Is organic food an IQ tax?
dmitriy_ko··on California moves to cut off water to thousands of farmers
Why doesn't California use a more market-based approach? It could simply decide how much water can be sustainably consumed and then auction-off rights to that amount of water.
dmitriy_ko··on What Is a Flying Car? Inside Silicon Valley's 10-Year Quest
There's a lot more space available in the air than on the road so there shouldn't be any traffic jams even if everyone is flying. Above buildings whole horizontal plane is available with no obstructions, and flying cars could fly one above the other.
dmitriy_ko··on The work-from-home future is destroying bosses' brains
In 1930s people wouldn't heat the whole house and wouldn't heat it to 70 degrees in the dead of winter. People would heat one room to 50 degrees and stay there most of the time, and put on a jacket. Walking around in a t-shirt in the dead of winter is a very modern thing. You don't realize how much higher your standard for comfort are.
dmitriy_ko··on Ask HN: Are We in a Mega Bubble?
It's economic singularity.
dmitriy_ko··on Programming is hard
So it was more or less a large solo project? How do you know your code base was much better than those less clean/spaghetti codebases? Your own code is obviously easier to read/understand than that of others. In general it's easier to write code than to read/understand code of others. Developers who are founding members of a codebase are able to navigate it better vs those who come later and therefore able to work much faster. It may give them a false impression that they are genius 10x coder. Then when developer who comes later is not able to be productive, founding developer would blame it on incompetence of newer developer. But it could also be that codebase is of poor quality, but as founding developer you don't see it. It's hard to be objective about your own code. Now let's go to the reverse situation when you are spending hours "tracing state through spaghetti-like code". It could in fact be that it's actually a great code written by a 10x developer, but you are not smart enough to understand how it works. It's natural to blame someone else and not you.
dmitriy_ko··on What went wrong with the Texas power grid?
I don't think relief valve will help with freezing pipes. Freezing pipes burst because ice is less dense than water, so water expands as it turns into ice. Pipes freeze on the outside first, resulting in remaining water being entrapped in ice. As remaining water freezes, it can't move into relief valve.

carbon monoxide is CO, not CO2.
dmitriy_ko··on Deep geothermal energy is poised for a big breakout
No. There's always heat coming to earth and radiating back to space. Amount of greenhouse gases in the atmosphere determine equilibrium temperature. Adding heat doesn't change equilibrium temperature.

When you take out 401K loan, the plan sells equivalent amount of shares and gives you the cash. So it's still causing market sell off. As you pay it back the shares are bought again.
dmitriy_ko··on Remote work means anyone can take your job
Economy is not a zero-sum game. There's no reason you can't have everyone making $70K.
dmitriy_ko··on 73% Of Inmates At An Ohio Prison Test Positive For Coronavirus. 0 deaths so far
Right now around 2000 inmates are infected. If doubling time is 1 day in prison population then there were only 2 infected prisoners 10 days ago.
dmitriy_ko··on Covid-19 Antibody Seroprevalence in Santa Clara County, California
So 15% infection rate among pregnant women. I would assume pregnant women would be more careful than average about avoiding getting infected. So overall infection rate in New York City must be even higher.
dmitriy_ko··on Blue Origin pressures employees to travel to rural TX to test launch New Shepard
Nobody knows what long term effects of COVID-19 are. Those who recover still end up with reduced lung capacity. Plus this virus also attacks heart and liver, possibly leaving permanent damage to these organs.
dmitriy_ko··on Open letter from Italy to the international scientific community
Many people travel between UK and Canada.
dmitriy_ko··on Open letter from Italy to the international scientific community
There are enough honest, intelligent scientifically-minded people who want to be government leaders. They don't get elected. Current political system favors demagogues.

Elon Musk was one of the deniers. You would think someone who "always starts with physics" would know better.

Bezos named it Amazon so it would appear high in alphabetical order. In pre-search engine world of 1994 it was a big deal. New sites would be found by consumers through site directories.

dmitriy_ko··on Pinterest S-1
It's at least as useful to search Pinterest for specific terms. E.g. "wedding Pinterest" or "kitchen Pinterest". And if you look at "TERM Pinterest" trends you see same decline as well: https://trends.google.com/trends/explore?date=all&geo=US&q=w...
dmitriy_ko··on Pinterest S-1
Not nearly as pronounced as Pinterest's though.
dmitriy_ko··on Uber and Airbnb Alumni Fuel Tech’s Next Wave
"AirBnb increasing rents" is theory popularized by hotel industry and never been confirmed with hard data. AirBnb allows anyone to profit from demand for lodging, as opposed to few large hotel chains taking all profit. For many AirBnb hosts it's their livelihood. E.g. do you see benefit in anyone being able to start a restaurant or do you think only large restaurant chains should be able to do it? Also AirBnb increases tourist traffic benefiting other businesses.

dmitriy_ko··on The US spends more on healthcare for no gain says new report from Johns Hopkins
This issue existed before Obamacare 80/20 rule. In a free market the way for a profitable insurer to grow is by growing marketshare -- whether 80/20 rule exists or not. And the way to grow marketshare is to offer cheaper insurance. To offer cheaper insurance insurers have to push service prices down. Somehow this is not happening.
