doodliego··on Unofficial Winamp Web Site
Same. So I just open up task manager and show them that it uses only 3.4 MB. As opposed to Teams, Chrome, and all this other bloatware.
doodliego··on Judge orders Google to turn over a full year of actor’s data
This is a court-authorized search warrant authorized by a aitting judge. It doesn't get any more legal than that, and it's Google or any other company's legal duty to comply.
doodliego··on Evidence that the key assumption made in discovery of dark energy is in error
The Luminiferous Aether was popular too.
doodliego··on A former Egyptian engineer found the secret to building a big gas-station chain
This guy is putting customers first, which is the exact opposite of most UX design philosophies I've been on the receiving end of. The entire discipline prioritizes minimalism, copying Apple, and making random changes to the interface just so they have "accomplished" something, which is how you get randomly broken messes like Youtube.

If UX designers made a gas pump, it would be a featureless white pillar with a single button and a hose and it wouldn't work.

doodliego··on Samsung chair imprisoned and 24 others found guilty in union-busting case
Compared to the token fines US firms receive, seeing a white collar criminal sentenced to prison is refreshing.
doodliego··on The Hierarchy of Cringe
> For example, there are paired exercises where people troll each other as hard as they can... But it's a safe space, with trained moderators around, in case people lose it.

Just curious, but where and why are you undergoing that kind of training? I've never heard of those tactics being used outside of cult-like environments or some kind of abusive therapy. Military boot camp, maybe? It sounds extreme and unethical.

doodliego··on Feds ordered Google location dragnet to solve Wisconsin bank robbery
"If you do the crime, leave the phone behind."

Criminals will adapt, they always do.

Because this was a bank robbery, it's a Federal warrant which is harder for Google to fight or procrastinate on (if for some reason they chose to).

doodliego··on Tales of Science and Fiction
That's a serious mischaracterization, the author is clearly a fan of science fiction, but he prefers (from what I gather from the review, at least) the literary and metaphysical forms to the Campbell school. And it's a perfectly valid take. I consider myself well read in science fiction and of the writers of the 50s and 60s, I would rather read PK Dick or Jack Vance than Asimov's akward prose or Heinlein's sexual hangups. Not that Heinlein doesn't have great moments, for example one of the best time travel stories ever, but he's hardly infallible or immune to criticism.
doodliego··on Open letter from an Android developer to the Google Play team
Get 100 developers and small companies with similar stories and it should be easy to convince a jury that Google arbitrarily, without cause or review, destroyed these people's livelihoods and should be held liable and accountable.

EULA is not some magic shield against the actual court system, either.

doodliego··on As crime dries up, Japan’s police hunt for things to do (2017)
They should create some squads to work on cold case files.
doodliego··on Netflix drops 10% after missing on global paid subscribers
I'm cancelling my sub because the back catalog is non-existent in my region. It is impossible to find anything older than 2000 anymore. On top of that, their UI and search functions are straight-up garbage that deliberately steer you to their own trash.
doodliego··on Ask HN: How to deal with constantly getting cut off in work discussions?
The problem is definitely more noticeable on skype and other types of conference calls, because you miss all the nonverbal cues and loudmouthed narcissists can easily take over and derail all conversations with their voice alone.
doodliego··on Facebook, Carnegie Mellon build first AI that beats pros in 6-player poker
Should we be worried an AI developed by Facebook excels at a game of deception?
doodliego··on Artists Should Be Allowed to Fail
> a project is either "successful" and meets its funding goal, or "fails" because it doesn't.

This guy works at kickstarter, so his definition of success should be "when backers get what they paid for" not when kickstarter gets paid. This attitude is symptomatic of this company's callous disregard for its own customers and the proliferation of scams and frauds on its service.

doodliego··on Nasa Image and Video Library is now open and free
Here is some good news for a change that can be celebrated and enjoyed.
doodliego··on Google Is Turning Off the Works-with-Nest API
Why should anyone let a Google self-driving car on the road? They will just end support for it whenever "internal politics shift."

