div··on Our position on open-weights models
You’re very misinformed if you think democrats and republicans arent playing the “election influence fiddle” in exactly the same way; legitimising the elections they won, casting doubt on those they lost, all while achieving the main goal of making sure the population doesnt forget who their so called enemies are.
div··on Danish privacy activist Lars Andersen raided by police
Yes, gang members.
div··on Banned Book Library in a Wi-Fi Smart Light Bulb
While true, i don’t see how you can have one without the other.

“Fighting disinformation” is the banner under which free flow is necessarily interrupted.

div··on Why the US Navy won't blast the Iranians and 'open' Strait of Hormuz
It’s really quite amazing how the US went in without seemingly an iota of planning beyond “kill ayatollah for regime change”, but at this rate we will see US regime change before Iranian.
div··on Ask HN: Senior people, how did your career evolve?
Thinking of exploring and experimenting with some of the local-first hyped technologies.

They’re probably a long way from actually delivering on their promise, but I’m a fan of those promises.

Have a good bit of experience with offline-first solutions which many SMBs kinda need and they’re typically underserved.

div··on Ask HN: Senior people, how did your career evolve?
Mid 40s consultant here and just decided not to extend my contract as tech lead with current customer for another year.

Looking into meandering for a bit and regaining passion. Hopefully something small but sellable sprouts from that.

Looking forward to making my own decisions based on gut and not being stuck in the swamp of big company indecision.

The only sensible stance to take. All these trolls have to do is be obstructionist, see https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Merchants_of_Doubt

Software built with tax money should all be open source tbh.

div··on Assange offered pardon if he co-operated over email leak, UK court hears
That case was in sweden, and dropped by the swedish prosecutor.
div··on Open letter concerning Facebook's proposals to apply end-to-end encryption
I quite like the following analogy:

Saying privacy is unnecessary because you have nothing to hide is like saying free speech is unnecessary because you have nothing to say.

div··on Tradable and scarce digital assets on the blockchain
I also found the "A Universe Explodes - A blockchain book" a pretty cool experiment.[1]

Would be interesting to see a big game publisher like Blizzard experiment with an item trading interface built on a blockchain to really cement the feeling of ownership.

Though I suppose Blizzard in particular would be opposed to a lot of what that implies.

div··on Realm Mobile Platform – Realtime Sync Plus Fully Open Source Database
Well, I'm not sure about the pricing, but according to this page (https://realm.io/products/realm-mobile-platform/) you can host the mobile platform on-premises.

div··on Berlin is now in a position to usurp London as the startup capital of Europe
The point the article is trying to make wrt immigration is that when the UK leaves the EU, it will also leave the free movement of workers zone, making it harder to attract immigrants, regardless of how London feels about them.

div··on Facebook paid £4,327 corporation tax in the UK in 2014
I think there's a lot more grey here than you're making out.

I'm all for minimising taxes within the legal framework, but that does not mean I agree with all the legal details.

In this particular case, there is something wrong with how large multinationals are able to avoid paying any taxes at all, it's a major problem in my country, Belgium, as well.

I don't agree with your last statement that people would rather want everyone else to be equally highly taxed than lower taxes overall.

I think people just want their tax legislation to be _fair_, and while that is definitely a fungible concept, these large multinationals are crossing the line for the majority of people.

div··on Swift 2 Apps in the App Store
cmd+shift+k followed by cmd+alt+shift+k is a multiple-times-a-day incantation for me :)
div··on BitcoinEmissions – A project to calculate CO2 emissions of mining bitcoin
But there _are_ coins, wether you carry them around or not is irrelevant, someone does.
div··on Want Elon Musk to Hire You at Tesla? Work for Apple
I think it's far fetched to believe this is because people supposedly work there more.

It's probably got more to do with automakers chasing software engineers as cars start to become more like computers.

Automakers are definitely looking at Tesla and trying to emulate some things.

div··on What if journalists had story writing tools as powerful as those used by coders?
I agree that it's a cool idea ! It may be nitpicky, but I had the opposite reaction to calling it a journalism IDE.

It just seems as if the intended audience wouldn't have the faintest idea what an IDE is.

div··on TestFlight Beta Testing
I'm using both Apple TestFlight and the original TestFlight, and the original is just such a smoother experience, even with having to add UDID's to provisioning profiles.

Things that are annoying about Apple TestFlight compared to the original:

- itunesconnect, while better than before, pales in comparison to the simplicity of testflightapp

- builds submitted to Apple "take a while" before they're available, testflightapp is instant once you've uploaded.

- managing users in groups seems to be absent

div··on What Coke Contains (2013)
The article doesn't claim 0 people know what's in Coke. It claims 0 people know how to make a can of Coke, from start to finish, i.e. from mining your own raw materials to make aluminium to extracting the cocaine from the coca leaves to a finished can that can be put on a store shelve.
div··on Ant colony 'personalities' shaped by environment
Describing ant colonies as entities with a personality instantly reminded me of the dialogues between the anteater and the ant hill in Godel Escher Bach.

In it, Hofstadter likens an ant colony to the human brain, and ants to neurons in an attempt to explain how intelligence appears to be an emergent quality.
