div··on BBC staff ordered to stop giving equal airtime to climate deniers
I didn't downvote, but your comment is not pertinent.

The post to which I replied ironically stated that this is "a great victory for science", to which I responded that these people are not really participating in science (but rather playing politics).

Your comment on banning Songs of Praise seems to imply that I'd like all non-scientific TV to be curbed or banned, which is a straw man argument.

The other side is not being completely blackballed, they just get less airtime.

Also, some of the dissenters on this particular issue have a vested economic interest in their dissent, and are not really looking for truth.

These people do not participate in science.

Putting them in the same group as other conspiracy theorists is putting them where they belong.
div··on Troubled welds on the Bay Bridge
Odd. I've been involved in a few government bidding processes in Europe, and detailing past projects was always a major part of what we'd get graded on.
div··on The Mobile Downturn
My girlfriend does everything on her iPhone 5c.

From the occasional glances, she's mostly doing one of these:

1. Playing a game

2. Browsing on online clothing shops, both mobile websites and native apps

3. Keeping up with friends and colleagues via Whatsapp

4. Pinterest

5. Facebook

So I'd say most of her time is spent in native apps.

edit: linebreaks

div··on Navy tests rail gun
Wikipedia has a good writeup of the Millenium Challenge 2002 wargames, where a large fleet was basically destroyed by assymetrical guerilla tactics (small boats, low tech communication):

div··on Email (let's drop the hyphen) (2003)
Email is the French / German / Dutch word for enamel.

Of course the pronounciation is very different.

div··on Announcing Two Scoops of Django 1.6
Agreed, I really don't like physical technical books. If an epub was available, I would have spent the time writing this comment by filling out my credit card details in stead.
div··on Improve Your Python: Metaclasses and Dynamic Classes With Type
As luck would have it, I just bought and read "Writing Idiomatic Python" earlier today.

It's a quick read and seems to be a nice shortcut to avoid a few newbie pitfalls (I'm a Python newbie myself).

div··on Self-driving cars projected to reduce injuries by 90%, save $450B annually
There's no reason for a self-driving car to prioritise adhering to the speed limit over avoiding a collision though.

Any sufficiently advanced self-driving AI will try to avoid being rear-ended like that. Even better, when a collision is unavoidable, an AI has a much better chance at making the 'right' decision as to how to crash.

div··on Tessel: The end of web development as we know it
Great slidedeck. Most of the comments here seem to be missing the point that step 1 of 'the plan' is to make hardware more accessible.

With that background, complaining about javascript is a very "No wireless. Less space than a nomad. Lame." remark.

I haven't dabbled with any microcontrollers before, but if I ever felt like it, Tessel would be on top of my list of things to try.

div··on Tessel: The end of web development as we know it
Well, you'll have a Tessel microcontroller with an array of pluggable sensors, each with their own little node module to drive them over http.

Slides 45 to 51 illustrate the idea.

div··on SteamOS
I have a spare Pi laying around, and I'm hopeful at least. According to the SteamOS page there's a streaming mode where you basically do the processing on your Desktop / Server, and SteamOS just takes care of input and streaming.

Fingers crossed !

div··on iOS App Store now allows legacy downloads to support older OSes
Correct, what I'm wondering about is how this popup will drive people to realize that "hey, I can upgrade to a new version of iOS".

iOS already has a pretty fast adoption rate for new versions, I wonder if this will make it even better.

div··on iOS App Store now allows legacy downloads to support older OSes
That's something you've always had to worry about though. You can't force a user to upgrade, so your best bet is to handle those issues server-side.
div··on iOS App Store now allows legacy downloads to support older OSes
This is great for customers.

I wonder if and how having that popup appear will affect people upgrading to the latest and greatest.

div··on Warning: Google Authenticator upgrade loses all accounts
iOS7 beta automatically updated my Google Authenticator. The 'updated app' indicator is taunting me.
div··on Google's Sergey Brin explains why he paid $330,000 for lab burger
You're missing a few zeroes ;)
div··on Sergey Brin invests in synthetic beef
Does women being allowed to vote make anything better if you're a man ?

If this could become a viable alternative to regular meat, it has the capability of reducing a massive amount of suffering.

div··on Ask HN: Should I learn Rails without a Mac?
In a pinch, Windows will do, but your best option is probably to find a nice Linux distro and get comfortable with that. It will allow you to follow along with the command line, and when the time comes, it's an easy switch to a Mac.
div··on "Accidentally" Freelance
If that's the case, it sounds like you're either not charging enough, or don't have enough work lined up.

Striking out on your own means you take on more risk in exchange for a LOT more potential upside.

div··on Be The Obnoxious Needy Junior Programmer
False dichotomy.

It's perfectly possible to sponge up knowledge from Sr. Engineers, while picking up different bits of knowledge from people who are in different roles altogether.

div··on Boxee Acquired By Samsung For Around $30M
I have a D-Link Boxee, and it just got less and less stable over time. I switched to XBMC (openelec) on a Raspberry Pi a while back and haven't looked back.

As a bonus, XBMC interfaces with your TV's remote over hdmi, so you won't even need an extra remote, very wife / gf friendly.

div··on 22 American nuclear bombs are stored in The Netherlands
Cablegate pretty much confirmed the (until then assumed) storage of US nuclear weapons in Kleine Brogel, Belgium.
div··on EFF Makes Formal Objection to DRM in HTML5
Because then the standards would no longer be open.
div··on A new Gmail inbox
I have a similar system, but yours does take things a step further. I'll definitely feel like wasting an hour sometime revising my own setup :)

That said, I think you pretty much hit the nail on the head. If the automatic filtering is done well, it will be a killer feature for normal users.

From glancing over her shoulder, I know my girlfriend has hundreds, if not thousands of unread mails, most of which would probably end up in the promotions tab.

I'm positive this change will make it much easier for her to check her email at a glance.

div··on Flickr's redesign makes it a photo service actually worth sharing
Apparently, deep integration with Flickr is slated for iOS 7:

http://9to5mac.com/2013/05/21/flickr-vimeo-integration-likel...

I'm curious to see to which extent it will be.

div··on iOS internationalization from day one
Hmm. This comment shows up fine indeed. HN works in mysterious ways sometimes.
div··on iOS internationalization from day one
Potatolicious, you seem to be hell-banned even though you made the most valuable comment:

"There really is no excuse for not internationalizing your codebase from day one. Even if you intend to be English-only at the beginning, wrapping your strings in NSLocalizedString is just good form. It also separates your app's copy from your codebase. If your shop isn't purely staffed with programmers, it allows you to hand off a file to someone who is better at writing copy and have them edit it without assistance from you. Internationalization is easy too - there are shops out there that offer translation services that plug neatly into iOS. You literally upload a string file and they will hand back a string file translated into the language of your choice. I've used Tethras in the past with a good experience (all except the Greek translations... whoever they're farming the Greek out to is awful)."
