devonnull··on Lentils or Rice
How about a 50/50 mix?
devonnull··on Handheld RPI4 based computer with keyboard and display
Not sure why I want one of these, but I want one. Stat!
devonnull··on Ask HN: What career would you do if it was the 1960's, versus what you do now?
Probably either journalist or freelance writer. Maybe a tech writer at some big firm or another.
devonnull··on Substack Is Down
I'm sure Substack (and those other apps) will be back in action soon. The online world isn't ending.
devonnull··on [dead]
>There ain't no difference between a flying saucer and a time machine

Maybe Miller from the movie Repo Man was right after all ...

devonnull··on Ask HN: What do you call your computer friend?
Digital Brother? All-Seeing Eye? All-Hearing Ear? Stasi-Kumpel?
devonnull··on Ask HN: Do I Have ADHD?
The replies here are well meaning, I'm sure, but this isn't the place to ask this kind of question. If you're worried that you have ADHD, then book an appointment with a medical/psychological professional to get a proper diagnosis.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Dealing with the Guilt of Giving Notice?
Your former colleagues and former company will get along fine without you. Your former team will need to adapt to being a person down until they find a new andrewmclunn, but the work will get done and you're not leaving them in a lurch.
devonnull··on Elon Musk ‘buying Manchester United’ football club
I always thought Musk would be a fan of Arsenal or Liverpool. Or maybe Manchester City ...
devonnull··on Ask HN: Why don't web browsers discourage words that not everyone will know?
I can't see this idea flying. Why should anyone or anything prevent someone from writing in the way in which they want to write? And, as one poster pointed out, how would that work?
devonnull··on Ask HN: How to get rid of reflux acid
Consult a physician, rather than asking for advice here. I'm sure the replies are all well meaning, but what helped for someone else might not help you.

Best to seek professional medical advice that can be tailored (I hope) to your situation.

devonnull··on Caret – Markdown Editor for Mac / Windows / Linux
Same here. Never used the cross-platform editor named Caret, but when I've worked on Chromebooks I've used the one you linked to. And the Chromebook one is not a bad little editor at all.
devonnull··on AI-Powered Notes Tool
I prefer email logins, to be honest. A big part of that is that I don't (by choice) have social media, Google, Microsoft, Amazon, or GitHub accounts.
devonnull··on AI-Powered Notes Tool
Having to log in or sign up with a Google account? Thank you, but no.
devonnull··on Malcolm Gladwell doesn't care that he's a hypocrite about working from home
Malcolm who?
devonnull··on A little trick to spam the spammers (2021)
This reminds me of a trick a friend used to do: he'd collect the email addresses of spammers who'd targeted and put them into file on his website. Not sure whether that worked or not, but it's fun to imagine that it did.
devonnull··on Don't Use Manjarno
Could you at least spell the name of the distro correctly?
devonnull··on ‘Love me tender’: how Musk wooed Twitter, only to leave it at the altar
And now he wants an annulment ...
devonnull··on The digital typewriter and the unnecessarily costly pursuit of focus
This reads like a long rant about having a case of buyer's remorse. That said, I can understand his frustrations with a device like the Freewrite.
devonnull··on Don’t Read This Blog Post
Part of me wants to read it, just to annoy the blogger. But I refuse to give them the satisfaction :-)
devonnull··on [dead]
Can an admin delete this please? It looks like spam. It tastes like spam. So it probably is spam.

Thanks!

devonnull··on How do you use OpenBSD?
As a general desktop. No coding, no scientific tasks. Nothing fancy, just to handle all of my day-to-day personal tasks. I use it in parallel with a Linux laptop and, to be honest, I like and use both equally.
devonnull··on How to Buy a New Mattress Without a PhD in Chemistry
When did something as simple as buying a mattress become so complex? Oh, yeah. When the marketers go involved.
devonnull··on Ask HN: Using Personal GitHub for Work?
Best to have a separation of church and state (so to speak). Use your work devices for work, and your personal devices for personal things. It might sound a bit cumbersome, but it can prevent potential problems.

A few years ago, a colleague accidentally pushed a bunch of AWS keys (or something like that) to his person GitHub account when he should have pushed it to his company one. His personal account was public, someone found the keys, and started spinning up AWS instances by the dozen using those keys.

devonnull··on Mataroa Just Works for Me
Nice to see someone expressing their enjoyment of something, without spending hundreds (or more) words nattering on about how other options "suck" or are "useless" or any of that.
devonnull··on Ask HN: How do you plan and track your tasks?
I do it in two simple plain text files, which I have open in two tabs in a text editor. I also have a third tab open with my weekly agenda.

I try not to rely on reminders, instead making a habit of checking my lists 3-4 times each day.

It's a simple solution that works for me. It might not work for anyone else, but that's how things go isn't it?

devonnull··on Ask HN: Taxes
You should consider working with an accountant. That person's fees might be a bit higher than the $250 TurboTax wants to charge you, but a good accountant can help you find (legal) ways to save on your taxes.

My situation isn't as complex as yours (income from work, some investments, and a bit of money from a side gig) but what I pay my accountant each year actually saves me more.

devonnull··on Magic Keyboard with integrated Mac inside patented by Apple
While this is nothing new (computer-in-a-keyboard was a common form factor in the 1980s), this device looks like a thinner Raspberry Pi 400. Hardly innovative or an advance in computing.
devonnull··on Obscure HTML Tags
Obscure? I'm not sure about that. Some of the tags, like <meter> or <mark>, you can perhaps label as not frequently used.
devonnull··on Show HN: Edit.photo – a free photo editor – no ads, no cookies, no account
I like it. It's clean, simple, and has just enough features for most people. The pro (or wannabe pro) photo editing crowd won't like edit.photo because it doesn't do everything and more, but they're not the target audience are they?
