doki_pen··on Why I hate virtualenv and pip
It's an anti-pattern to not pin versions in libs. setup.py is a contract. Every version listed as a dependency should have been tested, otherwise the package will bitrot. It should be safe to pin major versions, if you can trust upstream packages to follow best practices with version numbers and you aren't using any "undocumented" features of the lib. Ideally, your packages are tested and built into binary packages before they are deployed to production systems. If you are following that best practice, then your risk of a patch breaking your system are minimized.
doki_pen··on Why I hate virtualenv and pip
Just create a setup.py and put your deps in there.
doki_pen··on Why I hate virtualenv and pip
Binary python packages are useless IMHO. If I want binary packages, I make a binary package for my package management system. Running pip/easy_install on a production system is an anti-pattern.
doki_pen··on FuckIt.py - The Python Error Steamroller
I just wrapped all my testcase's in fuckit and all my tests are now passing. I'm ready to ship!
doki_pen··on Leaked Uber Numbers Point to Over $1B Gross, $213M Revenue
Hate to make a meta post. But I submitted the link to the ValleyWag article and it got killed.. Not sure why.
doki_pen··on How we pay royalties: an overview
Can this system be gamed for profit?

1. Setup a short track on one of the linked providers. 2. Setup a bot to play the track over and over.

Do they pay out equally for tracks from paid vs. unpaid spotify accounts? If so, you could setup a bunch of anonymous accounts to increase stream plays.

doki_pen··on Thoughts on Bitcoin
I don't know why it is required that it is used in legitimate purchases. No one questions the value of gold, yet not many people use it to make purchases. I suspect bitcoins value will follow the same pattern as gold, once it is stable. When the world is full of uncertainty, it's value will rise. When things are steady, it's value will fall.
doki_pen··on Help Scale NPM
Better ideas than this:

* Offered paid, private registry that doesn't cost an insane amount of money. Somehow host it on the same metal as the public repo.

* Decentralize. Make it easier to setup mirrors or proxy/cache layers. If I had a simple to deploy npm caching proxy that didn't need to replicate every upstream package, only the ones that I use, it would reduce load upstream and protect me when upstream fails. ++ if I can host private packages there as well.

doki_pen··on Penny Arcade’s Insultingly Horrible Job
Instead of tearing down the people who still have decent jobs, why don't you focus your energy on trying to improve things for the people who don't? There was a time when a factory job that anyone could get was at least as good as the average modern day software job.
doki_pen··on How I saved $39,420 by not buying a domain without a prototype
If you buy a domain for x and can't resell it for some approximation of x, then you paid too much.
doki_pen··on Building an invalid string in Python 2.x
What if you were scraping a webpage and it reported its encoding as UTF-7?
doki_pen··on Senate hearing on Bitcoin [video]
All the politicians are thinking "A completely anonymous way to get campaign funds? This sounds incredible!"
doki_pen··on A living death: Sentenced to die behind bars for what?
Go and make a rational case to voters and tell me how that works out. Rational people already know. I suspect this is to convince the irrational.
doki_pen··on Hacker News was down
is there any reason people don't do this:

127.0.0.1 mail.google.com gmail.com news.ycombinator.com [etc]

Does Mac not handle it or something?

doki_pen··on Why we revert to original titles
My biggest pet peeve with HN 2013 vs. HN <2012 is the article titles. There used to be a strong culture of never editorializing and always letting people know what they are clicking. Lately I have no idea what the article is about by it's title. Many are even link baity. It makes it much harder to skim through the list of titles for something I may find interesting.
doki_pen··on Ask HN: How do you manage passwords in teams?
rackspace, for example, doesn't support multiple user accounts.
doki_pen··on Left with Nothing
This simply means that the banks should hurry up and auction the houses instead of sitting on them and waiting for their value to increase.
doki_pen··on Node.js incorrectly parses HTTP methods
The mailing list just had a long post by Isaacs about how 0.10 is the last release before 1.0 and that 1.0 should be backward compatible with anything you write for 0.10.
doki_pen··on How Porn Invaded Bitcoin
Interesting because the outcome seems to be either:

1. Distributing the Bitcoin DB, knowing what it contains, is illegal. or 2. Illegal content can be distributed through some loophole.

There doesn't seem to be a good outcome for this. It seems that poisoning the Bitcoin DB with illegal content might be a good weapon against Bitcoin.

doki_pen··on Visualizing discussions on Reddit with a D3 network and Embedly
It would be pretty interesting to see this applied to HN. I realize it would be more difficult because there isn't an API and pg is pretty harsh with the rate limiting.
doki_pen··on The White Hat's Dilemma
I'm calling bullshit. Maybe this gentlemen would have taken some job that paid less(i doubt it), but it's hard to believe that a programmer, of all people, would be blackballed industry wide for refusing to implement some spying mechanism. Give me a break. If anyone is in a position to rebel against this type of system it's those of us in software. We have a strong community of anti-establishment minded people, we have a very strong job market and we make much more than a living wage.
doki_pen··on Pressure cookers, backpacks, and quinoa, oh my
Burn sources? That cat is already out of the bag. Everyone knows what's happening. I bet the leaks are incredibly liberating to intelligence. They no longer have to maintain the facade and can actually use their data to the full extent.
doki_pen··on NSA director heckled on stage at Black Hat security conference
every article that I saw yesterday painted the general as a hero and the heckler as a turd. It seemed like a concerted PR effort to me. It's about discrediting you opponents in the public forum.

Aside from that, It struck me that a lot of people at conferences like this are on the NSA payroll one way or another. I'd hardly call the group a bunch of freedom fighters.

doki_pen··on My hell as a 911 operator
I don't see how you could develop such a system without partnership from some government. How would you test it?
doki_pen··on Minion drawn entirely using CSS

doki_pen··on Dijkstra: “You will be treated as grown-ups”
In the case of mutiny, it is in the leaders interest to engage with his fellow student. In the case of the good student, he's competing with his fellow student, so it's in his best interest not to help them succeed.
doki_pen··on Motorola cell phones are regularly phoning home

doki_pen··on USA must not hunt down whistleblower Edward Snowden
[edit: added more]

Are we fighting a war with China?

From Wikipedia:

Oran's Dictionary of the Law (1983) defines treason as "...[a]...citizen's actions to help a foreign government overthrow, make war against, or seriously injure the [parent nation]." In many nations, it is also often considered treason to attempt or conspire to overthrow the government, even if no foreign country is aiding or involved by such an endeavor.

The point is, if we can argue about it, then there should be a fair trial to determine whether or not it was treason. The president and other leaders saying it's treason doesn't lend itself to a fair trial in the future. The appropriate response is "He committed crimes, we will have a trial to determine the extent of those crimes and whether or not it is treason".

doki_pen··on USA must not hunt down whistleblower Edward Snowden
He never confessed to treason.
doki_pen··on USA must not hunt down whistleblower Edward Snowden
I might consider your opinion if I thought he would be treated fairly in trial. If the last few years are any indication, there is no chance of that happening. The POTUS has already said that he is guilty of treason before any trial has begun. Do you realize the outrageousness of that simple fact?
