dia80··on The Crown Estate
By "fill their pockets" I mean actively engage in political corruption. The royal families relatively static wealth makes little difference in the grand scheme. The £85m figure from the crown estate mentioned in this article is 0.1% of government spending.

I didn't mean to suggest the royal family are unimpeachable beacons of virtue but that their primary motivations are different to politicians in a way that benefits the country.

dia80··on The Crown Estate
How would you say democracy has been performing lately in the English speaking world? Yes, the royal family is wealthy by birth but it's a tiny fraction of national wealth and the country gets something in return e.g. stability, some shared identity, soft power, tourism. I think British people mainly want to avoid another grubby scramble for political power by the unfit who then proceed to try and push ideology and fill their own pockets.

I'll take the royals, who have been raised to have sense of duty and know they need to project the impression of service, over president Blair/Boris any day.

dia80··on Superdeterminism could reconcile quantum and relativity
Wouldn't it be funny if it were established no one had any free will, in a strict sense, all along. We'd still feel like we had it but know that we didn't.

From this layman's emotional point of view I never really liked "many worlds" and that sort of thing. I'd be quite accepting if the answer turns out to be super-determinism.

Deflation. The price of the burger in BTC has largely been falling. Why spend your appreciating* bitcoins when they will bu worth more tomorrow. If the price is stable this effect goes away and you might as well spend them.

The postal system runs on post codes. It's a 5-8 letter code that usually identifies 1-20 ish addresses. You usually only need a door number and and a postcode to uniquely identify an address. There is free reverse look up as well.

Rather error prone but it was starboard & larboard before the Royal Navy changed larboard to port. Although larboard related to loading so your reasoning was correct.

The opinions on consultants in the thread is largely negative and it's suggested hiring them is a sign of organisational dysfunction. If you can find information on consulting spend in annual reports you could create a "consultant factor" for stocks and see if big spenders underperform.

I think Color Labs was close. While I'm sure they shared a plan with VCs I remember a lot or surprise that they had raised so much cash pre-launch.

Enjoying my moonlander [1] which I bought after reading about it on HN. I went the whole hog and switched to a colemak variant as well. Typing speed is still far from my peak but feel I'm on track to a longer term pay off. The configuration software is pretty impressive too.

dia80··on Wheelmap.org - A map of wheelchair accessible places
This is fantastic but I think you need more detail on the toilets. Just because it lacks one of the features you list doesn't mean it's useless. There are relatively few accessible places in London so you can't be too choosey. I have a spinal cord injury and, for technical reasons I won't go into, basically a little privacy is enough.

I added the place in having a beer at right now. Thanks again for making this!

I saw the article refers to the Prenda Law saga, I just looked it up and saw the main protagonists had been sent to jail. This line from Wikipedia made me chuckle as sounds like the exactly like a game of the prisoners dilema

In 2019, Steele and Hansmeier both pleaded guilty in Federal court to a range of criminal charges related to and including extortion and fraudulent conduct, with substantial sums of their criminal proceeds to be reimbursed. Steele received a reduced sentence of 5 years due to his cooperation and Hansmeier, who had not cooperated, was sentenced to 14 years. [13]

Not under the UK definition. Insider trading requires material non-public information. Being in news media means information is now public. However disclosing such information is also an offence. So it's not like you can tweet the info and trade on it now it's public.

Even if the information appeared in a paid subscription publication it is considered public as long as anyone could subscribe to it and it's not prohibitively expensive.

dia80··on The Looming Bank Collapse
My bad, I missed that. Still I don't think your are going to see a meaningful fraction of highly rated CLO tranches default.
dia80··on The Looming Bank Collapse
The "haircut" on risky assets stops you leveraging it too much. I think it's about 5% for US treasury bonds. So for every 100 I want to finance I need to have 5 cash on hand. Itsuch higher for riskier assets and that keeps leverage down. Also when things start to get edgy banks demand a bigger haircut further reducing the available leverage forcing you to delever (e.g. March)
dia80··on The Looming Bank Collapse
Meh, the article doesn't mention recovery rates. If a loan defaults it's not usual you are getting 0 back. Typically 30-40% is the assumed rate. That means if all the loans default then the top 30% of tranches shouldn't take a loss.

So now consider, most of the underlying loans have to default and the recovery rate has to be below battle tested assumptions before the top tiers get risky. This is very very unlikely to happen given the Fed and the US Govt. have done so much and are committed to do more to stave off a severe depression / recession. It's more like people were killing it buying the safer parts at distressed prices as over leveraged funds shed them on the back of margin calls in March.
