dhughes··on I'm completely demotivated to work; what can I do?
I shouldn't say or at least didn't mean a lot of money is the only way to be happy, yes finding something you love to do and your family is able to live a good life is the goal.

Education is a great character builder I often see educated people in stressful situations far more calm than someone who worked all their lives wit no education other than high school. It's not a science it doesn't apply every time but education gives you options, if you lose your job at a sawmill where you worked since age 16 you're going to be stressed. Sooner or later we all figure this out but it's better to discover that at age 18 than 49.

dhughes··on Ubuntu desktop moving application menus back into application windows
Years ago when Ubuntu Netbook Edition remix first came out I actually liked Unity on a netbook and put it on a desktop PC but then realized I hated it on a full size desktop PC.

It's the same with Win 8 Metro I thought it looked great on mobile phones and on a desktop PC or laptop PC but looks versus using are two different things!

dhughes··on I'm completely demotivated to work; what can I do?
They way I think about it is you can work a dead end job for 80 hours per week making $8 an hour to make enough to survive and not have any free time to socialize, go to the gym or be with family. Or study for and try to get a decent job you like that pays half decent so you don't have to become a human eraser and wear yourself down doing the work of others. Having many skills to fall back on is great but trying to learn everything losing focus and never finishing anything isn't much help.

Or realize you need to focus and find a career that you like and is wanted by employers. I recall years ago they mentioned "The fear" and it is a great example of suddenly realizing shit I better start getting good at this life thing, now!

Time is shorter than you think your health can suddenly rapidly fail, saving for retirement is a constant worry. Time is so short it's as if nothing you do can be done soon enough. Realizing that early in life is fantastic. A big part of life I think is having mentors who are examples to follow it's good to have a person who you can think "What would Bob do?" as an internal guide.

It's easy to say all that but hard to do, I haven't mastered that yet.

dhughes··on Lack of exercise kills roughly as many as smoking, study says
OK then, but that works both ways if I can't prove it's not totally good paleo diet proponents can't prove it's super healthy.
dhughes··on How north ended up on top of the map
Etymology Online has an interesting description for the word north:

"...possibly ultimately from PIE ner- "left," also "below," as north is to the left when one faces the rising sun..."*

It's pretty much arguing over our ancestors saying "to the left" in reference to the rising sun.

dhughes··on Lack of exercise kills roughly as many as smoking, study says
No but it seems paleo diet enthusiasts indicate any heart disease was non-existent due to a paleo diet.

The so-called "LOREN CORDAIN, PH.D., THE WORLD’S LEADING EXPERT ON PALEOLITHIC DIETS AND FOUNDER OF THE PALEO MOVEMENT" claims:

Decades of research by Dr. Loren Cordain and his scientific colleagues demonstrate that hunter-gatherers typically were free from the chronic illnesses and diseases that are epidemic in Western populations, including:

Obesity Cardiovascular disease (heart disease, stroke, high blood pressure, congestive heart failure, atherosclerosis) Type 2 diabetes Cancer Autoimmune diseases (multiple sclerosis, rheumatoid arthritis, Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, etc.) Osteoporosis Acne Myopia (nearsightedness), macular degeneration, glaucoma Varicose veins, hemorrhoids, diverticulosis, gastric reflux Gout

dhughes··on Lack of exercise kills roughly as many as smoking, study says
The 5,000 year old "ice man" scientists have named Otzi had heart disease so I'd call the paleo diet healthy is misinformation.

dhughes··on A 33-Year-Old NPR Story Convinced Me Google Glass Will Stop Looking So Dorky
It was the same with cellphones.

My uncle likes to tell a story of when (sometime before 1985) he had his brick phone and was talking on it in the entrance of a K-Mart.

He was leaning up against a wall back to everyone trying to be discreet with the new fangled invention of a cell phone.

As he was talking an elderly women was lurking behind him, he could hear her looking through her change purse. He said he realized she was waiting for the pay phone she thought he was using.

He left abruptly leaving nothing but the empty space and the wall and shocked the woman who couldn't seem to grasp where the pay phone went.

A judge by definition impartial/neutral, that's the point of a judge.

That's frightening that France and Belgium have the need of a special judge called a neutral judge.

>A black hole that would survive the entire trip would have a radius of 0.9 attometers, would have a mass of 606,000 tonnes, and a power output of 160 petawatts. The lifespan of the black hole could be extended by feeding it mass, too.

dhughes··on How Radians Work in 30 Seconds
Similar and it's the gist of it. Understanding something well enough to teach it to someone who doesn't, some people seem to be able to learn enough to get by but not teach others what they are supposed to know.
dhughes··on How Radians Work in 30 Seconds
I muddled through it learning electronics not realizing I was not quite understanding it, this helps.

Who was it that said something along the lines of " If you can describe a complex thing to someone briefly in simple terms that shows knowledge" Feynman? Einstein?

Whoever said that I find it profound because most people can learn something eventually but to know something, knowledge, I find close to impossible, very hard.

dhughes··on OS X Mavericks kernel_task eating 100% CPU
Another (much more) common issue which seems to be related to Mavericks is the Finder problem where clicking Finder results a sudden hang of the system a the spinning colour wheel.

I'm fairly new to Apple products (~2 years ago) this is the worst problem so far but I'm surprised at such little feedback from Apple on it.

dhughes··on 3 Million Teens Leave Facebook In 3 Years: The 2014 Facebook Demographic Report
ctrl+F "mobile" you are the only person to mention it.

I can't see any reason why anyone these days let alone very (also) mobile teens would want to be on a service such as Facebook that seems to me so static and verbose.

CBC Radio here in Canada had a professor on who studied people in their early 20s at the university and one incident they mentioned was a class where students had to call businesses to ask about a wanted ads. These students were so unaccustomed to speaking on a telephone they were terrified to the point where some quit the class rather than speak to someone on the phone.

I think young people, say under 30, use Twitter and Snapchat and whatever IM service etc. as their means of communication not as a social entertainment; it's their sole means of communicating. To them it's an essential service a way to communicate so some ad filled overly complicated website is useless to them.

dhughes··on PSA: Back Up Your Shit
Pictures are the worst for backing up, actually no backing up someone else's pictures is worse.

Parents for example, my mom takes a lot of pictures she wants to keep I take lots of pictures I don't care about.

Semi-wheneverly when I manage to get the card from the parent's camera or cellphone to back up it's usually a mess of I backed up 63% of these so which ones are new. Is IMG0003.JPG the same as IMG0003.JPG I saved already wait no one is 2MB and the other is 3.25MB.

Meld helps but it's the same thing what do I have and what is new and what is different with the same name but is different which I just happen to notice due to the file size.

So I end up dumping it all onto something or multiple somethings and swear I'll figure it out next time. Goto step 1.

dhughes··on Stephen Colbert urged to cancel speech for RSA
Yes I agree let him speak there.

It's like the reverse incidents where students at some universities demand controversial speakers not be allowed to speak at their university as if censoring a speech is a victory.

Let people speak and if what they say is wrong then debate it to show what's wrong don't hide it or hide from it.

dhughes··on Engineer: Egyptians built pyramids by piling rubble and attaching bricks later
Were they slaves? I've often seen reference that they were citizens working on the pyramid as payment of taxes in the form of manual labour, add to that your boss and the building were being built for, who to them was, a God.

I'd say whatever the most simple explanation is the answer I could see either rubble or ramps.
