dhuk_2018··on MacBook Neo
Good question... I wonder if the 5G chipset adds significantly to the price? IP licensing?
dhuk_2018··on What do wealthy people buy, that ordinary people know nothing about? (2015)
Can you further explain this?
dhuk_2018··on The US Stock Market as a Quasi-Ponzi Scheme
I believe the US stock market has become too big to fail. Which is one of the reasons why the central bank has stepped in, to stabilize and essentially prop it up. Too many American investors have their life savings in it, and if the bottom falls out, the pitchforks will be coming for those (who think they are) in power.
dhuk_2018··on Carnarvon's NASA satellite dish receives first signal in almost 40 years
This goes back to the "olden days", we'd call them optics because there's a lens, an aperture, focus, waveguides, etc. Newer antennas actually DO have fiber optics (RF over fiber) conversion so you don't have to deal with waveguides and/or coaxial cables, just convert right to fiber at the feed.

Why not use lithium AA? Duracell aklaleaks are the worse, in my experience. At least if the alkalines do leak, they're in a carrier away from the MB.
dhuk_2018··on Taking low-dose aspirin is associated with 20% reduction in cancer deaths
Tomorrow's news will say it will be a 20% increase in some other desease...
dhuk_2018··on New JWST data confirms, worsens the Hubble tension
THANK YOU. I was feeling dumber after reading it, not smarter.
dhuk_2018··on Have you been to the library lately?
Don't worry, we're opening another pseudo day shelter in NoBo!
dhuk_2018··on Ask HN: Why is everybody copying layoffs?
All of the above, plus:

E) We f*cked up and hired too many so we'll blame it on the economy.

dhuk_2018··on FAA Continues to Stall on G100UL
GAMI would probably have to license the tech to the big boys for production in high volumes.
dhuk_2018··on FAA Continues to Stall on G100UL
While I'm not disagreeing, according to WikiPedia the amount of 100LL sold per year is 0.14% of that of MoGas (2008). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Avgas#Consumption Shell, Exxon, etc. probably see AvGas as a pain.
dhuk_2018··on Jack Dorsey says he agrees with reversing Trump's Twitter ban
Wonder if they're trying to bait him away from Truth Social (his failing competitor platform)
dhuk_2018··on Russian Aviation Has About Three Weeks Before It’s Show Over
Yes. In the US, all of the FAA charts and descriptions expire after a few weeks and it is not legal to fly with them, in order to keep everyone current. I'm guessing other governments have similar rules.
dhuk_2018··on Are We Really Engineers? (2021)
Don't get me started with "network engineer"...
dhuk_2018··on Bouncing a LoRa message off the moon
Hams around the world are already bouncing signals off the moon with a lot less power and gain, using modern signal processing techniques.
dhuk_2018··on Some Whales Can Eat Upwards of 16 Tons of Tiny Shrimp a Day
Sadly, shrimp are all now made of plastic.
dhuk_2018··on The Zen of Weight Lifting
This, and definitely watch the Starting Strength YouTube channel...

dhuk_2018··on The Graphics Gremlin – An Open Source Retro ISA Video Card
Lots of server IPMI interfaces do this. IDK of an add-on card for old computers though...
dhuk_2018··on Degoogling My Life
Seems like very few months these pop up. Sure, it seems like a good idea. Then I try it. It sucks when you've been embedded with Google for a long time. Glad I'm not on Facebook...
dhuk_2018··on Nuclear lighthouses built by the Soviets in the Arctic [video]
RTGs are also used on a lot of US and Russian deep space missions...
dhuk_2018··on Investors double down on stocks, pushing margin debt to record
Holding a single options contract is no more or less risky than holding 100 shares of that same underlying stock... if you know what you are doing. The problem is, people don't know what they're doing and make oversized trades that get them into trouble.
dhuk_2018··on Consider getting a “DIY” degree online instead of a traditional CS major
"Look for things that are hot, but relatively unknown."

What?

dhuk_2018··on San Francisco real estate going to collapse: Angel investor Calacanis
Can't help but wonder, is this going to be like offshoring, where we thought it was a good idea, but it only works for some tasks and companies? Will we go through a phase of globalization of hiring (for remote) then pull back into onsite?