Let's ban Google from working on life-saving medical devices, because they will just get bored and stop supporting the software.

doodliego··on Small retailers who sold through Amazon are facing a tax time bomb
"The states are prohibited from passing ex post facto laws by clause 1 of Article I, Section 10. This is one of the relatively few restrictions that the United States Constitution made to both the power of the federal and state governments before the Fourteenth Amendment." - wikipedia

What California is doing is unconstitutional and they should be slapped, hard.

doodliego··on Facebook's Email-Harvesting Practice Is Under Investigation in N.Y.
The Computer Fraud and Abuse Act (CFAA) prohibits accessing a computer without authorization, or in excess of authorization.
doodliego··on Icons: Avoid temptation and start with user needs
Solid write-up of the issue. Videogames (among others) are a prime offender with this. Every game has to invent a whole slew of overly designed and difficult to decipher icons, but a game is often something you move on from quickly and on to the next one. Forcing users to learn a whole new language so your art directors can feel special is terrible.
doodliego··on Phone Addicts Are the New Drunk Drivers
The problem with your solution is that voice assistants excel at practical tasks which aren't at the root of phone and social media addiction. These are people addicted to the dopamine rush of validation and acceptance they get from social media like FB, IG, and Twitter, as wel las personal text messages. It's an addiction like nicotine, small effects repeatedly played out over time. But it gets to the point where they are dangers to all of us when they are driving on top of all the other social costs (worse performances at work and school, for example).
doodliego··on Google removed my ads-free app for “deceptive ads”
This is why class action lawsuits exist.
doodliego··on Facebook’s Crisis Management Algorithm Runs on Outrage
From the article:

> Facebook would remove certain posts in some high-risk countries, including Sri Lanka, but only if they were reported by local nonprofits and would lead to “imminent violence.”

Wow, way to exploit nonprofits to provide free content moderation for one of the most profitable corporations in the world.

doodliego··on I Ditched My Phone and Unbroke My Brain
Cigarettes might be a better analogy: that little pick-me-up in small bursts throughout the day.
doodliego··on I Ditched My Phone and Unbroke My Brain
I'm not a cyclist, what does reduced drag by biking in a group have to do with healing crystals?
doodliego··on How Former Ref Tim Donaghy Conspired to Fix NBA Games
The NBA and the disgraced ref maintained that he bet on his own games, but did not fix outcomes.

The ESPN article argues otherwise through statistical analysis of foul calls as well as investigative reporting with the other gamblers and bookies in Donegha's circle of corruption. Based on their statements, it's rather conclusive that he skillfully manipulated games, although he couldn't control every outcome.

The article also highlights an unfortunate situation where Donaghy told the FBI about other crooked refs, but the FBI briefed NBA commissioner David Stern about their investigation early on, while it was still ongoing.

The investigation was then leaked to the press (strongly implying Stern did it). This made it impossible for Donaghy to wear a wire since he was now disgraced and fired from his job, and the NBA maintained that Donaghy's was an isolated incident of one rogue ref placing bets but not affecting games.

That's my summary of their reporting anyway. I found it persuasive.

doodliego··on Bookworm: A Simple, Focused eBook Reader
I've created 80+ ebooks using Calibre, but it's too over-featured for casual ebook reading. I've used IceCream for that but I'll give Bookworm a look.
doodliego··on Problems plagued U.S. Navy destroyer Fitzgerald before fatal collision
After reading the article, no, the Navy probably does not need more overpaid business consultants with powerpoints full of easy answers. It needs to do something about inexperienced, undertrained, overworked crews in its ships.

The CO and XO shouldn't be sleeping while their ship is crossing a busy sealane full of behemoth freighters driving on autopilot in the dark.

doodliego··on My dog was killed on a walk with a walker ordered through Wag
This bullying, cover-it-up response toward customers is telling. If I was an early investor, I would be worried that this symptomatic of larger scales issues of deceit regarding metrics and finance. Sociopathic behavior is a huge red flag.
doodliego··on Snap CFO Tim Stone Is Resigning
What bizarre comparisons! Apple has always sold sought-after physical products for profit. FB for all its crime makes incredible income through paid advertising. Snap is a dot-com gusher bleeding red ink.
doodliego··on The Overloaded Soldier: Why U.S. Infantry Now Carry More Weight Than Ever
Not too quibble too much, but US Civil War soldiers were marching all over the eastern United States, not just for parades and pageants. They went through rough terrain, with no guarantee of supplies, and many soldiers ended up barefoot when their shoes fell apart. And many times they had to keep it up for days on end in order to escape or catch up to an enemy.
