Unemployed Engineers - Why?
There is a braindead answer to this Question.
Because the careers of Engineers have been sold a long time ago. As early as Oct. 2000 congress passed a bill to allow in ~600,000 H1s' with basic degrees and an unlimited number with advance degrees. Last company that I worked for had no engineers that were American born that were hired within the last fifteen years. I could not believe it. They were even very reluctant to hire foreigners with Green Cards. Wanted young engineers from India and China and the middle east that they could work to the bone for low wage and were not likely to leave. If they hired someone who was not H1, it was only to pillage their advanced experience to fill in the vast technical holes that were opening up in their organisation throught their restrictive hiring practices. I was amazed at the level of the conspiracy. Major US companies not hiring a single US engineer. Cost cutting that had become very sohpisticed and sold our careers out to insourcing. Now I am 25 years from retirement, am at the peak of my career with a Masters and 16 years work experience and yet have to retrain in another field. It is either that or starve.
I would not advise anyone to engage in a career in Engineering. You are signing yourself up for a 10 to 15 year lifespan at most.
Stay away, become anything - even a nurse. Our careers and professions have been sold out through bribes in congrees to India, China, the Middle East and Malaysis for penny's on the dollar over a decade ago.
