went through Lynx's the <20 CVEs over the last 20 years and couldn't find any that haven't been fixed. Same cannot be said for Chrome or Firefox which have dozens every year.
downWidOutaFite··on Use YouTube to improve your English pronunciation
If you actually learned using this you might end up with a mishmash of British and American pronunciations.
downWidOutaFite··on How many billions of transistors in an iPhone processor?
The book Sapiens argues that tech has made us less happy ever since the invention of farming 10,000 years ago, the hunter gatherers were happier and healthier than the farm villagers. But since tech allows the population density to grow we get stuck in "the luxury trap", we can't go backwards or a bunch of people will die. And the unhappier larger village is more powerful than the hunter gatherers so they have an evolutionary advantage.

I think you could apply a similar theory to the modern capitalist world.

downWidOutaFite··on How Soap Works: The Science Behind Handwashing
This doesn't sound right. Soap is considered nontoxic. We all ingest soap residue from dishes and other hygiene and I've never heard anyone concerned about it.
downWidOutaFite··on Mars has a layer of molten rock inside
There is some wiggle in the tidal lock so you could get an earthrise near the edge of the dark side.
downWidOutaFite··on Trying to make sense of why Otis exploded en route to Acapulco
There's something going on over there: "From October 9 to October 25, western Mexico has been hit by FOUR consecutive eastern North Pacific tropical cyclones. " https://twitter.com/DrKimWood/status/1717557808147943922

downWidOutaFite··on Wait, what's a bookmarklet?
This is an important point. The only solution we're ever offered for security concerns is centralizing more and more control in the platform companies hands even though those same companies are increasingly abusing their power.
