devb··on Illegally climbing the Golden Gate bridge at dawn (2011)
I can't seem to find a single thing online that supports your statement, either concerning the monument part or federal jurisdiction of the bridge.
devb··on Illegally climbing the Golden Gate bridge at dawn (2011)
How is it federal property? It's owned and operated by an independent quasi-governmental organization.

No, I know people who get arrested for stuff like this years after the fact.
devb··on Inside An Illegal Party In An Abandoned Subway Station Deep Under NYC
As soon as they publicized the event, they guaranteed that it would be locked down from this point forward. If you can't tell by the graffiti, many people have been there before them and kept it to themselves, but nobody else will in the future.

Chinatown. The stretch of tunnel goes from near Cyrystie Street, under the Manhattan Bridge approach plaza, towards Confucius Tower.
devb··on U.S. charges Edward Snowden with espionage
The prosecuters asked the jury to choose the death penalty but they declined to do so.
devb··on U.S. charges Edward Snowden with espionage
I agree that what Regan attempted to do was far worse than what Snowden did. It's not even in the same category. I was just pointing out that the feds did pursue the death penalty in this case despite not pursuing it in the Hanssen case.
devb··on U.S. charges Edward Snowden with espionage
The federal government pursued the death penalty against Brian Patrick Regan in 2003. The jury decided against the punishment, however, and is now serving a life sentence without parole.

> Someone needs to be charged with a crime before a pardon can occur.

Incorrect, see Gerald Ford's preemptive pardon of Richard Nixon in 1974.

devb··on This is a web page
Does anyone know why altavista.com and altavista.digital.com were different? I just remember preferring the digital.com version for some reason.

I wish I could go back in time to 1996... everything on the internet seemed so much more meaningful, not to mention textual (because images took so long to download).

devb··on Do You Have A Right to Remain Silent? Thoughts on Salinas v. Texas
Not the most sophisticated approach to constitutional law, but they are 77 and 64 respectively. Please consult your local actuarial table.
devb··on NSA leaker is a patriot, not a traitor
Drama sells. This is the unfortunate state of mainstream media.
devb··on Did Obama Just Destroy the U.S. Internet Industry?
How do you plan on telling everyone you communicate with, "I'm sorry, this channel is unencrypted, this conversation cannot continue."

Why aren't companies scrambling to provide a plug-in encryption product? Forget Google's default https, I want easy end user encryption.

devb··on Physicists To Test If Universe Is A Computer Simulation
It's apparently a good time to link to a writing entitled "Creating Infinite Suffering":

http://www.utilitarian-essays.com/lab-universes.html

"Abstract. I think there's a small but non-negligible probability that humans or their descendants will create infinitely many new universes in a laboratory. Under weak assumptions, this would entail the creation of infinitely many sentient organisms. Many of those organisms would be small and short-lived, and their lives in the wild would often involve far more pain than happiness. Given the seriousness of suffering, I conclude that creating infinitely many universes would be infinitely bad."

> It is little wonder that all primitive art depicted hunting.

"All"? I'm not even sure about "most". I would love to see a citation for this extraordinary claim.

devb··on What do grad students in math do all day?
It's the newcomers' faults, clearly.
devb··on The Biggest Thing Since the Light Bulb
There was an interesting article in the NY Times recently about the meaning of comfort and specifically compared the difference between cold overhead lighting in Japan and warm side lighting in Norway.

devb··on Getting better and finding happiness through cycling
After he became the father of Methuselah, Enoch walked faithfully with God 300 years and had other sons and daughters. Genesis 5:21-23

Sounds like a major Bible workout to me!

devb··on Getting better and finding happiness through cycling
Do keep in mind that you're replacing fat mass with muscle mass the more you continue to ride and tone your body. If it seems like you're slowing down in the weight loss, you might just be building muscle. 5'8" / 150 is pretty skinny, if I have anything to say about it.
devb··on The New York Times Paywall Is Working Better Than Anyone Had Guessed
There's also a simple way to modify the URL once the paywall kicks in after you've viewed the total number of free articles for the month. Despite the workarounds, I'm still one of the people that pays for the content.
devb··on Help HN: Developer laid off 5 days before Christmas, have kids
> Stop the crybaby nonsense. "have kids" ... who cares?

More people than those that care for you, apparently.

devb··on Apple kills a Kickstarter project
Only $20? Are there even any voltage modifiers in it, or is it just a pin to pin mapper?
devb··on Bankrupt Kodak sells off patents to investors for $525M
What do you think of their future chances of succeeding with printing will be? Is film profitable enough for them to stick with it?
devb··on Bot written to buy random things each month from Amazon
I thought the insinuation was fairly clear.
devb··on You Are Naturally Short Housing
My city's aging infrastructure is having trouble withstanding the population boom that's come with recent high density building. Sewers, traffic, and public transit are all suffering from unchecked construction. Sometimes NIMBYs have good reasons to fight development.
devb··on The Quiet Ones
There seem to be two very different definitions of brown noise.
devb··on Those Who Care Not For Trees

devb··on A New Species Discovered ... On Flickr
That sucks... I hope you're not too bitter about it. Would you mind sharing your flickr page here?
devb··on New York Underground
The water tunnels operate at great pressure. Intrusion is extremely unlikely.
