dholowiski··on What it looks like to process 3.5M books in Google’s cloud
Nope, there was almost no mention of what this was actually used for. The closest I found was a mention of the final output:

"single output files, tab-delimited with data available for each year, merging in publication metadata and other information about each book"

[edit] More info in a link at the bottom of the article: http://blog.gdeltproject.org/3-5-million-books-1800-2015-gde...

dholowiski··on Let artificial intelligence guess your attractiveness and age
Well, it was way off on my age, but it correctly gendered me ad female. Which I find quite impressive as I am a transgender woman, I've only been on hormones for 4 months, and most humans aren't even correctly gendering in me yet.

More than anything, I'm curious to know what features it was that registered me as female. Was it as simple as the long hair, or some complicated subtle mix of many small details?

dholowiski··on UltraDNS Server Problem Pulls Down Websites, Including Netflix, for 90 Minutes
Surprisingly, no. Or at least they're not claiming so. They say it was a problem with a database server. http://status.bitbucket.org/
dholowiski··on Amazon Snowball
Using the calculator for that service, I put in 50TB and 25 hard drives, and the estimated charges came out to $2435.75. The point where snowball is cheaper is fairly low. 4TB on 2 drives is 194.86. Basically more than 5TB over 2 or more drives and it's cheaper to use snowball. Plus you have to pay to have the drives returned back to you.
dholowiski··on Individuals with social phobia have too much serotonin
So, you clearly do not have social phobia. Yes, it is a legitimate disorder, and it can be quite disabling when it's severe.

It's not about not being able to speak in public. Imagine suffering from panic attacks and not being able to leave your house for days, because you're afraid someone will say hi to you. That's social anxiety.

Your attitude "STOP IT. tell them to fit in" is the reason many people with social anxiety, and many other psychiatric disorders end up committing suicide.

dholowiski··on A Startup That Wants to Cure Social Anxiety
And it's $99 a month.
dholowiski··on Ceres RC3 Animation: Bright spots revealed to be composed of many smaller spots
> What happens next depends on if there are living aliens there, or just an old city.

But, when that mission arrives to inspect the lights, couldn't we expect that contact with alien technology, even if it is just an alien laser, to profoundly change our science?

dholowiski··on Entrepreneurial Tendencies Among People with ADHD
Because they only have to live long enough to reproduce. There are studies showing people with adhd have a much higher risk of accidental (and non accidental) death.

Adhd is not a superpower. It's an incurable brain disorder. It fucking sucks.

dholowiski··on The Serotonin Levels-Depression Link Is a 'Marketing Myth,' Psychiatrist Claims
Pretty much the same here. Its easy to downplay depression or anxiety, but SSRIs are a literal lifesaver for many people, myself included.
dholowiski··on Have you heard 'the hum'? Mystery of Earth's low droning noise solved?
Exact same story here. I wonder if it was this.
dholowiski··on $149 Chromebooks
Yup, as a Canadian, apparently I'm not part of 'everyone'.
dholowiski··on Google Cloud Platform free for 60 days
I've used Google support in 3 different areas:

1 Google apps (paid), there is a phone number to call. I spent several hours on the phone with a very knowledgeable person helping me troubleshoot a sync issue.

2 Hardware, my android watch died. I called the Google play support number, again talked to a very knowledgeable person who gave me a couple of troubleshooting steps, and then promptly replaced the watch.

3 Google adwords. We regularly talk to people at Google adwords, regarding billing and support issues. I also work with people who speak with support people for Google places (or my business or whatever they're calling it today)

In my experience, Google tech support is great when it's for a product you're paying for. That would be my concern getting 60 days free here... If I was using this for business (and not just messing around) I'd rather just pay for it and know I can get support.

dholowiski··on Help Me HN: I am getting overwhelmed
Why would that be safe to assume? Most of us don't use use usd, just a small, vocal minority.
dholowiski··on Ask HN: Have you ever written docs for an open source project you're new to?
Not for an unfamiliar project. But I have written a bit, for projects i Use. In the past I contributed to the WordPress documentation because I was using it crazy. Recently I contributed to the Chef documentation because I was using & learning it, and found a mistake in the documentation.

