desigooner··on Show HN: We're two coffee nerds who built an AI app to track beans and recipes
Just curios - Outside of "AI", what's the benefit of using your app over Beanconqueror (https://beanconqueror.com/), which is open source, has a lot of functionality built out already across multiple years and supports integrations with scales, refractometers, etc?
desigooner··on Mexico president slams social media censorship
Wait. Where were you when the baker refused to bake a wedding cake for a gay couple?! Smh..
desigooner··on How the Startup Slice Got Their First 1k Customers
This may be a bit off-topic but their pizza is actually pretty decent by Boston standards.
desigooner··on Florida scientist fired for refusing to manipulate Covid-19 data
Deaths are not reported based on residency - Deaths are reported based on the actual location of death. If the death occurs in Florida, it counts as a Florida Death as per CDC / NCHS.
desigooner··on Stripe Corporate Card
it's basically a charge card.
desigooner··on Banned from Google Ads for Using Apple Card
Citi
desigooner··on Espresso Machine Powered by Tcl/Tk
While tastes are subjective, and there are a lot of variables involved, the Decent espresso does pull a solid shot. The reviews so far are pretty positive.
desigooner··on Apple announces Apple Card credit card
On a similar note, getting 5% Cash Back each month on my modest AWS bills is certainly a nice perk with my Amex Amazon card, in addition to the 5% cashback on amazon & whole foods purchases.
desigooner··on First-class air travel is in decline
Depends which airlines you fly internationally - A lot, if not all, of american airlines are increasingly moving towards removing first class from their international flights & having business class as their premium cabin offering - e.g. Delta with DeltaOne or United with Polaris. If you want to truly experience first class, it'd have to be one of the middle eastern airlines or British Airways, Singapore Airlines and the likes.
desigooner··on Very Good Security
I'm sure the CEO @mahmoudimus can chime in - he's been posting in this thread noting that he works at VGS.
desigooner··on Show HN: Fullstack React Native – A Project-Based Guide to Learning React Native
I wish such sites would offer a direct link to download sample content without forcing users to enter an email address. You're never getting my actual email until I feel the book's good enough- why bother?!
desigooner··on How BuzzFeed’s Tasty Conquered Online Food
Another factor that wasn't mentioned: Plagiarism. They often use Serious Eats recipes without any sort of attribution.

desigooner··on Airlines Make More Money Selling Miles Than Seats
There's a reason they're called Sky Pesos :)
desigooner··on Call Centers May Know a Surprising Amount About You
I queried my 2 phone numbers as well as my wife's number - Looking at the reports for my 2 phone numbers and pretty much everything value returned is inaccurate - 99% of the information is for the folks who previously had the number assigned to them, before it was released to me - oddly enough, I'm listed as a "relative" for both numbers.

Any pointers on opting out of such services?

desigooner··on Microsoft Teams, the new chat-based workspace in Office 365
This might be elementary but does "Teams" show up in the App launcher? I enabled Teams from O365 settings this morning but I don't see anything pertaining to accessing the teams product.
desigooner··on Ask HN: What laptop should I get instead of a Macbook Pro?
I've been using a "refurb" Macbook Air 13 for the last 3.5 years. It was scuff-free when I bought it and it's been great so far. I've started running into some issues now such as battery health and the fan going on for extended periods of time since the last OS update.
desigooner··on 'Black Mirror' Is Back, Reflecting Our Technological Fears
To add on.. Chris Morris also created the satire show The Day Today with Armando Iannucci (Alan Partridge, The Thick of it, Veep)
desigooner··on Ask HN: Why are sites now breaking login forms into stages (name then password)?
IIRC, Paychex & Bonobos have a 2 page login
desigooner··on John Oliver buys $15M in debt and forgives all of it on 'Last Week Tonight'
IIRC, these accounts fall off the credit report in 7 years from the date that was deemed as last activity date on that account.
desigooner··on John Oliver buys $15M in debt and forgives all of it on 'Last Week Tonight'
If the debt collectors somehow manage to trick the debtors into acknowledging the debt, the debt clock is reset & it goes back on to your credit report.
desigooner··on The Madness of Airline Élite Status
I'm going to get a Citi Prestige as my next card, which to me works better than Amex Plat - 4th night free on paid hotel stays, Admirals Club access, Priority Pass Select for primary & authorized users (with access to 2 guests free vs. none on Amex Plat), Global Entry and 250$ in flight credit that can be redeemed for airfare vs. incidental charges with Amex. Not to mention, it's easy to get an in-branch offer of $350 a year plus the fact that there's no bonus for everyday spending on Amex Plats.
desigooner··on United Airlines awards hackers millions of miles for revealing risks
They can probably be used for giftcards etc via the MileagePlusX program / app.
desigooner··on Is It Better to Rent or Buy?
Doctor loans are similar - they don't need PMI but I'm not sure if the interest rates are higher than the regular mortgage loans
desigooner··on Tell HN: Things I Learned about Credit Bureaus This Week
Was it a CHASE card? I've seen reports of Compromised Chase credit cards on Flyertalk [1] and a couple of them mentioned use of a cloned card in Brazil.

Edit: [1] http://www.flyertalk.com/forum/chase-ultimate-rewards/168257...

desigooner··on Amtrak police use of passenger data
I don't recollect being asked for my ID while riding Amtrak on the Northeast Corridor in the last 2 years. I don't even print the stubs anymore - I just use the Amtrak app / Passbook on my phone to display my ticket.
desigooner··on Show HN: A mostly complete 2014 "Tools of the Trade"
I see Redmine on the list but no Bugzilla (and Testopia). Oversight or is Bugzilla not used as much anymore?
desigooner··on The Rise of the $8 Ice Cube
I put a single cube of ice in my scotch / bourbon simply because the dram "opens up" over time and the taste evolves with each sip, so to speak.

On the other hand, Chilled glasses are a pet peeve of mine.

desigooner··on Always Hungry? Here’s Why
Lyle McDonald's e-book on Ketogenic Diet is probably the best thing I've ever read. It's well referenced and pretty comprehensive.

desigooner··on Designer Duds
For what it's worth, the Flickr app now automatically backs up every picture; so do Picturelife & OneDrive. They all are backed by a storage array that is quite a bit economical when compared to Dropbox's current rates.
desigooner··on Soylent Update 3/13
I'd suggest people to go shopping at your local ethnic store for spices vs. buying pre-packed spice racks or those tiny spice bottles from whole foods or your local markets.

You'll get X times quantity for 1/Yth the cost. The same goes for Lentils, Beans and Rice
