dmitrygr··on NAND-16: a computer built from 277,248 NAND gates
> Had I done it manually, there's also no way to prove I created it without LLM help

Of course there is -- ask you about it.

The coolest interview process i ever participated in (at MIT Lincoln Lab) was structured this way, and seems 100% LLM-proof. The interview was: give a talk about a cool/impressive technical thing you did for an hour and then answer questions from the interviewers about it for an hour. No way to succeed there without actually understanding.

dmitrygr··on Google ending ChromeOS support two years early
And this is why when Pixel phones started promising 7 years of support, everyone with a brain said “uh huh, suuuure” and kept buying iPhones which DO deliver that.

All poorer than Mississippi per-capita

dmitrygr··on The stupidity and arrogance of GNOME developers (2024)
Your unnecessary strawmanning was correctly predicted by the author.

> Because this isn’t my first rodeo, I can already foresee the criticism of this article: people are going to focus on my persona and my tone, not on what matters: GNOME‘s shitty practice.

And he was right. If I am giving you free fixes for your very real documented bugs, take them. You can hate me for it later, privately. At least that is what happens if you care about your users more than about your ego.

Sadly, this sane behavior is rare. And this is why the year of the Linux desktop will never happen.

dmitrygr··on 16GB iPod Nano 3G Upgrade
Now this is HACKER news! Kudos to the author! Well done.

The NOP thing was predictable. Qemu is not great at limiting itself to actual requested emulated hardware, often allowing supersets of instruction sets and abilities.

And NAND....is always unnecessarily exciting.

dmitrygr··on Supreme Court permits states to use SAVE database for citizenship checks
That is not a quote of anything I said. My original comment had not been edited. If you choose to convert my statements to strange exaggerated strawmen, do so without a quote implication please.

> Let’s make one thing clear: even if Satan was the one providing a patch, if the patch is valid and fixes a real issue, you apply the patch, period. Why? Because that’s what is best for the users.

Amen

dmitrygr··on Supreme Court permits states to use SAVE database for citizenship checks
> it makes me wonder why the administration is pursuing this at all.

Why do we pursue murderers? There are not that many.

Either the law matters or it does not. Pick your own world to live in, but be consistent.

dmitrygr··on Show HN: Jev Plays Pokémon Red
Considering it just made Charizard forget its only fire-type move "Ember" to learn "Counter", I note no signs of intelligence.

Said the guy who has not checked this thing for head-turn-to-pixels-changed latency. That is the one metric that nobody has approached the AVP on -- the one that keeps me (and many others) from being nauseous.

authorities just don't do anything. [...] But if you dare to insult Chancellor Merz on twitter, you get fined at most 2 days later.

This is on you and every other German. You know what to do. As long as you are not doing it, you lack a standing to complain. Recall that governments govern at the pleasure of their people.

"prefer" is irrelevant. I prefer to be a billionaire and own an island. Question is of ability.

security deposits are set such that "exceeds" is rare precisely because collecting is impossible on average
dmitrygr··on Seattle Bans Rental Junk Fees
Now we know you have never been a landlord... "Seek it after the fact" works out in ~0% of the time. Best case is you can sell the debt to a collections agency for ten cents on the dollar, and that is after a court case that you are unlikely to win in the first place. This is why security deposits exist. Cause "get it after" rarely works out.

Solution: you may put it on the receipt, but the price you advertise must be final all-in. Gas stations manage it just fine. Advertised price is what you pay, but receipt shows the taxes
