designerbenny··on After 7 years in production, Scarf has reluctantly moved away from Haskell
You all are overthinking it. Haskellers aren’t hard to find. The roles fill fast. This is about embracing an AI-slop workflow so they can get that sweet increased valuation and investment. Nothing more.

Most of the issues presented are valid, but overstated. It’s just PR for the swap.

designerbenny··on Dr. Richard Stallman to give free talk and QA at Georgia Tech Jan. 23rd 2-5pm
Is that talk free as in beer or free as in speech?
designerbenny··on The profitable startup
If you slow grow and keep it smallish, then it’s a “lifestyle business”. That number can change but maybe $5million or less ARR. Thats enough to pay yourself and a few staff with benefits.

But like palata said above, it is a startup if hasn’t found product-market fit.

designerbenny··on Tell HN: iPadOS 26 bricked my iPad Pro
I don’t doubt it.

Regardless, the device overheating to this extent is a serious issue regardless of what causes it. It’s on Apple to make sure they design safe hardware and responsibly release working software.

designerbenny··on Tell HN: iPadOS 26 bricked my iPad Pro
Apple explicitly confirmed that the battery was fine.
designerbenny··on Tell HN: iPadOS 26 bricked my iPad Pro
It was the public release for me, though apparently that person in the other thread had experienced similar issues on the beta months ago.

I was never on the beta.

designerbenny··on iPhones 17 and the Sugar Water Trap
Why does every new phone have to be a completely revolutionary game-changer? Can’t you just live your life with the people you care about? Pretty sure all modern phones are fine there.
designerbenny··on Just Fucking Use React
This style of abrasive language works best when promoting the simple thing. Like Grug brain, etc. You use simple language to show how little thought is needed to get to the good stuff.

Each of the many paragraphs here requires thought to understand. That's React for you.

designerbenny··on The PhD Metagame: Don't try to reform science – not yet
It’s called being institutionalized.

You can let it happen or resist its influence over you from the start. Maybe through reform. Maybe by doing your own thing.

designerbenny··on Sigma BF Camera
Sounds like you want a Fuji.

Sony and “I don’t want to have edit RAW” don’t mix. Compactness and straight to Insta is more of a Fuji workflow.

designerbenny··on Bosch's brake-by-wire system may be the next big leap in automotive tech
> this type of complexity tends to have a more favorable profile for economies of scale

Yeah, but what about economy of safety?

designerbenny··on New Horizons for Julia
> I'm surprised this has no comments/interest

Julia is all well and good, but who is hiring for numerical computing roles? Lots of web and ML API plumbing. No real applied math anywhere to be found. I guess math doesn’t make money?

designerbenny··on Fractional Jobs – Job Board for Fractional Work
If I may paraphrase “300” with some stylistic embellishments:

- [Fractional], only 17 jobs listed. We thought your commitment would at least match our own. Indeed has 20k+ jobs.

- Indeed opportunity 1, what is your status?

- Unresponsive company.

- And opportunity 2?

- Fake role.

- And you, opportunity 3?

- Underpaying role

- Fractional roles, what is your status?

- Aoo, Aoo, Aoo.

- See, Indeed. We did bring more actual roles to the table.

(Allegedly, but 17 real roles is better than 20k fake or unresponsive ones).

designerbenny··on Idea stolen during an interview. What should I do?
Ah, the old “Count of Monte Cristo” strategy.
designerbenny··on Ditching EVs for Hybrids Is Already Paying Off for Automakers
The clear choice.

Please explain to me how being in the wilderness camping or fishing without a charge network close by is the clear choice?

Please explain how waiting an hour to charge your vehicle or doing “micro” 20 minute top ups followed by 35 minutes of driving followed by another 30 min top up is the clear choice versus a 5 minute fill up?

Please explain how to get charging when you don’t own your own house and street parking cannot accommodate charging your car overnight?

Please explain how EV is the clear choice when you do have your own house and still cannot get a charging solution installed?

Please explain how one can get a used gas car and repair it and do maintenance for years before hitting the cost of a new EV is the clear choice?

So are EVs the clear choice for affluent, urban people with discretionary income and time to waste when traveling? Are they for people who shouldn’t travel or dislike it? Where’s the clear choice here?

designerbenny··on Anaconda puts squeeze on data scientists deemed to be terms-of-service violators
This points to a widely unspoken reason why people use vim/emacs instead of VSCode, JetBrains, etc. No one can take my editor from me, upon which I stake my livelihood because of some corporate whims. Neither do I have to pay a yearly subscription or worry about an arbitrary terms of service change after I’ve incorporated the tool into my livelihood.

Yes, I am aware that VSCode is open source and that there is a fork that removes Microsoft’s telemetry every release. Even so, there is only so much trust that can be given to an organization in charge of my main tools. So too have Anaconda users been bitten.

designerbenny··on Ask HN: How did yall meet your SO?
Live in a college town and be intriguing. People are consistent. Those who want to be in a committed relationship do so early. Waiting just filters for those who don't prioritize it.
