doctornemo··on A year without caffeine (2013)
Thank you, andsoitis, for returning to this blog post. I also appreciate all the comments here, especially folks telling their stories. I should write a sequel now.

doctornemo··on Exploring the BBC Micro:bit Software Stack and OS
A few weeks ago I saw dozens of Singaporean kids showing off projects they'd built with the Micro:bit. They learned a good deal, had been very creative, and were clearly interested in learning more. Sounds like a good outcome.
doctornemo··on The Case for RSS
Hear hear! I've been arguing this for several years now, most recently: https://bryanalexander.org/2017/07/07/i-defy-the-world-and-g... . Facebook's algo is deeply messed up.
doctornemo··on Lbry.io – decentralized digital library
I poked around a bit and shared some notes here: https://bryanalexander.org/2017/03/19/what-is-lbry-and-what-... LBRY's Twitter team was also very responsive.
doctornemo··on Accounting for the Rise in College Tuition [pdf]
"$640k/lifetime is really small." Pretty fine payout for $30K in debt (which is the current average for the 2/3rds of students who own debt).
doctornemo··on What happened to millions of Creative Commons-licensed photos in Flickr?
It's a bug, which appeared around April 1. Fixed now.
doctornemo··on What happened to millions of Creative Commons-licensed photos in Flickr?
That's what they tweeted at me. So, good news: the CC-licensed photos are still there. Not so good news: the bug was there for 5 days w/o being noticed or fixed.
doctornemo··on What happened to millions of Creative Commons-licensed photos in Flickr?
"a 20yr-old, asked 'what's Flicker?'" Wow.

It was fun reading this, as I just finished _Command and Control_ this morning.
doctornemo··on Vermont Quits War on Drugs to Treat Heroin Abuse as Health Issue
If only the state would spend more money on this strategy. But we aren't.
doctornemo··on Redesigning Mary Meeker's Internet Slideshow
Not bad. I like the way he streamlined the text.

Dark background... yes, that would be better for a conference room projection. But I prefer the white for my laptop view.

doctornemo··on ‘Alien’ creator H.R. Giger is dead
Ah, what a loss.

I remember being astonished by Giger's vision in Alien. For years I hunted down posters, calendars, and books, which weren't always available or affordable. Like others here, I relished the Dark Seed game for its tribute to Giger.

This takes me back to an earlier stage of my life, and makes me very sad. What a vision!

doctornemo··on American airports do not rank in Top of the world
Agreed.

American airports generally do a bad job is many areas. The number and access to electrical outlets can be awful. WiFi is usually nonexistent or for-fee and lame. And food is often just sad.

doctornemo··on IT for Oppression
Interesting to see Schneier make this point. Assange et al argue similarly in _Cypherpunks_.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine (part 2)
I should have mentioned this, and will revise the post: yes, I was tested, and no, H. Pylori wasn't the culprit. Which is rare.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine (part 2)
Good thought, andrew, but it still doesn't work for me. It's hard to wake up from a nap, and I'm dazed - and tired! - afterwards. I've tried this all times of day, and each time it's like being clobbered by a baseball bat.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine (part 2)
It does not, according to the various medical people I asked. Alas, I still don't like the taste.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine (part 2)
Shantaram is a terrific read.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine (part 2)
You're correct about not trying to fix the sleep schedule before kicking caffeine. I was just too damned busy, for far too long. Cf my above comment about caffeine's continuous nature, too.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine (part 2)
jessriedel is correct. That's true of most cases. Alas, not mine.

Interesting view, jperras. For me the caffeine changed loomed largest, partly because it was a nearly continuous part of my day. Eating meals was a handful of hours; ditto adding exercise. But I usually had coffee/soda to hand.

doctornemo··on A year without caffeine
I put up part 2 today, Mz.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine
Here's part 2: http://bryanalexander.org/2013/01/06/a-year-without-caffeine...
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine
OK, I can check with family doc. But I'm not seeing any of the ADD or ADHD symptoms.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine
I get comparisons to rabbis more often. And to the Taliban. Makes TSA interested in me.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine
Actually, I've never had a sign of ADD. I don't lose things, have decent impulse control, can pay attention for long periods of time, don't job-hop. Heck, I homestead and adore the films of Andrei Tarkovsky. :)

RSS, if you're interested in what I normally think about: education, technology, the future. Otherwise, you can use the contact form to send me your address. I'll ping you when part 2 goes live.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine
I'm shooting for a weekend followup, Mz. If you like, use the contact form to send me an email address, and I'll ping you when it's done.
doctornemo··on A year without caffeine
I was hoping to get it all done in one post, but the thing just kept growing. The mad extent of my habit wasn't something I recalled all at once. Part 2 is cooking up now. Maybe when it's done I'll paste 'em together.
