I have never really kept a journal, but when OhLife came along I thought it was a great idea, for about 3 days (the idea is still good). OhLife is great, my wanning self discipline however, is not so great.

I think PHP is not a bad choice. It's not as cool as Ruby but it gets things done (not that Ruby doesn't). If I were in your shoes, I'd go with Ruby, just because my intuition says so.

Normally, I'm a software producer and I've worked with a few technologies that are great, but this year (as of late) I'm becoming a software consumer.

I've finally gotten to experience the Kindle 3 (Christmas gift) and the Google CR-48 is pretty sweet too. I believe the Kindle will change the amount I read. I have so many books on deck. My biggest challenge is balancing development time with watching movie time and more reading time.

That is truly impressive.

This is a great response to the other post (http://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=1983141). I think the work of web designers is vastly undervalued and to say a quality design is worth only $15.00 is pretty absurd. 50K, okay, it's a bit of hyperbole but point well made.

I agree. Until you deal with the root issue, you're only going to replace one addiction with another (beer for weed). Why be addicted to anything, or what's the fundemental cause of your dependence on substance? That's the real question you need to answer.

In addition to the uncertainty of landing clients, there's the issue of actually getting paid. It may take 3 weeks to a month to land a client, another few weeks to be able to actually start working, a few weeks to send your first invoince but if that client turns out to be a flake with money, you have a lot of time into a loosing deal and you have start over. It aint easy consulting.

If you know the idea can work, than a limited/non-existent marketing budget shouldn't stop you and it certainly shouldn't discourage you this much.

It sounds to me like you need to dig deeper, both into getting more funding and reviving your motivation. You've come this far. It seems a foolish idea to me that you would consider pulling the plug becacuse you lack cash for marketing.

Cash can be found. Keep at it. Perseverence is hard and success has peaks and valleys. Just because you're in a valley right now, doesn't mean it will last forever.

Couldn't agree more. Don't set a maximum. That's way too low. If you want to be a premium Elance, you can't set a max.

This seems a bit like The Ladders for freelancing. You can quote me on that (JK). On a serious note, I would set the minimum higher. I don't get up in the morning for less than $50 per hour.

I think Moodle is great, but it doesn't include any social features. I keep hearing from teachers that this new generation want's social features in an LMS.

As for BlackBoard (horrible software that it is), I don't think (and I could be very wrong) that they would waste time or money on a little guy selling to small schools and businesses. I do think they would go after some like Microsoft if they dared create a LMS.

If you are teaching yourself a language, I think it's most important to gain an understanding of the general concepts of software development.

So pick a language (I learned with PHP years ago) and stick with it knowing that you can expand later.

Once you have a foundation of the concepts of software development, you can move around and use different languages and you'll pick them up pretty easily because you will then be working mostly with different sytax.

I wouldn't worry too much about being locked into the language you learn with but I think PHP or Ruby would be good choices.

I agree with this. Just doing it is the only trick. It helps to get off the social networks and websites (HN too), put your head down and just work.

I would agree that you should be more clear about what your service does. Not trying to rip on you or anything. Just trying to help. It's not easy to get your concept across quickly, and it takes a lot of time to nail it concisely, but you should be able to sum it up in a few sentences and maybe with a super-short demo video.
