desigooner··on [dead]
I'd hardly call it being suave by trying to pull off the Elredge while being on a job interview. It'd be way too flashy and distracting. Might give you a good ice-breaker but lot of people might end up frowning upon being so zany at a job interview.

A navy suit with a white shirt and a navy tie is suave enough.

desigooner··on An iPhone lover’s confession: I switched to the Nexus 4
I routinely read through the comments before I actually click on the link to the article. It's a quick indicator to the quality of the article and often, I learn more from the comments vs. the article itself.
desigooner··on Scientific American’s gun error
The thing that is easily overlooked is the mandatory military service in Israel. You have trained citizens who know what a gun can do, what the consequences of such an action would be and how to handle a gun in presence of an armed opponent. I suppose it's a state of mind that can't be achieved by going to the gun range a few times a month.
desigooner··on Thinking of starting a Health IT company? Here are top three industry challenges
What I've observed is that it's hard to get the decision makers listen to you and often, they're unwilling to invest any more than they've already done towards any solution. Granted these conversations were mainly concerned with a SaaS based solution targeted towards HR & Administrative Operations vs. the field techs.
desigooner··on How 5 years of reading HN enabled me to build the website for my business
If costs are burning a hole in your pocket, I'd suggest you revisit your WP hosting solution. I think one of the shared hosting providers would suit your needs just fine if you enable caching on your site.
desigooner··on How to Drink Like a Pro and Maintain Your Professionalism
<< When drinking beer, keep it classy. You can flush your reputation and any respect you’ve earned down the toilet by ordering a PBR or Keystone Light. Amstel Light is usually a safe choice. >> One could flush their reputation by ordering a PBR but not by Amstel Light? You can't be serious with your advice with stuff like this.
desigooner··on ShowHN: I learned to code and got a job in less than a year. Here is my ebook.
Congrats on your journey from learning to code through to landing a job and congratulations on the book.

That being said, you might want to at least provide a sample of your writing from the book for people to look at.

desigooner··on HP takes a $8.8 billion writeoff, alleging Autonomy accounting fraud
Aurasma is some kind of an augmented reality browser / platform by Autonomy.
desigooner··on Google Nexus 4 Sells Out In Less Than An Hour (in Australia)
Latest from Google: 9 AM PST / 12 PM EST (my buddy just got off the phone with them)
desigooner··on Windows 8 (thumb down review)
Ever since I updated to Windows 8 on launch day, I've only been on the "Start Screen" once. I never used the start button in the first place and I don't really miss it in Win 8. The performance seems a bit better, boot times are much better and no more of the Aero gloss.

If you use Visual Studio that frequently, why not pin it to your taskbar?

Why not use something like Launchy if you terribly miss the start button?

desigooner··on Do You Wanna Touch
It also depends on execution. However bad surface RT is, I'm sure it won't be as frustrating to use as an Asus transformer (both the initial version as well as the prime). I've used both of those for a week only to return them without 2nd thoughts.
desigooner··on The Next 1,000 Start-Ups
Don't the rates match for Braintree & Stripe now?
desigooner··on Announcing the new Windows Phone 8 Developer Platform
Not sure that'd be accurate for me since I logged into the dev center using the live account I have (non-hotmail).
desigooner··on Announcing the new Windows Phone 8 Developer Platform
At $8, I thought it was worth a punt and decided to sign up. Alas, I cannot complete the process as it gives me an error each time I try to submit the payment information.

Only if MSFT got their sh!t together..

desigooner··on The lactose-tolerance mutation
Up until recently, most of Indian farming depended on (and still does to a good extent) on Bulls ploughing the fields for seeding. That and bullock carts as transport.
desigooner··on Windows 8 Arrives
It looks like it's an upgrade pack vs. a full copy of Win 8 Pro.
desigooner··on More trouble for Color: shareholders and board vote to wind down company
I wonder how many of those 440,000 "Active" users were a result of their partnership with Verizon to install Color on a bunch of their phones.

Also, does "active" mean # of installs in this case?

desigooner··on Schneier on Security: Fun with Secret Questions
Hardly. Rather, it would seem to be the other way around.
desigooner··on RIM Apparently Not Interested In Switching To Windows Phone
anecdotal-y: I've seen more Nokia smartphones in the northeast (Boston-NYC-Washington DC corridor which I travel through pretty often) post-windows switch than before. Maybe it's the marketing push from AT&T that has helped them sell more smartphone units now vs. in the past
desigooner··on Google Nexus 7 and Android 4.1 - Mini Review
Offline Google Maps in the next iteration of Android would mean that you could download the maps offline for the area you usually travel to/around and be able to use it as a GPS (not sure how the new offline maps would work w.r.t. re-routing and all that)
desigooner··on Facebook forces all users over to Facebook.com e-mail addresses
FWIW, I had my real email addresses showing before this weekend and when I checked this morning, the only email address that was being shown was the @facebook.com one. My other 2 email addresses (one visible to each of my friends and one only to a close few) were hidden from my timeline. Shady!!
desigooner··on Show HN: Twin Cities Transit "Where's My Bus?"
Nice effort.

I use nextbus.com here in Boston and used it back at school at Rutgers. While their mobile website is pretty nifty, the web UI needs quite some work.

desigooner··on Why Your McD's Burger Doesn't Look Like the One in the Ad
All the mens shirting still photos you see are shot in this manner. If you were to wear shirts that fitted so snugly, you might not even be able to move or breath.
desigooner··on Microsoft introduces Windows Phone 8
Wouldn't such criticisms be valid for Android as well?
desigooner··on Microsoft introduces Windows Phone 8
I get a chuckle out of reading people's views w.r.t. Microsoft. There are a good number who complain about lack of innovation & how Microsoft invests too much time in supporting legacy systems and that they should totally get rid of the CE core. Then there's the other end of the spectrum where Microsoft is stupid to stop supporting certain platforms because they're clearly not thinking about the users who use those systems.
desigooner··on "Android ICS already offers more than what is coming in iOS 6"
I have an iPhone 4S (Work) and an unlocked Samsung Galaxy S II (Personal - EU version with the physical button) and I am still to receive the ICS update here stateside!

By the time iOS6 is released to users, there will be many a people with Android phones who wouldn't have received ICS updates for their phone!

desigooner··on Ruby on Rails Tutorial screencasts, 2nd edition
These are great. Does anyone have any similar recommendations for Python / Django? I tried the MIT OCW videos for Python and they're pretty dry.
desigooner··on Show HN: I love weird socks and I'm finally launching my lifestyle business
I don't like socks? If it's sarcasm, I'm missing it. I've got socks that cost 3$ a pair through ones that cost 30-35$ a pair and quite a few of them all at that. While you might choose to blindly dive in, I like to ascertain the quality of the product that I'm getting.

And why spend 12$ a month on these when I can buy something from Happy Socks or Richer Poorer socks for 12$ a pair from a multitude of patterns and designs whenever I want to and be assured of good quality every time?!

desigooner··on Show HN: I love weird socks and I'm finally launching my lifestyle business
How easy is it to cancel? Whats the quality of the socks like? Where are they made? Where are large pictures that depict some sort of detail about the socks?

None of this was evident in the minute I spent looking around the site and I ended up closing it.
