digerata··on Ask HN: What to do when someone clones your site?
I have to disagree with both comments on this... That was my first thought as well. But looking at the screenshots in the Twitter post, it goes beyond design systems. Structurally, it's the same. Layout, it's the same. Purpose, it's the same.
digerata··on How restaurant workers help pay for lobbying to keep their wages low

I'm not sure what "de facto $0 wage" means.

digerata··on Ask HN: Anyone go through Montessori education until age 12 (end of grade 6)?
I have two kids in it, one 11 year old boy and one 8 year old girl. The school we were in switched to Montessori 4 years ago. The younger loves it. The older very much dislikes the open nature of the school day and struggles to complete tasks. His teacher has had to modify and provide him with much more structure than you would normally receive. You might say that’s because he didn’t start in Montessori from the beginning. But knowing my child, I think Montessori doesn’t work for some kids, in the same way rigid traditional schools don’t work for others.
digerata··on FTX to file for U.S. bankruptcy, CEO resigns
He was running a Ponzi scheme. Don't feel sorry for him.
digerata··on Falcon Heavy Launch [video]
I think two rockets landing at the same time, in unison, more accurately displays the fact both are under computer control.

One landing could just be some person steering it. But two?

digerata··on IOx: InfluxData’s New Storage Engine
Personally, very excited to see this happening. Huge congrats!

Some constructive criticism around naming... You don't have to have Flux in every single damn thing you create!

InfluxDB IOx is not replacing InfluxDB v2 because... It's just a new storage engine.

For querying we have Flux or InfluxQL...

digerata··on What the $24.6B Kroger-Albertsons Merger Could Mean for Groceries
As a frequent Kroger customer, my immediate gut reaction was no way should this happen.

But then looking further, how much geographic overlap is there between the two companies? Not much from my quick search. Certainly not in the area I live.

And a stated goal of this merger is to fight the evil empire, Walmart. So I'm warming up to it...

digerata··on Scrumdog – a program to download Jira Issues to a local database
No explanation necessary. Anyone that has followed Atlassian in the news knows that downloading Jira Issues is an excellent idea!
digerata··on US Army's Land Trains (2020)
Isn’t saying “Land Train” like saying “Sky Plane”?
digerata··on Atlassian: We estimate the rebuilding effort to last for up to 2 more weeks
I will say that back when Bugzilla was it, JIRA rocked. It was amazing the new power you had and the functionality it provided.

We self-hostd JIRA from 2008ish to 2014ish. (memory is fading on exact dates) By the time we decided to stop using JIRA, we fracking hated JIRA and would never return.

Since then, GitHub Issues, Trello, Clubhouse (neé Shortcut) all provide less friction in day to day use. As an Enterprise, I do believe Shortcut is your best bet.

digerata··on Ask HN: What happened to Clubhouse?
The worst part of all this is that clubhouse.io changed their name to some stupid thing that doesn't make any sense and they didn't need to. They could have just waited out the hype.
digerata··on Heroku was Down
Well, they aren't completely down now either. Heroku Shield is up. Dashboard is up. EU is reported as up.

As an aside, I spoke with our AE in early January on where they are going in dealing with AWS unreliability. One would think they would have a good answer. They don't.

digerata··on Heroku was Down
Ahh... were you sleeping in 2021? They went down in September, November, and December. Probably some other times earlier in the year as well. I stopped keeping track at how bad their service is because of how bad AWS's service is.
digerata··on Heroku was Down
Ours are up. US East. Heroku Shield.

digerata··on Why China's electric car industry is leaving Detroit, Japan, Germany in the dust
China's push for electrification of transportation is admirable and worth praising.

But this article is vapid click bait with nothing backing up its headline. The manufacturing of cheap junk that doesn't meet safety or reliability standards and stealing IP to bypass research and development is hardly leaving established car companies in the dust.

digerata··on Apple starts rejecting apps with “hot code push” features
Yeah, this seems crazy that anyone would build a business on this.

For those curious about their justification:

digerata··on SpaceX concludes anomaly investigation, sets return to flight target date
I believe that it's very likely that SpaceX can recover the helium used during operation. The helium isn't expelled from the fuel tanks. Since the 1st stage returns, it could be recovered.
digerata··on Update On The HydraDock Project Status
Reminds me of ZenDock, another failed kickstarter laptop dock.

https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/coleflournoy/zendock-th...

Sounds like HydraDock might be handling it better than Cole Flournoy did, however.

digerata··on Axial stack battery design could unlock the era of supersonic electric airliners
Wings flex while in flight. Either the cells need to handle that stress or the wing needs to be super rigid. Neither is particularly easy to achieve.
digerata··on Axial stack battery design could unlock the era of supersonic electric airliners
I don't believe he was intending the plane to fly supersonic. Instead he was talking about using the design of the wings because they have a larger volume.
digerata··on Ask HN: teaching basic coding and web design offline, solely via iOS devices?
I have mentored two middle schoolers in an independent study using Codea. https://codea.io/ It's great for that immediate feedback loop when starting out.

If you weren't using iOS, love2d is great, as well.

digerata··on Benefits of a single US electrical grid with high-voltage direct current
The forth paragraph in that link really sums up the difference for my poor brain:

"One advantage of direct current over AC is that DC current penetrates the entire conductor as opposed to AC current which only penetrates to the so-called skin depth. For the same conductor size the effective resistance is greater with AC than DC, so that more power is lost as heat. In general the power losses for HVDC are less than an AC line if the line length is over 500 -600 miles and with advances in conversion technology this distance has been reduced considerably."

digerata··on Benefits of a single US electrical grid with high-voltage direct current
I was initially confused by the statement that direct current has lower transmission losses over long distances.

My recollection was that a big argument for AC over DC going back to Edison v Tesla was that DC required DC generation centers all over the place because of transmission range:

"The primary drawback with the Edison direct current system was that it ran at 110 volts from generation to its final destination giving it a relatively short useful transmission range: to keep the size of the expensive copper conductors down generating plants had to be situated in the middle of population centers and could only supply customers less than a mile from the plant."

Source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/War_of_Currents#Edison.27s_DC_...

Yet, it appears this is no longer the case. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/High-voltage_direct_current

Why is that?

digerata··on ULA bows out of Pentagon launch competition, paving way for SpaceX
One ULA reason for dropping out:

"the Air Force used a procurement process that would give a lot of weight to the prices companies bid"

That's hysterical! The gall of the Air Force to do such a thing!

digerata··on Heroku Review Apps Beta
Seems awesome. I couldn't see from the blog post, but how does it handle loading development data sets?
digerata··on SpaceX – Pad abort test successful
What blows me away is comparing the acceleration of a fully loaded Falcon 9 and today's test. Obviously, the two are different and you know the acceleration will be different to escape a failure of the rocket.

But to see something so small with relatively little fuel on board, take off so fast is really incredible.

digerata··on Tesla Energy
You don't need to obtain a permit to upgrade your countertops.

I believe the only time that an upgrade could possibly increase the taxable value of your house is if the township/county knows about it (I.e., you got a permit to install it).

I also live in Michigan, but haven't researched renewable energy sources vs taxable value. I'm surprised to hear the gp say they had an increase.
