What's wrong with using butterflies?
derpmeister··on Why the Fuck?
Sure, I get that. But diabetes and Alzheimer’s are actually related:

derpmeister··on Why the Fuck?
That's only a fraction of the costs involved. For one, today’s diabetes patients are tomorrows alzheimer patients.
derpmeister··on Why the Fuck?
Even if it doesn't, there's a lot more profit in advertising than insulin. The economy would probably function better if diabetes patients were left untreated and die, since the cost saving estimates are quite enormous.
derpmeister··on Why the Fuck?
Because nobody cares about your diabetes and obesity. Lay down that taco and get some fricken exercise, FFS.

I wasn't even suggesting guns should be banned everywhere (although they should), let alone cameras. Open access doesn't mitigate the problem, it'd merely replaces one problem with another. Similarly, publicising requests for footage could be detrimental to law enforcement agencies who are trying to help protect fellow citizens.

Since crime will always exist and criminals will always one-up law enforcement, it's in our best interests to always use the least possible countermeasures. Time will tell when we've reached 1984, society seems to drift closer and closer — albeit, ever so slowly.

derpmeister··on Intel says Clover Trail will not work with Linux
which is probably more competitive to the reduced feature set of smartphone-based devices such as android and iOS

Walled-garden says no. That and the fact that you can bootstrap and run Debian on Android on ARM, for starters.

That's like saying "Guns don't kill people, people kill people." even though death by speeding bullet is more prevalent where guns are legal. Guns and cameras should be used only where a credible strategical benefit exists. Right now, they're often part of a scare tactic and thus oppresses the people confronted by them. One has to ask whether their output is relevant at all before questioning the usage of said output.

derpmeister··on Oracle makes move to kill open source MySQL
This reeks of extortion. Let's sell the rejects to the customers without a support contract. That'll teach 'em.

Postgres is developing a lot quicker then Firebird. Also, management and replication solutions for Postgres are far more advanced. But what matters most (for me) is documentation. I can find everything I need to know right here:

But it requires Mac OS X, so I'd rather leave my rectum intact and use haxx.ly.
derpmeister··on The Making of Warcraft 1: Origin of the series & creation of multi-unit select
Actually it was Red Alert 1 with altered graphics and just a single new feature: technology overview screens. The graphics for the G.I.'s were exactly the same as in RA1.

I'm not listening.
derpmeister··on So you want to offer a public API …
First you use SOAP and it's nice, but after a while it's not good enough and you implement WSDL. Corporate overlords see it and suddenly everything has to be WS-YouNameIt (especially in banks and big telco). You end up in the deepest valleys of XML hell, colloquially known as WS-DeathStar.

I think I'd hate that, eye movement affects the pov so you wouldn't be able to use a context menu effectively for instance.
derpmeister··on Firefox 16 unprefix CSS Gradients, Animations, Transitions & Transforms
Thanks! They should disable the flyout completion for now, though. It causes the input box to lose focus, can't type a command with that.

How long should it take?
derpmeister··on Here’s to the PHP Misfits
You should consider switching to a better host. There is no excuse for this:

wget -4 output: http://scrp.at/bAD

wget -6 output: http://scrp.at/bAE

As an IPv6 advocate on the side, I'm disappointed by this.

There's a bug in this, on 2 adjacent sides you can walk one block further then you can create. The world isn't as big as it looks so this is easy to test.
derpmeister··on SecondLife Didn't Fail
The reason why SL doesn't grow is because of all those furries ruining the place for everyone else. I never knew what yiffing was until I went on SL. Had they placed a few curbs on it, their world would've been better for everyone.
derpmeister··on Sqlmap: Automatic SQL injection and database takeover tool
You could do without using a CTE, it's just not as convenient most of the time. Alternatively, you could pass the column names to a function (using a prepared statement, no less) and let that function figure out which columns are valid. If your tables change frequently, this would save more time in the long run.
derpmeister··on Sqlmap: Automatic SQL injection and database takeover tool
It would be a silly thing to do because you keep exactly the same problem you'd have without stored procedures. Would the client you're writing rather execute something along the lines of

  SELECT sp_enroll("bob\"); DROP TABLE students; --");
or

  SELECT sp_enroll("bob"); DROP TABLE students; --");
?

At least if you grant the user only SELECT and EXECUTE privileges and define the procedures using the SECURITY DEFINER property, you could still prevent this type of damage. (This relies on the procedures to be as strict as possible or the whole scheme essentially fails.)

derpmeister··on Sqlmap: Automatic SQL injection and database takeover tool
It doesn't hurt to prepare a statement, execute it once and then deallocate it. Intersect the user-selected columns with a whitelist of possible columns, use a simple flag for sorting and map it to ASC/DESC. Prepend the primary key, bind parameters, execute, harvest the results, deallocate temporary resources.

This is somewhat less efficient, but if the alternative is to be open to sqli attacks it'd be my pleasure.

derpmeister··on Sqlmap: Automatic SQL injection and database takeover tool
Yeah, that's kinda the whole point. You can put an incorrect value in there and it'll fail, but you can't change the query itself. (i.e. Bobby tables would be an incorrect value, not a dropped students table.)

You're comparing apples with oranges. MySQL Enterprise Monitor would've automatically noticed the missing index and asked you if it's ok to add.

Oh lookie, another Blizzard apologist. Wine triggers the VMM detection script in the warden, it IS a false positive.
