dhechols··on I am a statistician and I buy lottery tickets
> So why do I still buy lottery tickets? Definitely not for the expected monetary return on investment. I think of it as a discretionary entertainment spend. I get literally hours of enjoyment from fantasizing what I’d do if I won.

Why not spend it on hookers and blow instead? THINK OF ALL THE FUN YOU'LL HAVE. :|

dhechols··on DeployButton is the simplest and fastest way to get code on your server
What does this do that running a Jenkins server couldn't do?
dhechols··on Ask HN: Your best passive income sources?
Last February I started a small YouTube channel surrounding eSports called DrZealotTV. http://youtube.com/DrZealotTV

Although it hasn't even broken even, I'm now equipped with a ton of expertise and I have a few efforts I'm working on that I think will be quite popular. :)

dhechols··on Space isn't ours.
And when we find another alien civilization, then we have a whole 'nother set of things to deal with.
dhechols··on How did we come to believe saturated fat and cholesterol are bad for us?
Freerunner here. Most of my diet consists of peanut butter and blueberry jam on toasted bread, yogurt, chicken, eggs, rice, protein powder, cottage cheese, and hummus.

Oh yeah, and sometimes I buy a giant can of mixed fruit and eat the whole thing. It's like dessert.

dhechols··on Report: Blizzard Banning Diablo III Players For Using Linux
Yep. This has happened before. This is just more cheaters WINE-ing.

;)

dhechols··on Hacker irked by reincarnation
> To speak candidly, I always found it irritating when Atheists and Secular "thinkers" would attack me for being religious and a scientist at the same time, as if my religion must somehow stunf my intellectual capability.

I would think so. How can you say, "I'm a scientist, I'll construct experiments and observe results to understand reality," and then go believe that there's a dude in the universe that's omnipotent and omnipresent without a shred of observable evidence?

> Science is difficult, confusing and complicated.

Science is cherry pie compared to trying to appease some mystical, invisible, unobserable, unknowable, all-powerful, imaginary god.

dhechols··on Hacker irked by reincarnation
The "evidence" here is that children "said words" and "did things" that made it seem like they were "reincarnated". Also there are some anecdotal cases of injuries other people had turing into birth defects / birth marks for other people...

Can someone please tell me what the science is here? Because my brain is melting reading this "research".

dhechols··on Lawyer attacking The Oatmeal shocked by big mean Internet’s reaction
"Space douche-wagons" is now officially in my vocabulary. Thank you.
dhechols··on 25 bucks from Google for your search data
Don't worry though, the spreadsheets team has been notified.
dhechols··on Judge: Fifth Amendment doesn't protect encrypted hard drives
I foresee Truecrypt-ception. An encrypted OS within an encrypted OS within an encrypted OS. They'll never find my porn/plans to take over the world/illegal software/hacked secret government cables NOW!!!
dhechols··on Why I Won’t Turn Off My Gadgets on Planes
Indeed. The majority of people seem to think it's an insignificant article and that he's endangering their lives by not turning off his iPod.

These are people who are using the internet, and seem to have some technical ability to find their way onto a website and comment on the article.

I am without words.

dhechols··on Richard Stallman’s rider
Mr. Stallman is neither nice in manner or smell. His ideas, while visionary at times, are not pragmatic. He is his own worst enemy. Perhaps, however, it takes an unfriendly, smelly man to trumpet the ideas of freedom in the digital age. I'm ok with that.
dhechols··on Finally, USPS.com got nice look'n'feel
To me, it looks shiny, new, and somewhat useless. Screw those DHTML menus.

The best parts of this redesign are the search bar in the top right and the bottom link area. Everything else looks like Fisher Price Theme (tm). Still, it's miles better than the old one, which looked like the chaos of a mailroom itself.

dhechols··on [dead]
"Error establishing a database connection"

I knew it. My dreams of hacking with a beautiful girl have once again been dashed on the rocks of virtual reality.

//After reading actual article.

Why was I right? :(

dhechols··on Nintendo's WiiU: Touchscreen, coming 2012
This looks like the most uncomfortable thing in the world to hold. It looks expensive, gimmicky, and prone to breaking.

By the time they launch this, Microsoft will be announcing new firmware for Kinect with even more extreme fidelity than they have now, and Sony will start hyping their next console.

Add to that the lackluster sales of the (gimmicky, low battery life) 3DS, and I'd say Nintendo just jumped on the fail whale.

dhechols··on Patriot Act extended four more years, USA in fourteen year state of emergency
Fuck, fuck fuck, fuck.
dhechols··on Why Startups Could Use .NET, But Don’t
>Essentially, the cost differences have become moot.

What? Have you seen these prices? http://www.microsoft.com/sqlserver/2008/en/us/pricing.aspx

That's just SQL Server for god's sake.

dhechols··on Apple Q&A on gathering and use of location data (Apple Press Release)
Exactly, but I think it's rational. Software is hard, damn hard to get right -- even if you get the math side correct, there's always UX to damn your product. It's only reasonable that a company that gets so many things _right_ is both so loved by some, and expectant to fail by others.
dhechols··on Settlement in George Hotz Case
sigh "Hey George. We're your new corporate overlords, telling you to keep quiet about PS3_CONSTANT_ENCRYPTION_KEY." "Ok, can we talk?"

"We'll see you in court." "Shit."

Time passes...

"Hey Sony, here's a ton of money, leave me alone." "Ok."

I cannot express how disappointed I am in this result.

dhechols··on "Dead Drops" is an anonymous, offline, p2p file-sharing network in public space
A couple of concerns with usability, malware, and vandalism, but otherwise an AWESOME idea!

What about doing the same thing but attaching it outside your car instead? Then it's your property and it's mobile.

dhechols··on The $105 Fix That Could Protect You From Copyright-Troll Lawsuits
So...effectively does everyone need to pay $105 to start any sort of website?

Seems like a barrier to entry to me...

dhechols··on Is there such a thing as a sustainable todo system?
"The best todo system is the one you use".

For me, that's Things. It's important to have all three interfaces, iPad, iPhone, and Mac -- because it lets me use them in any context.

Since I always have one of these devices, it's superior to pen and paper. I'm more likely to use it, and it all syncs rather nicely.
