dendriti··on No Army? No Problem: Defending the Home Front in Ancient Greece
It is deeply amusing to see a NATO state and occupier of Afghanistan wax poetically about the rule of law and territorial integrity.

The Greek MFA makes some good points about the threat of Turkish incursions, but I wish they'd be less hypocritical about it.

dendriti··on Dear Spotify, can we just get a table of songs?
As someone with mobility impairment, putting a CD in a player and pressing buttons to play was never pleasant. In fact I was often stuck with whatever five CDs were left in the player. CDs actually haven't gone away, and you can still use them today. I am glad the world has moved on though.
dendriti··on Dear Spotify, can we just get a table of songs?
How does this work for you then:

Spotify allows the vast majority of music listeners far more access to far more music than ever in history.

dendriti··on I disabled WiFi on the new Samsung fridge
Single-use gadgets can be blessings for the disabled and differently abled. The author of this article is sneering at the disabled for having different tool needs than herself.

My 80-something grandmother uses a garlic press and several sizes of vegetable holders for slicing veggies. I guess she's just so uncool.

dendriti··on Mental illness, mass shootings, and the politics of American firearms (2015)
A US Senator from Texas literally said yesterday that we should station "good guys with guns" (armed security guards) to prevent school shootings.
dendriti··on Why isn’t new technology making us more productive?
Literally 100% of the documents I process are sent to other people. So collaboration and sending documents are core functionality.
dendriti··on Why aren't fentanyl test strips more widespread? (2021)
Why does it matter if decriminalization and regulation are floated as "magic bullets" or not? The Nirvana fallacy so often shows up in discussions of drug policy.

It literally does not matter if decriminalization is "only 5% effective" (in whatever metric you're using to measure success, which here is just marijuana sales?). Sane polities implement laws that don't have 100% effectiveness.

dendriti··on The Coming Food Catastrophe
Are you going to take your bucket out to the Great Plains and capture some of that water?
dendriti··on Kindle, ePub, and Amazon’s love of reinventing wheels
Some Amazon Kindle books DO have "real" page numbers. It's an additional feature that must be supported. The problem of page numbers on reflowable text is much more difficult than it may appear.
dendriti··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way
"Free speech doesn't exist in this country:

[several hot takes follow]

FREE SPEECH IS OVER!"

Do you not understand how silly you look?

American culture warriors desperately want to be oppressed.

dendriti··on The ACLU Has Lost Its Way
Individual rights are, by their very nature, political rights. There's no hard separation between the two concepts.
dendriti··on Deletionpedia: Rescuing articles from Wikipedia's deletionism
Do you really think that the subject of a Wikipedia article should decide whether they are notable or not? Seems a bit hypocritical given your deletionist stance.
dendriti··on Deletionpedia: Rescuing articles from Wikipedia's deletionism
A compendium of knowledge can't be a compendium of knowledge if it has too much knowledge in it?
dendriti··on The Problem with Mechanical Switch Reviews (2016)
There are tools such as VIA which handle firmware for you, so you can just change a key in the GUI.
dendriti··on The frenzied world of rare watches
I feel sorry for you.
dendriti··on Overhauling Mario 64's code to reach 30 FPS and render 6x faster on N64 [video]
You get infuriated that talented modders and hackers perform research and entertain you for free?
dendriti··on Microsoft explains why you can't move Windows 11 Taskbar
>When you think about having the taskbar on the right or the left, all of a sudden the reflow and the work that all of the apps have to do to be able to understand the environment is just huge.

I have literally been running Windows 11 with the taskbars on the side for 6 months

dendriti··on Etsy Strike
The people who are buying Chinese knockoff pirated flash carts, are not the same people pulling out their credit cards for paid support. Also, retro gamers are a notoriously difficult and time-consuming market to support.
dendriti··on Back to India
You are really complaining about people "making presumptions" downthread, and then claiming to speak for literally all Americans in this one?
dendriti··on Police seized $10k from him. a court ruled he had no right to an attorney
If you eliminated qualified immunity, only fools would become government officials.
dendriti··on Food Delivery Leak Unmasks Russian Security Agents
Taxes and import duties on electronics wiped out this difference for me. Seriously the highest prices I've ever paid for electronics.
dendriti··on I hate what video games have become
Those are pretty bad examples. Mario Kart and Smash are literally some of the top selling games of all time. If their "wacky ways" are played and enjoyed by 10% of players, that's still millions of sales.
dendriti··on Humanly traversable wormholes (2020)
You're assuming an objective reality. Events may not truly occur without an observer.
dendriti··on Ask HN: How does one affordably eat without cooking or cleaning?
It is definitely cheaper to eat at a hawker center than to cook for a single person, but one must be choosy. At least in Malaysia, many similar venues don't even offer ANY healthy options.
dendriti··on UCLA hiring Asst. Adjunct Professor “on a without salary basis” (PhD required)
People opposed to affirmative action like to use verbal tricks. For example, here OP has described affirmative action as "racial discrimination", which is perhaps technically true, but not as most people understand the term.
dendriti··on Each Firefox download has a unique identifier
Just because you don't spy on your neighboors means that Mozilla can and should spy on their users? What?
dendriti··on What were humans doing in the Yukon 24,000 years ago?
This question assumes a lot... and that isn't what happened.
dendriti··on Can Minecraft be played without giving MS a Phone#?
If I trust Microsoft enough with my privacy to control my operating system, then I trust Microsoft enough to have my phone number. So this issue has not arisen for me.
dendriti··on Amazon Delivery Companies Are Being Crushed by Debt
Surely the cited 0.10 USD per package delivered, plus fuel expenses, must be a typo?
dendriti··on Hungary will not allow lethal weapons for Ukraine to transit its territory
Orbán literally is a staunch revanchist. Not sure how you can say Hungary is not revanchist when its powerful and noisy dictator constantly talks about Greater Hungary. Also not sure why Slovakia banning an anthem makes Hungarian revanchism any better.
