doubtfuluser··on A misalignment of AI in mathematics
Im surprised about the sentiment in this discussion.

I totally see the problem Terence is describing. We are loosing a lot in understanding and focus if it continues like that. The solution found for Navier Stokes doesn’t have much „real value“ - but what almost always happened in the past when people worked on the difficult problems, these sparked new ideas / new theorems that broadened our knowledge. Think back at your grad studies, figuring out a proof as homework was hard, sometimes incredibly hard, but while doing it we gained a lot of understanding how things work. Now asking AI for the solution and „just“ getting it, risks our understanding, our creativity and our ability to connect the dots with other territories. I see it in students nowadays, there is much less understanding, much less creativity in finding solutions. I truly think this „short-path“ solution with the „death of struggle is one of the biggest risks with AI already for human development

doubtfuluser··on iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max
Sadly my 14 pro has a crack in the lower right screen, and the tele lense has some issue with fixing lens position / focus (? I hear some clickering and it doesn’t focus). Otherwise I would just stay another few years with it, now I’m going to upgrade - and yeah I’ll stay with Apple. I have some devices quite a few years old by them and still working flawlessly.
doubtfuluser··on On AI regulation and messaging
> „… it will actually be possible to cure most human disease in ~5-10 years, as crazy as it may sound to ordinary people …“

Nothing beats the hubris of the Silicon Valley CEOs and self proclaimed “elite”. I’m missing people calling out “we are better than that”… NOT

doubtfuluser··on What will be left for us to work on?
I think this is an important article that provides a framework how to think and navigate what’s happening.

What upset me a bit were phrases like “This is not a slogan. It’s a framework” which immediately devalued the work for me.

I have read so much Ai generated text recently, that I developed some AI-fatigue or AI-burnout, and I’m wondering if that might hit more fields - making more humans reject Ai work.

To be clear, I still like the text and I don’t know if it was written (partially) by Ai or not - but it’s this uncanny feeling I got reading it.

doubtfuluser··on Good results fine tuning a local LLM like Qwen 3:0.6B to categorize questions
But why using an encoder model instead of a BERT based model? For a pure classification that should be easier to train and work quite well
doubtfuluser··on New privacy frontier: Europe eyes crackdown on smart glasses
I hope Europe does this for real. I’m wondering how this privacy nightmare is eroding our standards so easily.

I certainly see the potential use of such - but the risks coming with such glasses at least in my opinion outweigh these uses..

Pleas, EU, ban this! Iirc there are already spy cams banned anyway in Germany, this should fall into the same category

doubtfuluser··on Anthropic apologizes for invisible Claude Fable guardrails
I’m wondering if their internal name is “Sophon” for this “feature”…
doubtfuluser··on Google to pay SpaceX $920M a month for compute capacity at xAI data centers
This feels actually like a pretty safe bet for Google, they secure the compute in case it works (I doubt that the described volume will be available in the near future), while if SpaceX doesn’t manage to provide there is not much loss. I see it more as another way of blowing up SpaceX valuation on paper…
doubtfuluser··on Show HN: TRUST – Coding Rust like it's 1989
Thank you for that - I’m definitely going to look into it. I realize that I lost the fun in coding. I’m in a different career stage now as well, but just seeing this reminded me of how I started a long time ago implementing snake, learning about graphics mode, double buffering / page flipping etc.

Everything felt exciting and so close to really understanding what’s going on. And just seeing the blue text interface reminded me of how much fun that was…

doubtfuluser··on Microsoft AI CEO pushes back against critics after recent Windows AI backlash
I think this is a super important point. Working on ai I’m really wondering where this will actually end in the case of our media consumption, AI is being used to generate more engaging content, this will imply ai will be almost a requirement to stay visible, so more ai will be used. In the end little to no “real content” will make it through.

Will there be a moment where people will leave social networks to get “real content” again? Will that be safe from AI optimization then?

Are we seeing the start of the demise of social media?

doubtfuluser··on Qwen-Image: Crafting with native text rendering
I’m seriously getting worried that we use models without openly discussing any potential shortcomings they have. We should somewhere have a list of models and their issues.
doubtfuluser··on Qwen-Image: Crafting with native text rendering
Can it generate images of a lone person standing in front of a column of tanks on Tiananmen Square?
doubtfuluser··on Cerebras launches Qwen3-235B, achieving 1.5k tokens per second
Very impressive speed. A bit OT: what is the current verdict on Qwen, Kimi et al. When it comes to censorship / bias concerning narratives not allowed in the origin country?

doubtfuluser··on Show HN: Semantic Calculator (king-man+woman=?)
doctor - man + woman = medical practitioner

Good to understand this bias before blindly applying these models (Yes- doctor is gender neutral - even women can be doctors!!)

doubtfuluser··on Presentation Slides with Markdown
What is the advantage over the reveal.js / quarto eco-system. I’m using that for my lectures, and am really happy about it (especially since it’s pretty easy to make an llm add automatic speaker notes and timing information)
doubtfuluser··on The effect of deactivating Facebook and Instagram on users' emotional state
> Intellectually many want this. But the feed shortcuts our reptile brain and gains more engagement minutes / day.

I’m not sure if that’s actually a “shortcut” to the reptile brain and it’s just about “I have to scroll more to get stuff I’m interested in. At least for me it feels like that and it causes me to use these social media things far less.

For me it feels more like intermittent rewards vs full rewards at once. Obviously for the ad-industry the intermittent rewards are more useful, that’s why we can’t have nice things

doubtfuluser··on Amazon event on February 26th – new Alexa?
It’s interesting that the wording is “see what’s coming next”… sounds to me like “we still don’t have it finished - but we are giving another preview after 1.5 years of no-show…”

Slightly unrelated- what you describe yourself sounds pretty much like a “scanner-personality”, maybe reading into this might help you. When I read about it the first time it was a pretty exciting moment seeing my personality matching and also seeing my struggles with staying motivated/interested after I learned what I wanted as a reason of it

doubtfuluser··on Is Wordpress.org GDPR Compliant?
Thanks for writing this up!!!

I just wondered about the following (unrelated) triggered by this: Am I entitled under GDPR to get the internal writeups on my interview performance when I interviewed at a company? Does it matter whether I am in the EU but interview at a US company?

doubtfuluser··on Flappy Bird in 1000 lines of C
I like these challenges, where people rebuild stuff low level and “line efficient” (not saying this is a good idea in general). This makes me curious and I can learn a lot from these examples.

I was a bit disappointed though to see that this code used SDL for sprites and more stuff though. That’s not 1000 lines anymore imo. Still the code was an interesting read.

Thank you OP

doubtfuluser··on Realizing the dream of good workplace software
I have to say, Facebook at work was probably the best thing I ever used for collaboration and knowledge sharing. It was so much better than slack, I never understood why people wanted this chat style for group communication.
doubtfuluser··on Llama 3.2: Revolutionizing edge AI and vision with open, customizable models
For Apple - maybe, but they also recently open sourced some of their models. For Google: they host and want to make money on the models by you using them on their platform.

Meta has no interest in that but directly benefits from advancements on top of Llama.