I would say if you want to contribute to the documentation, actually use the software (even just in a test environment) and look for holes in the documentation... little pain points like that really important thing they forgot to tell you about installing it, or additional things like how to back up the data.

Just like contributing code, don't try to write big parts on your own at first. Look for little things to fix; missing words, incorrect logic etc.

dholowiski··on Intel Compute Stick
But, it doesn't exist. This will be interesting, when it exists.
dholowiski··on Do you log with docker? What tools do you use? What are best practices?
I use docker in production, for a rails app. I used it because it lives on a server with other web sites and I find it a pain to install, configure and manage ruby and rails with nginx, so it was very appealing to have that all in a container and not have to worry about it.

But now I'm suffering from a year old docker bug on centos, and it's more of a pain than if i wasn't using it.

I'm sure its mostly my lack of knowledge, but my personal opinion of docker is 'not ready for production, yet'.

There is also a horrendous lack of documentation on the specifics of configuring docker for production, so you pretty much have to figure it out on your own.

dholowiski··on Ask HN: Managed bare-metal hosting recommendation
I've been using a dedicated server from liquidweb for about 3 years to serve several high traffic Web sites at work. The only problems I've ever had with it are ones I've caused. You can pretty much get any level of 'managed' that you want, which is nice. They are not a 'cheap' host though. My server is about $230 a month. But it's worth every penny, and more.
dholowiski··on Atlantic.net launches $0.99 SSD-based VPS servers
That's good... the cron job thing (which is bizzare by the way) is a show stopper for me but if that changes I'll be spinning up several servers for sure.
dholowiski··on Ask HN: What is your favorite keyboard for a mac?
I have a Kinesis Freestyle 2 keyboard, it's pretty great. I also emailed them off and on for weeks asking them questions about their keyboards, the people there are great too.
dholowiski··on Ask HN: Google search results
My Co worker and I have been talking about this for a while. If someone is getting the information they need (and it comes from out site), but they never leave Google, how do we measure the impact of that?
dholowiski··on Amazon releases new Kindle products
> The Kindle Voyager fixes the biggest complaint I have with the Paperwhite: page turning via touching the screen is worse than the physical buttons on older-gen Kindles

I agree. This makes the upgrade to the voyager an immediate purchase for me. As soon as they decide to make it available in Canada :(

dholowiski··on Ask HN: What VPS are you using?
Can you expand a bit on your experience with ramnode? The prices look great. Is it reliable, and do you get the performance you expect from them?
dholowiski··on Is Sublime still alive?
I paid for it, as did my co-worker. We both use it for development. I strongly suspect that most people who use it at their job pay for it.
dholowiski··on SIREn – Enhanced Structured Data Search for Solr and Elasticearch
Me too! (I'm a customer). These guys are brilliant, and the science behind what they do is (usually) way over my head.
dholowiski··on Teardown: DDC Mobile X900
And a 320x240 pixels camera. That's over 70,000 pixels! Imagine how many photos you could fit on a 32gb memory card!
dholowiski··on Rarely Used Postgres Datatypes
While I don't disagree with the coolness of uuid, how exactly do you 'run out of integers' ?
dholowiski··on Show HN: Simple Dashboards for Internet-Connected Devices
I ran in to the same thing.

I just downloaded freeboard and I'm running it locally on http, no problem.

dholowiski··on Show HN: Simple Dashboards for Internet-Connected Devices
But... this could be the front end for Zabbix measurements!
dholowiski··on Show HN: Simple Dashboards for Internet-Connected Devices
Wow. This is exactly what I've been looking for. A dashboard for my 'stuff' - which is basically anything as long as it's JSON.

Thanks!

dholowiski··on Dirt Cheap Dirty Boards
The url is http://dirtypcbs.com/ and the title on the page is "Dirt Cheap Dirty Boards" and the tag-line is 'No bull, just crappy PCBs'.

I get that they're trying to convey 'quick and dirty', but they're only saying the dirty, crappy part of it, and de-emphasizing the cheap and easy. To me it says not environmentally friendly crap.

It's totally their marketing decision to make though. It would be interesting to see them comment about this, and what their rationale was in choosing the name (it could be that this was extremely well tested and researched).

I'll be using them, anyway!
