dkasper··on Rethinking High-School Science Fairs
That’s not a new phenomenon. The public education system is rooted in creating factory workers for the Industrial Revolution.
dkasper··on Show HN: Moltis – AI assistant with memory, tools, and self-extending skills
You can run it with a ChatGPT subscription (or even a local model) so it can be flat fee
dkasper··on The AI boom is causing shortages everywhere else
China did it. It’s not inconceivable.
dkasper··on Two Weeks Until Tapeout
Don’t worry we have those 80 hour weeks in software too. I can think of a few examples. For example with mobile App Store review time used to be kind of like that. You submitted your app waited a few business days and prayed there wasn’t an obscure rejection that lead to an appeal which could take even longer. Very stressful when you are cueing up a launch and press releases on a certain date. you had to make sure you were done a few weeks in advance to account for everything.

I don’t work much on apps anymore but I hear it’s somewhat better now.

Another big area is compliance, those processes can take forever.

dkasper··on Ask HN: One IP, multiple unrealistic locations worldwide hitting my website
VPNs, proxies/relays, crawlers, etc
dkasper··on How I Left YouTube
Except at big tech the next level might be 500k more not 5%
dkasper··on They Don't Have the Money: OpenAI Edition
Starlink roam solves that!
dkasper··on Snapdragon X2 Elite ARM Laptop CPU
This is just a laptop cpu, not an end consumer product…
dkasper··on 'Honestly terrifying': Yosemite National Park is in chaos
The popular national parks like Yosemite do pay for themselves, so that’s how it works, it’s just run by the government instead of a corporation.
dkasper··on Sand trafficking in Latin America
Sand is heavy af. A ton is only like 20 cubic feet. Still… that’s not very much money.
dkasper··on The FAA's Real Air Traffic Control Crisis Runs Much Deeper
Makes you assume the article is also at least partially generated by AI
dkasper··on The case for letting Malibu burn (1995)
Calfair will certainly need to be bailed out. The plans has over 5B in exposure in palisades alone, and only a few hundred million in reserves.
dkasper··on The case for letting Malibu burn (1995)
Defensible housing exists, there have been some viral photos of a few houses that survived this wildfire. But the embers from large fires can fly for miles in high wind, so it would likely have to be the whole city
dkasper··on Dell will no longer make XPS computers
If it were just pro that would be one thing, but when I saw “Pro Max” I instantly thought of Apple.
dkasper··on Why America's economy is soaring ahead of its rivals
You’re forgetting lots of people rent. Lots of people can’t afford to own, and almost all of them rent. The other factor is dual, or even 3+ incomes in families living together.
dkasper··on New Windows driver signature bypass allows kernel rootkit installs
Haunted IPs are a thing, same as the haunted domains article also on the front page right now! https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=41951131
dkasper··on 1 in 6 Companies Are Hesitant to Hire Recent College Graduates
To me this sounds typical. I seem to remember people saying similar things about millennials 15 years ago. Would be curious to see a comparison.
dkasper··on Nvidia Stock Rises. AMD's New AI Chip Is Not Competitive
Sure it’s possible, but it’s also incredibly difficult.
dkasper··on The Rise of Worse Is Better (1991)
1991 tag. An all time classic.
dkasper··on WiFi4EU initiative provides free Wi-Fi in public spaces across Europe
Unpopular view perhaps, but public WiFi seems obsolete except for where cell signal can’t reach. 5G is usually faster and somewhat more secure than connecting to access points.
dkasper··on Ask HN: What do you use to backup your VMs?
What’s the use case? Production system with minimal downtime? Replicate and backup the systems individually most likely. Or snapshot the fs.
dkasper··on Show HN: Coros – A Modern C++ Library for Task Parallelism
At Meta folly::Coro is used pretty heavily. Have you taken a look at it? Wondering if there are any advantages. The api seems fairly similar to me at a glance.

dkasper··on Launch HN: Modern Realty (YC S24) – AI Real Estate Agent for Home Buyers
The fee is already 1% in a lot of places after the NAR ruling earlier this year so that arbitrage is mostly gone.
dkasper··on Telegram will now hand over phone number and IP for criminal suspects
I think you answered why the only real solutions are

a) don’t collect the data (signal approach)

b) hire an army of lawyers and compliance people (big tech approach)

c) ban users from entire countries where you don’t comply (common in crypto)

d) risk jailtime or asset forfeiture

dkasper··on AI: Markets for Lemons, and the Great Logging Off (2022)
Also known as the dead internet theory
dkasper··on Apple mobile processors are now made in America by TSMC
Maybe zero sum on a global scale but not zero sum in terms of where industry gets developed.
dkasper··on US House votes to bar new DJI drones
Obviously there is debate, but reciprocal trade and national security are the reasons.
dkasper··on Low Cost Mini PCs
depends on the project and whether it needs the speed vs the cost & power savings, same as buying an old pc
dkasper··on Ilya Sutskever's SSI Inc raises $1B
I’m sure they have a pitch deck. It’s pretty obvious a big chunk will go to compute costs for model training & research. But mostly it’s about the people in any company at this stage, same as any seed funding but on a different monetary scale.
dkasper··on Low Cost Mini PCs
I agree, might buy another pi 4 for my next project. The new chips are interesting though.
